Even if the ancient Egyptians were African-adjacent (which contemporary depictions show them closer to Phoenicians/Hittites/Assyrians/Babylonians than anything else)... Cleopatra was not ancient Egyptian, she was a member of the Ptolemaic Dynasty who were Greek in origin. There is a 0% chance she was black. The whole ordeal and defensiveness of the showrunners was just so preposterous it is honestly hilarious. Don't call yourself a documentary and then act indignant when people call you out on your BS. A black actress playing Cleo is as accurate and cool as John Wayne playing Genghis Khan, pilgrim.
Representation doesn’t matter though, right…you can’t BOTH complain about backlash against white washing AND piggy back on the Egyptian SJWs complaining about cultural appropriation…well, I suppose if you passionately hate black women you’d make an exception…but yours not fooling anyone.
There has even been some DNA testing from mummies, at least one I remember indicated that a) most of the modern Egyptians are descendants of those people, not "recent invaders" as the Afrocentrists seem to claim and b) those mummies had fewer, not more, sub-Saharan markers in their DNA than modern Egyptians have. But no, nothing matters except what some people WANT to be. And yes, a black Cleopatra, or a completely black ancient Egypt, why the hell not if that makes you happy, make all the series and movies you want (as long as you have the money... well, if they were well done and entertaining stories I suppose they would get good enough an audience - although it might still piss off Egyptians) but do not call them documentaries or docuseries then. And if they want a real documentary of black Egyptian rulers, why haven't they made one of the Kushite dynasties? Everybody agrees that those were black, as far as I know. And the Kushite empire itself did rival Egypt at times, and even had some powerful queens ruling. So why Cleopatra, instead of trying to make one of those queens better known? Because everybody already knows Cleopatra? Choose only already well-known individuals? I guess that is why Afrocentrists seem to be more interested in trying to blackwash at least some parts of white, or at least paler, history - because that is already well known - instead of trying to find out and popularize real sub-Saharan African history. It's easier? Or on some level, they actually think that white folks were always more powerful and more inventive so what they want is at least parts of the white history for theirs. Hm.
And in my opinion Cleopatra is the worst of the bunch! Because of the false nature of their intent! Rewriting history? WTF? getting sued be the by the egyptian goverment made sense to me!

I thought The Fall of the House of Usher was pretty good, personally. As a Poe fan, I was genuinely shocked how well Flanagan managed to weave together so many stories and poems into an arcing narrative. Some references were pretty obvious, but a lot were far more subtle and missable, and spoke to a deeper understanding of the source material than I was expecting. It wasn't perfect, but it was definitely my favourite of Flanagan's Netflix projects. Couldn't disagree more on that one.
Also the tonal shifts were pretty accurate for a Poe adaptation. His stories mixed heartfelt tragedy with dark humor and explicit pulpy violence just like the show. Honestly it was one of my favorite shows this year.
I'm glad you wrote this because, yeah fuck this guy, The Fall of the House of Usher was a great show. One of the only shows this year I actually felt engaged in and wanted to watch. Boyfriend and I literally watched the whole thing in one day.
What an awful list. I agree with most of these, but The Fall Of The House of Usher is a very good season of television. I don’t know much about Edgar Allen Poe, but it would have been much more cringy if it went verbatim to his original work. It took and left just enough and was a cool original concept inspired by poetry. Loki season 2 is also, probably Marvels best original Disney plus show; it isn’t preachy, boring or stretched out, it’s just like a 6 hour movie that doesn’t get muddled by a worthless B plot with Renslayer
I managed to finish Ahsoka, can't say the same for Obi-Wan or S3 Mando. But when I was done I asked myself, did I watch all the episodes? Apparently, I had. But that's how empty I felt after finishing it. Like, hmm, yeah, oh well. House of Usher was fine. Not the best, not the worst. I didn't watch a second of the other 7 shows... thank God. It's a good thing the revisionist history Anne Boleyn show that starred a woman as black as night came out last year. I'm not sure we could have handled 11 horrible shows in one video.
I've not seen any of these shows, & I'd never even heard of several of them. I am, however, greatly enjoying my thirtieth-anniversary re-watch of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
I love your songs, it's really going the extra mile to drive home the shittiness of these shows while providing an extra dash of creativity and humor to set your channel apart
Accurate. HOWEVER... I liked House of Usher. I thought it was an interesting take on original Poe storylines. It wasn't as good as Hill House but I really enjoyed some of them, particularly Telltale Heart, Cask of Armantellado, and The Raven. I agree with all the others.
The wife and I actually enjoyed The Fall of the House of Usher. Granted it's completely weighted down with woke dog shit but if you love shows like American Horror, this show is a fun watch.
3:06 You know what? Apart from the usual platitudes over your video, that song (and in particular, your Kiwi-take on a USA southern accent) was pretty good!
I want a modern version of Robin Hood, but this is how it would look: A wealthy son joins the military, and returns after his father dies to inherit his wealth, but finds that the government has used its authority to take the land (imminent domain) and pay him a paltry sum. Disgruntled, he purchases a small patch of land in the country and begins to build a home, seeing how the other people in his community are screwed over by the corrupt politicians, and begins a guerrilla campaign against the local government, stealing from the tax collectors. Now tell me that isn’t cool as hell and way more accurate to the source.
What’s was weird for me wasn’t Lilly rose depp …was weekend that wrote the thing and literally was acting and literally touching her and kissing. … it’s just weird ..he might even be a nice guy but didn’t he wrote that part for somebody else?
Hayden Christensen, Ray Stevenson and the 2 child actors Arianna Greenblatt and Evan Whitten(Young Ashoka and Jacen Syndulla) were the biggest victims of Ashoka and it’s bad writing and directing. 😔
They are all pretty bad but Velma has got to be #1. It's an unrecognizable generational-level embarrassment a million miles from the tone and structure of the original. Based on the hand drawn, innocent, cheesy but endearing short stories about a talking dog and his very different friends solving spooky mysteries, we get an updated version with gore, sex, drugs, and racial politics. Thank you for making a beloved classic into a nasty divisive mess unfit for children. At least they straight up left Scooby out of it. This show stands as an objective insult to its own source material hiding behind a thin guise of diversity. The creators of the original would be puking in their soup. What has their hard work become? Why does every classic property have to be 'deconstructed' so self-centered semi-celebrity snobs can cash in on better artists' work? How does that pass as creativity? This is anti-culture that deserves all the criticism it receives and more. The people who made this consider the original problematic but found this version to be worth making. Should tell you all you need to know
I enjoyed the 1st 2 seasons of UPLOAD. The 3rd (and current), though seems to be meandering into woke territory. Also, certain things didn't make sense. As you said, that seems to be a problem with so many writers not knowing how to end or develop their shows. Many start out with a bang, but end with a whimper.
Call me old but damn, I miss shows like The A team, Knight Rider, Airwolf and a dozen other 80ies classics. We are in the absolute worst decade of television series.
The biggest problem with all of today’s programming is the lack of originality. They lack imagination. They can’t come up with an original story, so they remake an old one with their new “woke” messaging. Creativity is dead. It was sacrificed on the altar of diversity. South Korea is the rising star in the entertainment industry. America has lost its ability to put out quality content.
House of Usher shouldn't be on the list. There are so so so many shitty shows and that one is really good. It's not the best show this year, but it's still good.
Crikey, when you put them all together it seems apparent that mass entertainment is basically doomed. However, I've just binged 'Blue Eye Samurai' on Netflix, and despite adhering to THE MESSAGE it was excellently written and looked amazing; I was enthralled, Next up, Onnimusha!

I still can't get over unironically committing cultural appropriation, making a mockery out of the thing you stole, then calling everyone else "racists" after the cultural vandalism you just committed. Yet that's half the TV shows on this list. Not just Cleopatra, but Robyn Hood as well.
The fall Of the house of usher did not deserve to be on this list. It was actually watchable tv compared all the other trash. Especially when you had Witcher season 3 and Gotham knights.
Cleopatra has been reimagined before though. Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra had her (originally played by a boy) speak his blank verse which clearly isn't historical. The makers should just be more clear they're doing a reimagining and not being historical

@@matman000000 I might even agree with that myself. Not my top pick, but easily up there.
I'm glad you wrote this because, yeah fuck this guy, The Fall of the House of Usher was a great show. One of the only shows this year I actually felt engaged in and wanted to watch. Boyfriend and I literally watched the whole thing in one day.
@@OhThatsNikko I'm not sure this guy likes...anything, really. Taking the 'bit' and driving it into the ground.

36,000 subscribers, Echo. Congrats and well deserved!
Magnificent, but the soul-crushing will continue. Apparently we haven't seen rock bottom yet, and that's a very scary thought.
People will look back at Bridgerton and laugh…

I managed to finish Ahsoka, can't say the same for Obi-Wan or S3 Mando. But when I was done I asked myself, did I watch all the episodes? Apparently, I had. But that's how empty I felt after finishing it. Like, hmm, yeah, oh well.
House of Usher was fine. Not the best, not the worst.
I didn't watch a second of the other 7 shows... thank God.
It's a good thing the revisionist history Anne Boleyn show that starred a woman as black as night came out last year. I'm not sure we could have handled 11 horrible shows in one video.
Gotta admit that the first racist thought I had about that Anne Boleyn was that she had been beheaded, not torched.
Thank you - the Fall of the House of Usher wasn't great, but one of the worst ten shows of 2023? REALLY? No shot...
I've not seen any of these shows, & I'd never even heard of several of them. I am, however, greatly enjoying my thirtieth-anniversary re-watch of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
Yo!! I'm watching ds9 right now too! Probably my 13th time too!! 😂
It's sad that we just can't get good shows like that anymore. 😕
I love your songs, it's really going the extra mile to drive home the shittiness of these shows while providing an extra dash of creativity and humor to set your channel apart
Can we have a full version of stamp on your man please?
That was hilarious!
Are you high?
House of usher was fantastic
Accurate. HOWEVER... I liked House of Usher. I thought it was an interesting take on original Poe storylines. It wasn't as good as Hill House but I really enjoyed some of them, particularly Telltale Heart, Cask of Armantellado, and The Raven. I agree with all the others.
man this channel is criminally underrated.
I think we should all take a minute to appreciate what these people have put themselves through so we don't have to.
I want a modern version of Robin Hood, but this is how it would look:
A wealthy son joins the military, and returns after his father dies to inherit his wealth, but finds that the government has used its authority to take the land (imminent domain) and pay him a paltry sum.
You’re doing a huge disservice to Wakanda Forever. It features TWO stunning and brave teenage girl technology geniuses!
How bout some pile of shite called She-Hulk and Rings of Pawah? Not even honorable mention? Cmon, they tried so hard to suck ass. "How dare you!"

I'm sorry, Midnight Mass creschendoed perfectly in a culmination of everything that had been set up. To me it did, anyway.
Interesting list. I definitely agree with The Idol, Velma, Cleopatra, and Robyn Hood. Those shows are just ridiculous.
What’s was weird for me wasn’t Lilly rose depp …was weekend that wrote the thing and literally was acting and literally touching her and kissing. … it’s just weird ..he might even be a nice guy but didn’t he wrote that part for somebody else?
The Fall of the House of Usher was dope
I am proud to say that I watched none of those shows
Enjoyable video. The challenge wasn't finding 10 shows. It was ranking them. They all deserve the #1 spot.
We should make a more positive, Ten Best Shows of 2023, but honestly, would we get to double digits?
Yeah... youd have to chop two fingers off but you could
I think the biggest surprise was one piece
Hayden Christensen, Ray Stevenson and the 2 child actors Arianna Greenblatt and Evan Whitten(Young Ashoka and Jacen Syndulla) were the biggest victims of Ashoka and it’s bad writing and directing. 😔
My family enjoyed it and I think it was a lot better the season 2 of Loki
@@loonytunescrazy 👎👎👎👎. No it sucked and Loki S2 was also meh.
@@chasehedges6775 Well I enjoyed it
Asswoka was a steaming pile of donkey doodoo. Objectively so.
Every time I hear of the house of Usher. I'm thinking of the singer Usher. And that somehow is a dramatization court case about him and his family.. .
You're choices are good, I approve
Should tell you all you need to know
The digs at Yellow Flash on your videos are spot on! lol
I burst out laughing at the Loki part of the video
Why?

I enjoyed the 1st 2 seasons of UPLOAD. The 3rd (and current), though seems to be meandering into woke territory. Also, certain things didn't make sense.
As you said, that seems to be a problem with so many writers not knowing how to end or develop their shows. Many start out with a bang, but end with a whimper.
God bless you and your work Echo ❤❤❤
People can say whatever they want, as a Poe fan, I loved Fall of the House of Usher, especially Mark Hamil and Carla Gugino's performances!!!!!!!!!
Oh I get it now, the Skrulls are a metaphor for modern “asylum seekers”.
Love your essay, thank you so much! Subscribing.

Still have another month and a half to go. It's possible (and likely) there may even be worse shows to come.
Also don't forget John Prince was negotiating with Robyyyyyn in good faith and he was doing nothing wrong.
@Echo Chamberlain, I'm anxiously awaiting your singing album to drop! Seriously, though, great review, as always. And keep giving these shit projects both barrels--they deserve it.
the most difficult part is selecting JUST 10 this year ... out of the NUMEROUS amount of Woke Dumpster Fires ALL over TV and Movie screens. Disney alone could put 10 of their own shows on this. So I applaud you for being able to do that. And I agree completely with you in regards to all of these. I would have expected to see RINGS OF POWER and WHEEL OF TIME .. but i guess those were 2022? In addition, season 2 of Carnival Row was horrifically bad as well, in comparison to season 1. Obi Wan Kenobi (obi woke kenobi) was so unbelivable TERRIBLE!!!!
Only likeable underrated female character in Disney Star Wars is Omega from Bad Batch she is cute she shows emotions she cares for her team unlike Ahoska makes most cringest poses front of camera and somehow stays fine running through the ships bolts blasts and even fight them in space what kinda of lame idea is this?🙄 Filoni is toxic simp
I still can't get over unironically committing cultural appropriation, making a mockery out of the thing you stole, then calling everyone else "racists" after the cultural vandalism you just committed. Yet that's half the TV shows on this list. Not just Cleopatra, but Robyn Hood as well.
‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ should not be on this list
The fall
Of the house of usher did not deserve to be on this list. It was actually watchable tv compared all the other trash. Especially when you had Witcher season 3 and Gotham knights.
The idol was the wrost in my opinion
It hurt me as a weeknd fan and it was so cringe
10 still feels generous and not enough
Cleopatra has been reimagined before though. Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra had her (originally played by a boy) speak his blank verse which clearly isn't historical.
The makers should just be more clear they're doing a reimagining and not being historical
I love your sarcastic eloquence, thank you, far more interesting than the shows you reviewed.

Why is the fictional English series so bad? It's not historical, it's fantasy.
I only clicked on this to see what adjectives you're using to describe balls.
I didn't know these shows existed
i watched Velma to see how bad it is... stopped at minute 8, where a baby face protruded from pregnant woman belly... dang...
but man Cleopatra... dang man... that film literally a crime against history
Why there were Yellow Flash's sign in the end of the video? Some kind of collaboration awaits us?
"The Idol" (HBO)
"The Mandalorian" Season 3 (Disney+)
"Secret Invasion" (Disney+)
"Cleopatra" (Netflix)
"Robyn Hood" (Global Television Network)
"Ashoka" (Disney+)
"The Fall of the House of Usher" (Netflix)
"Loki" Season 2 (Disney+)
"Vlema" (HBO Max)
"Queen Charlotte" (Netflix)
