My wearable computer is my most critical filmmaking tool - the Optigon is the custom teleprompter that lets me deliver these ridiculously complex scripts. But it's one of my oldest projects - the Moverio BT-200 augmented reality headset is over seven years old. If I can't build the generation, everything, pardon my language, goes to heck.
I bought a pile of top-of-the-line parts, including the Moverio BT-40 and Khadas Edge-V, and if they work together, they'll create a wearable like no other. Double the resolution, six times the power, a slimmer profile, and total control - the only thing that could go wrong is everything.
Is the title and thumbnail clickbait? There truly would be major consequences if I lost my wearable, even if it's not really certain DOOM. Even a regular teleprompter would affect the flow of our scripts, and you deserve the best content-style video experience. Whether these parts will make it into the next version remain to be seen.
One hack stands between inevitable doom and unlimited opportunity - now to figure out which one it is!

So apparently, Epson offers a dev kit that's literally the guts of the BT-40. First-party documentation was available the whole time.🤦♂
Epson, my offer of a sponsored video still stands...
thanks for puttin some rhymes in
Mums wondering when you're gonna call her for another night out
I actually got Epson to send me the Android Kernel source for my BT-200, which I got after being inspired from watching your other video.
I am currently trying to reverse engineer the LCD module, so I can get a MIPI DPI bridge chip in order to make literally the exact interface Epson decided to put into the BT-40 lol.
I've found DisplayPort USB-C is extremely closed source and it really, really sucks. I'm hoping I can get it working but I don't have a lot of hope for it...
the extents you are going just to look cyberpunk are fantastic. "Eyebrow purposes" xD
How's the mirage keyboard coming?
Holy crap that ad plug segue was smoother than a frictionless physics homework problem
It's "segue" not failed transport meme Segway ! LOL
@@edwardfletcher7790 he said what he said
@@edwardfletcher7790 failed? LOL. They're still being made. The guy in NH sold it for over $100M to the Chinese, and they still make the original style Segways, commercial units, and all the other Ninebot stuff. Segway paved the way for things like the Onewheel.
@@littlejackalo5326 ummm it was meant to be a "revolutionary transport solution" .

Damn near spit my coffee at my phone. Fckn savage😂
I rarely laugh out loud on UA-cam. This channel is an exception 🤣
I felt that
I just hope it's a joke and not real
@@Dragon_G4m3r some people are happily non monogamous.
The 2 minutes of silence with a black screen at the end might be thought to be a mistake but in reality its a quick 2 minute epitaph for the optigon, you just need to use the optigon to see it
I stayed for all of it, not fast-forwarding, expecting something to happen for a single frame or two. But nothing happened. And then I realized that "Nothing happening" was the thing happening.
Pure art.
And then something DID happen!
Pshh it's just to get past 10 minutes...
@@JaredConnell 18-2 = 16 >:^)
@@JaredConnell As Farewell_ mentioned it'd be over 10 minutes either way, and the 10 minute thing is only because a video needs to be 10 minutes or more before the creator can enable mid roll ads. This video doesn't have mid roll ads.
@@erlandjohansen7195 since 2020 you only actually need 8 minutes to enable mid rolls, thats why a lot of youtubers who are running a bit of a cash grab switched to an 8 minute system
I SOOOOOO almost impulse purchased a BT40 as soon as they were announced. But with the problems I had getting my BT30c to work with eDP supporting devices (along with my extremely poor hardware h4xxx0rz skillz) I decided I'd let you do the hard work first. Turns out that was a good decision.
decided to watch zacks video before yours today lol. Glad to see you here Jeff.
@@RenewedLifeMedia It was the other way around for me. But I'm also glad to see you here Jeff.
Its so good when seems that 2 of yours favorite UA-camrs know each other

man i keep running into your comments lol
This channel is so underrated

Agreed
That comment says it all
Awe I missed these videos. I can’t imagine how much work and time it takes to make these, but bravo sir! As a fellow engineer, I am severely humbled every time I get to watch one of your videos. At the same time, I always find myself laughing from the comedic additions - it’s therapeutic. I absolutely love your scripted videos. It’s like a wonderfully nerdy poem married to a fast-paced hackathon unfolding right in front of your eyes. Pure genius :)
to the point.
the comedy is therapeutic, especially when you are stuck on a project and are almost ready to give up on it
Agreed. Now back to the thinking lightning rocks
Zack, I thank the UA-cam gods for putting your videos on my feed. I understand about 50% of what you're saying, and actually understand about 50% of that, but I honestly have no idea how you crank out a solid 16 minutes of amazing one liners, jokes and entertainment every. fucking. video. It's incredible. Keep it coming (but don't get burnt out!).
Correction: 18 minutes, 40 seconds. I saw the last few seconds of the video just as I submitted this comment. Amazing
Same but I thank Yeshua
I had a surprisingly long chuckle at the drumroll gag. Thank you.
To be honest, I like the processes more than the projects. Hear me out Zack
The projects are great and really detailed, but I like watching the videos and seeing the work being done the most. If that means making videos before a project is finished, than that is fine. You projects are so complex that it is probably a good idea to break your videos into multiple parts of it means steadier streams of content.
This is the devil you chose, video maker, not project maker; and he is hungry.
I agree. I especially like understanding how you make decisions, like figuring you'll find a workaround in just a few hours so it's worth tinkering.
I agree. As a maker care more about the process than the project. I'm never going to make the exact thing but I will try to copy a process in my project.
Sadly, the UA-cam algorithm favors the "I made a thing!" video over the "This is how I made a thing". The first type gets more views and that means more chances to sell video ads (which is the business model for UA-cam).
@@andy-in-indy You have it backwards, the algorithm gives absolutely no care to the content in a video. It’s purely driven by tags, view count, like to dislike ratio, how many likes themselves, watch time, viewer retention and which creator it’s coming from. It has no idea if a project is complete or not. People themselves click on a finished project which fuels the algorithm to bury in process projects.
Hey man, I just wanted to say frick the haters that think less of you for not complining things from source or writing your own stuff, that's BS; I think less of you for *entirely* different reasons
Stay strong and dab on those haters 💪
I'm the kind of nut job that would do something like and yeah, frick them
Imo doing that kind of thing is really only worth it if you do it as a learning experience, not to actually get it going
screw compiling from source 99% of the time, way too much effort
YES I dont mind seeing unfinished projects as long as its as interesting as making the optigon👌
I love you're videos I do love this kind of update format for a build you just started it feels more like we're part of the journey, this is where everything goes completely batshit
Easy workaround, just remove the right lense, leave the whole board and screen in tact :D
Yeah just cut the glass in half, fold over the ribbon cable back on itself, and reattach the minimal required electronics to the main side
Very true, you don't even have to touch the electronics.
@@GabeRealStudio It can stay on its original side for balance purposes.
Given that it turns off and on from both sides when the right is unplugged, im betting the issue is more of a power supply wired in series.
Of course I'm guessing but I can see where some money could be saved in the power regulation circuit by allowing a bit more power and using it across two devices. But because it is so close to the eyes, the series circuit could pop a thermal fuse or something if damage from a drop or something could otherwise cause a catastrophic failure.
If my guess is right, tracing the power from the regulation circuit to the end points would identify the connectors and a small resistor across them should be enough.
@@sumduma55 This can be easily checked by unplugging the right display, but keeping the display board connected.
I will say this, give me PCBs, waving hands, and amazing dialogue, and I will watch every time. Even if the project takes a year+.
Thanks again for taking my mom on that cruise. She had been feeling really down since my dad died and even if it was completely platonic, your compliments have her confidence and really helped her take steps toward moving on when she's ready.
Wow, He didn't finish a project.
The illusion is gone! It IS human!
Though now I feel a bit worse about my shelf of unfinished projects knowing that a mere mortal can finish one.
Good luck with the new pile of fpga's
You should try contacting Epson to let them know what you're up to, show them your current headset, and see if they want to help out some.
Hope it works out though. Alternatively, look into the NReal Light AR headset?
Japanese Companies, for all the high tech goodies their Engineers design, still exist in the 18th century of 50 levels of management. It'd take 7 years to get a response, and the answer would be No...
I actually got Android Kernel source for the BT-200 within a couple of weeks... It's worth a shot!
@@DingleFlop That's really handy. But, getting proprietary HW info is very different. There's NDA's and all sorts of problems. Android is technically open source...
@@edwardfletcher7790 The devices use separate kernels with important binary blobs.
Never going to build anything like this but the description of the pathological inner workings of a maker-nerd-hoarder-parts-hunter made laugh out loud. Really awesome channel. You are risking your sanity so we don't have to!
Zack is the only UA-camr who challenges my habit of consuming content at 2x speed :) Yes, I still insist on viewing at 2x speed.
My slow ass brain can't understand at normal speed
Running this using the same batteries as your camera would be such a cyber cowboy move.
Having more small updates on projects would be so cool! Kinda like a game dev vlog, but more hardwarey
Dude, I know you're never gonna see this, but I just wanted to let you know, your scripts are so freaking tight. You're writing to really amazing. My face hurts at the end of your videos from smiling so much. Keep up the awesome work!
I loved every bit of this video. Hah your energy is contagious. The drum roll made me cry
I think it's interesting to see a project in progress, especially since it highlights how things sometimes don't work out.
The quality and effort of your project videos (in-progress or otherwise) will always keep me coming back
Thanks for another great vid, Zack; can't wait to see how the octagon wraps up! you've really inspired me to just start cautiously building stuff despite having zero formal education. you just make it look so fun and rewarding!
i love the amount of detail you've gone into describing the logic of the boards, and how dedicated you're being to minimizing & optimizing this device. in terms of workarounds, though - why not just take out the right lens, cover up the right display input, and let the right side display into the void?
I'm so excited for this! Optigons are the bestigons.
Dude i already love your channel and your insane brain!! but kudos for including that reference of Seven.. Absolute Legend!
Man, your scripts get funnier every time, and the complexity of projects goes up. Definitely the way to go, cheers!
That clean ass transition . Zack i love your videos I hope u best good luck .
Loved the video! Your presentation is just fantastic.
I would really like multi-video projects where you can really take us through the journey, so this video was perfect
awesome video! excited to see a display/computer combo from a more current era; looking forward to the possibility of my own optigon!
Good stuff! I really like this type of content and your smartass remarks/ humour! Keep up the good work and grats on 260k.
Best of luck, Zack! I'll be excited to see progress whenever it comes!
I love your content Zack, and I appreciate a video that does not include a finished project. It's exciting to be included in a project still underway and I'm interested to know how you will overcome the problems in the current plan.
I hope, for your sake, that you can make a proper chump out of the onboard CPU.
Yes! Really enjoying this type of content. This is just the hardware equivalent of infernoplus' suffering, which I would happily tune in to multiple parts of one project.
Keep goooooiiiiiinnnnngggg!!!! The world needs more leet haxxors and this channel and its projects are pure compiled gold
Loved the vid - did not care project was not done. You keep being the madman I originally subscribed to - loving it :-D
More wearable tech, yay! I sort of discovered your channel a week ago after being recommended the Singularitron video and then may or may not have binged all of it.
I miss out on a few of your videos here and there, but then I catch one and your writing style has me right back in the mix. Kudos. (Also you deserve at least 5x the sub count.)
I’m so glad the algorithm has put you back in my life. Your videos put me in my best phase of the pandemic , one where I actually worked on projects via inspiration from your vids
“ But I was drinking at the time…” lol! And great content was born. That’s it, I subbed.
Love the whole process! It doesn't need to be complete to be good. Love it.
I only understand every other word you're saying, but DAMN... I can't stop watching!!! The dry wit is awesome!!
Zack I don’t always understand the projects in your video but I appreciate the way you present things! Entertaining and humorous and it keeps me coming back!
Yesterday I saw your other video about the glass, and it made me really want to make one myself. Came across the BT-40 and doing research on the possibility of making it the way you did. Now I'm watching this video going through many of the questions I had! I hope I will actually also work on this project too haha! Thx for all the great videos!
I have been wondering what the hell that thing on your glasses is for ages! So nice to finally know.
that was, without exception, the smoothest ad transition I've ever experienced. SO good.
Awesome project! I've been poking around with an esp32 cam trying to make a minimal data glass, but I always end up messing around within an hour or two of starting XD
Okay… that Skillshare slipstreamed in was arguably the slickest! Thanks for the content! Enjoyed! Thx for sharing with us!
Love the video.
So much of the process is discovering the unknown problems and searching for solutions, so it's really great to see that in action rather than just getting told about problems after the solution is known.
... but maybe some hint that the project isn't finished early in the video? Like "Starting a new..." or saying "the first steps..." - otherwise it feels like a shock to reach the end without a conclusion :)
I like the update and early info and a glimpse into what might need done
Incredible tech content, funny, well paced, well edited... man, this channel is a gem
The last minute and a half of this video is some of the best work Zack has done! Batsh!t
[Long, descending whistle] whoah. Respeck knuckles for the indepth look at the effort behind the third eye. I love witnessing creativity in action. Just brilliant.
Rad dude! Good luck, I look forward to updates on this journey.
I love the information on how you go threw your process of hacking. It's very informative.
Great video, the process is usually more interesting than the final product.
That was the cleanest transition to an advertisement I’ve ever witnessed, I didn’t even realized it happened till halfway through
This is the main thing I come to voidstar lab for. This video is perfect and i would watch any updates that come out in coming weeks
That damn ad transition… It’s one of the best I’ve seen in awhile!
Please do more videos like this where you highlight more of the rationale and reasoning behind your decisions on a project. Super interesting!
Man... u are one of the best tech channels that make me actually crack up
This is extremely cool and will be helpful in my quest for the most portable work station setup. Thank you
i love your channel!
don't worry about the project not being done. in enjoy the process.
aside from my personal preferences, channels like colinfurze or cody'sLab have multipart episodes on projects which do very well on youtube.
Love this Channel Zack! Did you do a 2nd video on this? Love it!!
i will patreon you until time ends zacky dont you worry even if your channel is doomed

Love watching the process man even if you don't complete it !
I liked the video, and would watch more like it. I feel so bad for what you're going through with this project though lol, that sounds like a fucking nightmare
I def like seeing early footage since most of this is what you do on stream that I don’t follow I know blasphemous ! Lol great work and I love for your wondrous play of the English language lol
I understood a little more than the amount Epson was going to help you with this project, but I was thoroughly entertained.

The word play in the writing is that extra bit that makes this channel next level.
Okay, the "Drumroll please" part got me. Subscribed.
Great video! Looking forward to the finished project. Thanks for sharing!
I am sure wearables are the future, ar and vr are getting better and better. I can not wait until my glasses double as my phone and I can’t even see the road because of all the pop up ads in my vision!
I was so happy to see BIONICLE at 10:25 haha. Amazing video as always
Been a cyborg awhile and a recent next gen practicool inventor... so glad of this channel!
As I just told my brother, you're the gold standard on entertaining, educational, nerd content. But really I mean all content, you're savant!
great video super interesting to learn about these devices in depth. I think this incremental update style for some projects could work out. Some projects should probably stay to a video to align with your get it done mentality. This could allow you to build more complex projects while not compromising to quick one video timeline.
Damn that ad segway so smooooth. I've never encountered an ad that felt like it had a late title card before.
This is amazing 💚
We very are jealous of your amazing wearable displays.
legit combo of best patron names and best name reading... almost seemed like the guy was using a teleprompter or something
Very cool! Thanks for showing us the process!

That was one of the slickest ad segways I've seen yet
Its bin 3 weeks.... Oh god please tell me we aren't actually DOOOOOOOMED! Hope Zack comes back after the holidays.
Heh, new video drops tomorrow. I kind of ran out of steam and slowed down, now it's time for a break
that was SUCH a smooth ad transition
