Welcome back to another Life At Sea episode. In this vlog, I will be showing you a very rare occasion where I got a shore leave in Algeciras, Spain.
It was a beautiful short trip with many many embarrassing moments & great memories. I managed to VLOG most of it & had fun doing so.
Merchant Navy does offer some great perks but after the COVID-19 strict regulations, shore leave is a far-fetched thought. Not to forget the ISPS regulations which has made entering & exiting a port extremely difficult.
Nevertheless this is a very big Pro of this sailing profession & I am happy with whatever I got.
Hope you all enjoy this transit from the North Atlantic Ocean to Straits Of Gibraltar & finally Algeciras Spain.

Hi, Alan here. Glad to see (not SEA) that you are allowed shore leave once again. When was that decision made?
Love your blogs, always reminds me of my container ship travels as a passenger in 2015 and again 2017. Europe to Australia, both through the Panama Canal and then through Suez Canal.

I felt as if I was hanging with you in Spain during the shore leave. Keep posting new videos and take us with you on your journey.
When there is an opportunity to go ashore, just do it ! Don't regret later in life for not doing it. Some sacrifices have to be made and sleep is one of them. You are better off on container ships when it comes to the proximity to the city center unlike tankers who are berthed far away. With fast turn around of ships these days, shore leave is becoming a rarity and you can consider yourself fortunate if you can step off for a few hours.

You seriously looked exhausted man. It's almost like what you feel when you stay awake the whole night before exams to prepare and just sleep for a couple of hours. Anyways, beautiful beautiful editing as always. Happy Recovery..!!

I know over 50-60 persons who work on cruise and OBOs
Out of them 4-5 are my relatives
Most of them are friends and few are neighbours.
And i clear my queries n doubts here from Karan and he replies patiently without delay
I have a cousin who is the Captain of a tow boat. He’s been doing six on, six off for thirty years. Doing everything from two weeks on and a week off at one company to a 30 days on, 30 days off on another. A crazy schedule but he loves the job.
A very tough task to do 6-6 for so long on big ships

Not very attractive conditions.
Months on end on board for a few hours or days on land. Additionally the destinations are huge port cities.
I much prefer joining a specialised vessel with 1 month on / 1 month off or working as a service technician on offshore wind turbines with a 2 weeks / 2 weeks rotation.

Your videos are good. You are lucky because you are employed in a good company. I have seen similar videos related to shipping in some other channels too. But I always wonder most of the seafarers boast about their salaries & about ships. The shore people think seafarers are dam rich but most of the time this is not the case. But I do agree it is a well paid job & you can have a good standard life. My million dollar question is why don't you show the other side of the coin. For example
1.The videos showing hatch cleanings.
2. The videos showing tank cleaning where you can't even sit down because petrol/ diesel products will burn your bum.
3. How many seafarers are employed in good companies?
4. Are you aware of the companies which won't even pay monthly wages properly?
5. How many companies pay all around year wages? Only few companies.
6. How much we are stressed & overloaded with commercial pressure at times.
7. How much we miss our families specially the kids? How much our life partner suffer to manage the domestic pressure alone? They have to depend on servants, in laws and their parents.
8. I knew some of my fellow seafarers who couldn't even attend their parent's funeral. They were Crying in cabins.
9. What we earn is nothing when we compare our salaries to some shore jobs.
10. If you say you are a seafarer at shore good girls will run away. Most of the time seafarer's temporary good friends are prostitutes.
11. How many times we come across with crazy seniors.
12. Most of the Seafarers dream is to save some money one day & quit sea. Later do some shore jobs.
13. There were times we did continuous STS operations without break for months. Few hours sailing in & out. The continuous cargo operations will make you crazy. No extra crew was provided company's cost cutting policy.
14. How much of unnecessary paper work in the name of ISM? The check lists which the marines use as tick lists.
15. How many dangerous operations we do in our seafarers life?
16. The accidents & incidents.
17. The politics onboard specially with Southeast Asian crew.
18. It is not easy to manage the crew. The crew is most of the time not so educated & their behaviour is not so good.
I do respect seafaring job because I earned my living through seafaring.
What my point is there are negative aspects related to seafaring too.
