    I Very rarely leave a comment. In 15 years I think I have left 2. One was to you recently. I am not on any other form of social media for a many reasons ... but this video just rests my case. People have become unbelievably arrogant, opinionated, aggressively rude and basically whacked. Anyone would have to have to be inhuman not to take these critics personally. I often wonder how people can make these videos in today's climate of angry ignorance. You deserve a medal. I love your channel. I just subscribed.

      You’re not wrong there. Many feel that the anonymity of hiding behind a keyboard allows them to spit out their horrible opinions that can be very damaging to the person that they aim them at. I often wonder if it is down to a loss of discipline we now see. I doubt that they would be able to do the same in person. It is very sad that some people have become so self centred.

      thanks. I know I should ignore people more - but I regularly get, as you see, insulted for being me, or insulted for a lack of perceived skill I have spent decades working on and teaching. It isn't easy. thanks for watching.

    Your instructional videos helped me so much last year starting as a total newbie on borrowed gear going right into a long paddle in the ADK. Still lots of challenges w a wider recreational kayak and very likely a paddle that was too short for me. But I still did it and didn’t hurt myself over about 12 miles over 2 days. Your videos help me know how I should strive to evolve. And I keep hoping that I will get better and get better gear and will be able to do kayak camping more regularly. I even got your book. Thx for the honest advice.

    An unfortunate reality of success on UA-cam is that people like to bitch and get nasty and hurtful because maybe it makes them feel better about their feelings or other personal failings of theirs. Certainly I don’t agree with everything you’ve said on this channel but you’re doing awesome and as I’ve said before one of the few channels I specifically look for videos from each week. Also looking for new ways to do things is a big part of growing as a person, something everyone should be striving to do, becoming the best versions of ourselves, so it’s fantastic that you’re open to new ways of doing things, basic paddle skills and beyond.

    A couple of days ago I paddled into some of the highest winds I have ever had to navigate. Because of your teaching, specifically pushing the paddle as opposed to pulling it and of course torso rotation, I made it through the paddle with no pains in either my shoulders, arms or torso. Thanks for great paddling tips and like others have commented, disregard the negative commentators. They are useless for the most part.

    • @anninwhack1998
      @anninwhack1998 2 місяці тому +2

      Yes. Pushing the paddle helped me 1000% last summer as a newbie in high winds/current on Indian Lake ADK. Still had to over-stroke on recreational kayaks but at least I was pushing my over-strokes and not pulling them.

    Hey dude. Fellow instructor here (Whitewater Kayaking). I really like your perspective.
    Nice to see that whitewater is not the only discipline with dogma. I like your salad bar analogy. I use tools in a toolbox analogy with my students.
    Another thing I am trying to do is instead of using words like "right," "wrong," "good," or "bad," I use words like "effective" and "efficient." So a stroke could be more effective or less efficient. This is more specific feedback as it more accurately tells them what exactly to work on and it respects where they are on the continuum of skill level.

    Yes, we all get older. You do what you can to stay in shape (and that becomes harder and less rewarding), but in the end the only solution is to accept new limitations and be thankful for what you still can do. I’d like to think we become a bit wiser and learn to enjoy smaller challenges and limited success that would have disappointed us when we were younger. I also think we learn not to do the stupid things we did when we were younger and believed nothing would go wrong. My ten mile hikes have been replaced by five mile hikes, but I’m satisfied that I can still get out and hike. I’m 75.

    A great reminder that noBODY is the same and there's no such thing as the right way.
    Some instructors i admire use the following questions to help assess alternative methods.
    Does it work? Does it introduce risk? Is it fast?
    If it satisfies those criteria (not all should be a yes answer 😂) it is an excellent option.

    Love the “do what works” attitude! I apply this to rescues too. Successful rescue is the one that gets the swimmer back in their boat and everyone is safe doing it. I’ve learned what works for my body and my boat. For example I’m probably never going to cowboy scramble. I’m short, have a higher volume boat and I’m not getting my chest on that boat. It’s not a tool in MY toolkit and that’s fine. If I’m back in my boat and paddling that’s the idea!

    I’ll be 64 in a few months. 3.5 years ago I weighed 315 lbs. I got divorced after 32 years of marriage. I bought a new travel trailer and moved into a campground on the river. I started kayaking again after decades of not yakking. I decided to get fit. I bought a mtn bike. I lost 100 lbs in 4 months. I think a gym is a waist of time. Living is bicycling, living is kayaking. Just stay busy and eat right, your body will keep up. Weight training is a waist of time. I’ve kept the weight off 3 years now and those two hobbies are life changing.

    A very interesting Video as promised Brett. Getting in and out of a Kayak is challenging for me. There is absolutely no grace in it at all. I sometimes just drop in, and then haul myself out, I have even pulled myself physically out of the boat via a handrail because I can't get my legs under myself to be able to push up and onto a raised bank. Luckily I am naturally very strong. Which is why a Canoe would be better for me. But wheres the fun in that.
    I have noticed that over the winter I have lost some level of skill and I would even say confidence in my ability because of the reduced time on the water. So this should start to be build back up and built upon as we are now back to weekly paddles at the Club. I am going to be working on my Tourer Awards this year through Paddle UK. I will also be attending a White Water Weekend in June, which will hopefully be fun. I will be in the correct boat for the water this time. Unlike in February were I have my Baptism of Fire on a River in Flood and in a Tourer.
    I think if you are getting negative critiques from other UA-camr's it could be down to the fact that they don't like that the tried and tested ways they have been taught and then pass on to others, may not be the best way after all could be hitting a nerve, and the first form of response for some is to attack. Being flexible in how you approach teaching people is the only way that you will truly be able to help those that want to learn how to do something, that like me have things that get in the way. So my Coaches try and find ways around some of it, to make what we do as fun and safe as possible. My Wife is a Teacher and our recent experiences has helped her be come even better at her job. One of the big things is that School isn't a fit environment for all to learn in and you need to look at alternative ways to help a young boy or girl get the most out of life. As we have found with both our Daughters. As school has been a nightmare for them, Both are very bright girls, but school just were not for them. So being flexible in how you teach and approach people that have trouble learning from the set way of doing this is a great skill to have and that will only have come from years of experience, coupled with being reflective in how you have taught over those years, and using that to make you better at getting across what you need to get across in a way that has the desired outcome. As for Negative comments, it is the curse of the internet and lack of decency on there behalf. Most would never say to your face what they say in the comment section. I have had that when I used to be admin of a Forum and Facebook group. then they would meet me in person and they would be nice as pie. being a big bugger probably helps me there. My eldest fell of a Horse during a lesson and member of Staff was to scared to come ang tell me to keep an eye one her. My Kids say it is because I have a resting Bi£ch face.
    I will look forward to the Nova Scotia trip. I wonder if the following years Trip is sailing based? As I imagine that being very physical and getting into shape would help with that. I could guess awy for a while and possibly hit on what it is you have planned.
    A brilliant video as ever Brett.

      @@AdventureOtaku I will look forward to that. I guess it is probably an age thing with some of us taking up Kayaking in later life. Probably a few like me where there are other factors of health that make it a bit harder along with not being as flexible with aging and loss of flexibility. I used to be incredibly flexible for my height and build. Weight increase certainly hasn’t helped either.

    You & Joey @turningpointboat are crushing it this year. Stay true to your message & belief. I'm entering my 4th summer of sea kayaking with my Exceed. 2021 me would have expected me to be rolling & L3 or L4 cert. I'm none & I'm a happy & successful kayaker that self reduces without a float & gets out 4 times a week in MN. My club utilizes me for class denos & entry level leadership. Could I improve more, sure but for a land locked paddled I'm happy and assured in my ability to assist others in need on the water. Most importantly I love kayaking & am a aware/safe paddler. I've experienced all types of instruction and frankly some of the early stuff turned me off from gaining certifications. I'm thankful I've made a couple paddling friends who are L4 & L5 instructors that understand it's not one method fits all and who encourage growth when the kayaker is ready for it. Open safe & positive mindset in teaching/coaching will always win and keep people engaged and wanting more. Shine on, paddle on✨✨

I agree in reality it isn't strange, it works well for me and my body and what my body can do.... which is what the point of this video is about....ive now gone on a bit of a rant when I should be editing.....

    Hey Brett, I love your instructional video's, but I also enjoy the way you always keep things open for other one's opinion. I wonder how long a video it would become if you'ld put every 'but that's how I feel about it' and 'that's what works for me' and other sentences you use to tell the viewers that it's simply your opinion (and not a fact that works for all), in one long row...
    Just keep up the good work and ignore the people who don't understand the difference between explaining how you came to an opinion, and stating a fact.

    I don’t comment much on any UA-cam videos except yours. The reason I do is because you respond quickly with constructive information. I enjoy your videos. You’re down to earth and I appreciate that. Everyone has their own opinions on things. I think those that comment can make them constructive if they don’t agree with you. People can be cruel and they likely have no idea into how much work goes into making these videos. If they feel the need to bash you, stop! Think about how you sound before making the comment. Don’t watch yours if they are so opposed to the way you do things. I guarantee most of us who read these ugly comments feel like that person is just being a jerk. Glad they’re blocked. I think you are correct about the dogma thing. It’s kind of self replicating because when you are new, you don’t always know what should be strictly observed due to safety versus what is some old crap that might even be wrong. I actually got taught a couple wrong things getting my private pilot certificate. One of the things had been hanging around from WW2 radial engine management, and was still being applied to regular pistons despite the manuals clearly authorizing the practice they were teaching people to avoid!

    I get a lot out of your videos. Thanks for sharing. As for boarding a kayak, I was somewhat misguided by the plethora of videos by "experts" insisting on involving the paddle as a crutch. Lousy methods at best and once I scored an all carbon Werner it became obvious that was a really bad idea. After a few launches I settled in to side saddle or the cowboy method you use on beaches and a three point step in/out off docks and steps. IMHO if you have decent balance and common sense launching/landing is easy enough. That said I have yet to launch into swift current or serious wave action because I paddle in a protected bay (Morro Bay CA). I am 70. I must agree that there isn't a rule book for this.

    I ditto many of the positive comments here, and I think us kayakers may have had some similar concerns on putting on and taking off our boats from their vehicles. I realize there are tons of videos on the internet showing different methods and home-made contraptions used for loading kayaks (perhaps many more for fishing kayaks because they are heavy), but seems like a summary hasn’t really been done that includes a good cross-section of examples. Maybe another survey would help on this. I am ready to send photos of my system when the time is right - it works for my kind of vehicle and fits my ability level. It’s just as embarrassing to accidentally drop a kayak from a car roof (and I have done this) than it is to take a spill during entry. As for critics, yea it sucks, some folks don’t value those like you who really want to help others, all they want to do is call knowledgeable people snobs.

    Your low brace turn looks like you can’t decide between doing a stern rudder or a reverse sweep and just leave the paddle in limbo between the two without really bracing while bleeding boat speed. I agree with adjusting methods to the student rather than the other way around.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  2 місяці тому

      No I was playing with the brace to get the turn where I wanted. Low brace turns always bleed speed. I also only did it for about a second and a half to illustrate the concept of stroke integration.
