  • Today Mrs Barry and I are taste testing a load of bizarre foods that you'd probably be surprised to find out I've never tried before! So this is my first time EVER trying an oyster, tonic water, Turkish Delight and more. Some of these honestly surprised me and we both had to be a bit brave with a few of them, and there are a couple I definitely won't be having again!
    Let me know what weird or unusual foods you want us to try next!

      turkish delight comes in so many flavours. definitely worth a proper try, i can't stand the rosewater one either. if you can find a decent mediterranean / middle eastern grocer, there'll be an aisle full of it.
      Fry's also do a cherry turkish delight, which is lovely, incase you can't find more traditional :)

    Tonic water is really interesting stuff - it used to be wayyyy stronger than it is now and used to have to be 'watered down' with gin to be remotely drinkable - it literally was medicine - and was an anti-malaria drug. Now the amount of quinine is so small it barely tastes of it and mostly people use it to water down the taste of the gin which is the reverse of how it was original used.

      @DaveF. 9 місяців тому

      @@markusstorzer4545 Indeed - but imagine it ten times as strong but you have to drink it to prevent getting malaria. It's literally a 'tonic' - no wonder they drank it with loads of gin and fruit. I don't mind the modern stuff - and - for some reason - it's still really good at relieving muscle cramps.

      Fun fact - there's a story about Clarrissa Dickson Wright on location filming with other celebrities when she collapsed and was taken to hospital. Turns out, her gin and tonic consumption was so substantial that she had quinine poisoning from the estimated 6 pints of tonic water she was getting through a day.

      You don't use it to water down the taste of gin. If that was the case you would use water.
      You use it because it compliments gin.

    As for Turkish Delights, they're much better on their own and not in a chocolate bar. I'm not a big fan of the rosewater ones, but you can often find some pistachio flavoured ones that are really really good. Where I used to live in Montreal, Canada, we had this big farmer's market where there was this counter run by a Lebanese family where you could find baklavas and turkish delights to die for!

    I believe the origin of gin and tonic comes from a way to take quinine doses in British Imperial India.
    Lokum aka Turkish Delight is a cornstarch confection that can come in numerous flavours, but I think the one that became famous in Britain was likely the rosewater flavour. Another source of it is to go to Turkish takeaways and see if they have cubes of powdered Turkish Delight (covered in a mix of icing sugar and cornstarch to keep it from being sticky, instead of chocolate). I have only ever encountered a package of Turkish delight with a lemon flavour that I hated because the whole packet was far too strong for my taste, beyond the rosewater flavour, but I did see an Azerbaijani cooking video where the lady in it was making a large batch of pomegranate lokum. That sounds really nice.
    Dried rose petals can be used to make tea. Stick them in some freshly boiled water and let steep and try it with a touch of honey, and maybe a splash of lemon. I am less than eager for the more herbal teas, but I have in the past added rosebuds into my fruit tea mix (primary ingredients of that mix are hibiscus and rosehip shells, with the rosehip being the fruit flavour since rosehips are berries).

    • @ArchangelShine
      @ArchangelShine 9 місяців тому

      We also make rose petal juice, which is essentially boiling the petals with sugar. You and up with a syrup that can be stored for a long time and when you want to drink it, you just dilute it with some water.

      Indeed the old time tonic water contained such high dose of quinine it needed a healthy dose of gin to help mask the bitterness and the gin and tonic was born.
      Modern tonic water do not contain enough quinine to help prevent/treat malaria anymore

    Thank you for confirming why I never want to spend my money on oysters. People usually serve them really really cold, like ice cold to the point of no flavour, or deep-fried, but it's just never been appealing to me. Love the farming method though, so cool.

    You should try oyster cocktail shots. In a shot glass add a little cocktail sauce, your oyster followed by another a little more cocktail sauce, a couple drops of hot sauce & a squeeze of lemon juice (you can add a little beer or vodka but I don't drink) then take it all in one shot. You might also like BBQ oysters, my family opens & cleans them then they go back in the half shell onto the BBQ until the consistency you like them. We either add a little butter, herbs, lemon & Ramona cheese or a little cocktail sauce & cheese, close the lid & cook for about 1 minute until cheese is melted, allow to cool for a few minutes & enjoy.

    I’d probably also suggest your first oyster shouldn’t be from a supermarket fish counter. The only time I’ve ever had them was on holiday in Scotland - had them Bowmore style with a little whisky splashed on them. Shockingly delicious.

    i love raw oysters. but the funniest thing i have ever heard said about them is :
    *_"Oysters; a salty booger served in a rustic ashtray."_*

    I could certainly put together a list for you to try.
    Growing up as an Army brat in countries like Germany, Belgium, Malawi and Hong Kong, I was very used to lots of very different food, including frogs legs, raw beef, mussels and lots more.
    Have poussin haggis and oysters regularly (not on the same plate of course), but in recent weeks really enjoyed the ostrich steak I had, almost as good as crocodile that I had on holiday in Thailand where I'd also have dragonfruit, mangosteen, lychee, mango, papaya and lots more.

    Oysters- lemon juice and tabasco sauce- Frank's hot sauce and a bit of chopped scallion- DEL-ISH! If you don't want to eat them raw- pan fry them-- dredge then in flour first- then dip in some beaten egg and then into some breadcrumbs; never tried seasoned (Italian) breadcrumb yet- but once you get them coated- in a hot pan with some oil- place them into it and pan for 1-2 per side; brown both sides and place them on a plate and sprinkle some seasoning salt- DELISH! OR you can always deep fry them like you would for fish 'n chips!!

    I make Turkish Delight for my family every Christmas - if you don't like rosewater, you can use freshly squeezed orange juice instead. I typically make one batch of each.
    I've never seen it covered in chocolate, though.

    If you haven't already, how about trying some northern classics. For example: savory duck, tripe, cockles & winkles, pease pudding, black & white pudding, eccles cakes and proper haggis from Scotland.

    6:43 there were some other things on the counter - Eccles cakes and something that could have been haggis? And a tin Barry was holding. I thought he was going to try those too.
    I liked the format, I hope there's more to come. Perhaps try some things from the cheap L supermarket when they have different theme weeks?

    My grandmother drinks a glass of tonic water before bed, and has for as long as I can remember, to help prevent leg cramps at night. Apparently, before she started this, she suffered often from nighttime leg cramps. Someone (maybe a doctor) recommended having a glass of tonic water before bed each night, and she's done so every night since and had awesome results.
