This is what my neighbour was telling me to do. I didnt understand her and cut up the entire stem making many 2-3" pieces. Most with 1 node. I didnt score a thing and i stuck 15 in a small pot till i saw new leaves. I was like WOW this thing is hard to die! I now have many beds with big calaloo!!
What a great video. Thank you for the lesson on Callaloo propagation. It looked as if you spaced your cuttings approximately 12 inches apart. Can you confirm what distance Callaloo plants grow healthiest at? I actually grew some from seed and am unsure how far to thin them apart. But I had a friend come and she wanted some seeds or some cuttings when I do thin them out so I went on youtube to find the spacing information. We cooked our first harvest of Callaloo the other night and have been enjoying the mild and tender Callaloo sabzi nightly! My husband is from India and had brought some Indian Red Amaranth and we have also been harvesting those and enjoying them as well. Yes, if you could respond and let me know what the optimal plant spacing would be that would be great! Thank you again for the great video demonstration!
Thanks for sharing. I am in Canada and the growing season is short so I did this yesterday after watching your video. I will update you on the progress. Thanks again.
@@homeandgardenfixandtricks6938 Thanks again. I used your method and they grew so fast and I was able to cut them 3 times before the others that I planted from seed came to maturity. All the best on your channel.
Thanks for the info...I always have callaloo at home because I always leave a few trees to seed but I never knew I could grow them like this. I have to try this
Great Video! Had Callaloo for the first time earlier this year and now growing it. Will definitely do this once plants are large enough. Thanks for the great content!
Subscribed! Boss man, thanks for opening my eyes to this grow method. I had no idea. What do you put on your plants to prevent the insects from eating them? Big up! I'm missing home (Jamaica) right now.
Nuff love and thanks for subscribing. I just do regular observation and remove any early signs. However I have videos on here that shows natural ways to get rid of pests and diseases.
I didn't know you could grow callaloo from cuttings. I was looking for seeds everywhere and couldn't find them. The closest I got was amaranth. Thanks!
So glad I found your channel. I bought 3 bunch on Tuesday 5/11/2021 and they are refrigerated. One bunch cost us $3.99 USD so we are going to take a bunch and use your grow method. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this really useful information. Will try using cuttings next year from some plants started inside next spring to get a head start. The self seeded plants don't emerge until late June and early July. All my plants are going to seed now with the cold weather coming here in October in Toronto
Thanks so much for sharing. I just planted some Callaloo suckers last nite. I have little yard critters like wood chuckers that always root up my plants. How do I deter them from rooting or disturbing my new suckers?
Hey Sophia thanks for subscribing and thanks for your question. I would suggest fencing the garden area but if that too expensive try growing your plants in pots where you can have more control
Amazing video and very insightful, my partners stepmom grows this and I’ve just ordered the seeds as I really want to try it myself, I live in London and have a roof garden but no plant bed. Would it be possible to grow these in a trough or pot? Which one would be better?
Both could work well just make sure you have enough space about 12 inches deep and 12 inches wide to accommodate the root system and use good rich soil you should be fine.
Thanks for you video! I live in Mississippi zone 7b, and started my callaloo seeds late and now they are 2-4 inches tall. Can I put the seedlings in the garden in October?
My callaloo plants are in a large planter. I have them from cuttings that I put in soil on July 11th. They are growing tall but, they have a slim purple stem. Will they grow to have a thick green stem like yours? How long should I wait to cut them? Thanks!!
It depends on the variety you have some variety don't grow that big so cut them when you are ready there is no set time to harvest just cut whenever you are ready
Thanks for the helpful video. Subscribed. I was growing kale in a container and some callaloo plants started popping up. One is about a foot tall and the others are a few inches high. Is it safe to transplant the callaloo to a different container at this stage so that they can grow separately or best to leave them alone? The container isn't that big so I'm concerned about the overcrowding. Thanks is advance.
This is fabulous... so good to know this is possible. I'm growing (well I hope I'm growing... as it looks more like cress) callaloo for the first time from seeds. At the moment they are on my kitchen window so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens 🌱
Am in Jamaica. Just plant them outside when you have good weather now would be great to start. Use a 12 inches pot in the winter with good garden soil for inside growing give as much light as possible
Thanks. You have taught me something new. I didn't know calaloo can be grown from cutting. I have a lovely bed that gives me calaloo almost every weekend. I have a question. What's the coldest temperature for growing them? I know do very well in the spring, summer. What about fall weather October and November?
It won't do well in winter so I recommend growing them in containers and carrying them indoor during the winter months. But they can be grown in the fall based on what my friends told me in England. So try and let me know.
Hey my Callaloo is a light green color some even yellow The stem is a dark green doesn’t look tender I been growing since the end of may someone gave me a plant A lot of leaves medium size not huge You think I should cut it
Yes you can because the longer you have them the older they are getting. After cutting treat them with some nitrogen rich fertilizer that should help them. Don't cut too many leaves off though
Thanks so much for this great video. This is one video info I have been itching to see. I have been searching U tubes for infos on this vegetable. I subscribed as the video ended and liked it too. I also watched the next one that popped up. I never knew it can be planted tru the stem. Now i have a question, how do you havest and preserve the seeds. Thank you and God bless.
When the plant seed wait until it dry then cut the stem with the seeds and store it in a dry plastic bag. Can last up to a year like that God bless. Thanks for your support
So happy I found your channel. Will it grow out doors even in winter ( sometimes below freezing temperatures and some time snow. ) is there a need to bring indoors?
No it's not clay but yes plants can grow in clay it's the most fertile soil just needs to be managed and amended. If you have clay you can mixed it with sand that will improve the drainage
Thank you for this knowledge. Just bought some callaloo at a farm here in Florida. Have my cuttings ready to plant per your instructions.

This is very helpful. Thanks! What size pot would you recommend if you don’t have garden space?
Start with a ten inches pot or bigger the bigger the better. And thanks for your kind words appreciate it.

How do I get my calaloo to have less seedlings and to be green and nice can I over water my calaloo I need guidance in growing calaoo
Hey no don't over water them too much water can ruin them. When they showing signs of seeding just remove the seeds so they don't fall and germinate.

Cultivated variety

So happy I found your channel. Will it grow out doors even in winter ( sometimes below freezing temperatures and some time snow. ) is there a need to bring indoors?
No it won't u have to take it indoor that's why you want to use pots closer to winter months so they can be easily taken inside.
That looks like a baking tray
Use anything you can find that's the idea
Your dirt looks like clay. Where are you located. Didn't know callaloo can grow in clay. Did you amend dirt at all
No it's not clay but yes plants can grow in clay it's the most fertile soil just needs to be managed and amended. If you have clay you can mixed it with sand that will improve the drainage
