Hi friends! Here it is, a complete breakdown of my color palette and how it came to be. I have been SO excited about making and sharing this video! Which are your OG non-negotiable colors like black, blue and white are mine? 🖤🤍💙
Thanks as always for watching, I'll see you in the next one 🎥

My non-negotiables would have to be...navy blue, that deep royal green, and bordeaux...plus light gray for contrast. If someone removed all other colors but I had those, I could remain quite content. It's amusing to me how simply listing those colors makes me feel very happy.

Black and white are so good, I don’t even consider them colours haha those are the ‘fill in the gaps’ colours for me. Love chocolate and dusty rose colour (cool tone) although as a pale olive I am cool toned in the winter and warm toned in the summer 😅😅 really enjoyed Thetis video!!!

I think you look good in black, as you are pale like me some other colour or scarf or jewellery near your neck can difflect the harshness of black or just a stronger lip colour or blush. I really suit navy blue but it just isn't "me". I have a fairly neutral complexion and a really mixed style. I am a very intuitive shopper and do own alot of statement clothing that I only wear occasionally as my day job doesn't allow me to dress this way. So I feel often I make colour work for me. Last year I was attracted to gold/mustard/custard yellows- strangely yellow means hope- so coming out of Covid I think that's appropriate. I also alternate between gold and silver jewellery.

I think the gold looks so nice on you because of your hair. It blends in really well and looks seamless. I think hair colour is such an important part of choosing colours not just skin tone, I've realised it can make or break an outfit colour scheme. Great vid, thanks for sharing :)

I agree, being a clear winter, gold still suits me, especially in earrings and necklaces because of the golden sprinkles in my eyes. The gold makes my eyes even more crisp green and I somehow look fresher. I recently found a technique where you pick your colours based on the colours of your body, for example the colours of your hair, eyes and eyebrows, but also your cheeks when they blush, the exact colour of your veins etc.

I absolutely love navy clothing. When I was first beginning to think about having a more minimalist capsule wardrobe I was working as a health care assistant and was only 20. I was caring for a really lovely woman who was a quintessential English country lady. She had the most wonderful wardrobe full of navy clothes. A classic navy Barbour jacket, a navy Burberry trench coat, navy skirts and twinsets. I remember her saying “navy blue is so stylish, don’t you think? It always looks so neat”. Ever since I’ve always agreed navy is extremely stylish. It’s like basic black, but you just put a little more thought into it.

I'm glad you choose the colours that you're happy with, rather than listening to other people's opinions. Sometimes people are truthful but a lot of times people are jealous and try to put others off because they don't want them to wear something. Keep staying in your own lane and knowing yourself more than others know you. You are in a league of your own. ❤️❤️❤️

I have somewhat similar colouring to you and my quizzes typically tell me I’m a “soft-true summer” type. I’ve found this to be SO helpful, even tho I love black and some times people tell soft summers that black is too harsh. I found that still love it, but at certain times of the year when I’m less tan and more on the pasty side I choose a nice taupe or white neutral near my face. I find this makes me look less tired and washed out during the winter! These kind of tips have been a game changer for me, because although I won’t limit myself with colour “rules”, there are definitely colour strategies that help me level up and feel confident depending on the season etc!

    • @MelissaPressler

YES! A professional color analysis is the BEST money I’ve ever spent. Seriously. No more guessing about which color to buy because I know what makes me glow. Now people see me, not the shirt. I’ve also found replacements for my fave colors. For me, black washes me out- but a cool toned grey is magic- whiter teeth, clearer skin, bright blue eyes. Game changer.

For me, I've found that if there is a color I really like but that doesn't fit my palette, I can still buy some non clothing related item in it. Like I have an oat colored insulated bottle that I love looking at soooo much. My pistachio green wallet is another example.
Another trick is that I will wear more "fun" colors in my bottoms instead of close to my face, so I have some colorful summer bottoms that make me really happy!

Rules, whether other people’s or your own, can be so limiting, you have to listen to your HEART. People say I look great in pastels but I hate them, my palette is quite dark, which makes me HAPPY. Like you I’m cool toned & contrast-y (light skin, blond hair but dark brows & lashes) and am not fond of monotone. I love mostly darks with a pop of something bright! Thank you for sharing your process, you look awesome so it’s working for you. 😊

Also, a shameless video request/things I would like to hear your opinion about -- (1) Cool tones seem to be more "on trend", compared to having a lot of peach, orange red, olive, etc. in stores in the 2000s/early 2010s? And (2) Cool tones IMO come across as a bit more professional -- how to deal with this if warm or neutral colours suit you more?

So interesting! Love this video! By decluttering I've achieved to be more concious about colour, my biggest mistake used to be buying ivory, creamy stuff instead of white, which definitely suits me the best. My other 'unnegotiables' are Black and, the most, Blue, klein the most but baby as well, but in winter I need some of green and light grey and, sometimes, red. And it's funny but now I'm very into a pair of things I used to 'hate' when I was younger, navy blue and baby pink 😜 I quited wearing silver, really dont know why except that I felt too 'cold'! And here I am, now wearing my gold medal I was given as a child, that has been in its little box for ages 🙈😂 you never know! Thanks for your wonderful work, Naja 😊😊😊😊

Also as a tip, I love colors, and I associate certain colors for each season, but I still want a smaller wardrobe, that is why I change my accent colors seasonally. So if you really associate pastels for summer, maybe you can substitute some of your colors. For example my accents colors in winter are a deep forest green, a ruby red and navy/royal blue, while during summer they become a tomato red, a bright green and orange. My basic colors are still the same tho (camel, baby blue, ivory). Hope this helps ☺️

I love you advice! I have a dark warm olive skintone ( Dark Autumn) and wear a ton of black, which is not supposed to really suit me. I think part of it works because of my hair, but its also about the vibe you want to give out. My favorite color for you is intense royal blue. The video was really interesting, I am also cool toned, just with more contrast in my features (dark hair, fair skin). I look best in black, no doubt about that. However it took me a long time to grasp this and narrow down my wardrobe to mostly black, along with some pieces in bright white, blue denim, cool beige and one exception which is a brown shearling jacket ;-)
Even with just wearing one color like black for example you have endless style options. It's also the cut and the vibe, the material and texture that create your look. All black could still be anything from goth to athleisure... so I don't think at all that sticking to your best colors is limiting in any way.

Hi Naja, I usally never write comments, but I wanted to let you know that I always look forward to your videos. Over the past 2y or so I have become more conscious about fast fashion and the effect on us as humans and our planet. I have always loved thrift shopping, but more for the cheaper price I got quality items for, rather than the environmental aspect. I've reduced fast fashion shopping to the bare minimum now, something I'm very proud of. After learning more about this (from you and other sources) I started a closet tracker in January and will keep track of what I wear, cpw, and the reason for buying new items. I hope to reduce my closet as well. I'm excited for this journey I'm on!

For summer wardrobe try shirt dresses. I find that they are quite versatile and comfortable. Think also if a flowy fabric or a structured fabrics would be comfortable. For example a tencel denim vs cotton in a spaghetti strap dress.I only wear dresses and you are right that once I figured what I love it was easier to pare down. I used to wear a lot of black but stopped and wear mostly printed dresses, denim dresses, and black and white dresses with either a blazer or a long charcoal or navy duster. I had to stop listening to influencers suggestions about what every woman needed and think about what made me happy. I am supposed to avoid dresses with prints because they’re going to make me look frumpy but I love them and I have a very edgy hair stykw so it doesn’t make me look frumpy at all. So now I don’t have decision fatigue I feel like I have lots of options even though I only wear dresses. In the winter I wear fleece tights with knee boots with my dresses and I’m so comfortable. It is taking me about15 years to go back to how I used to dress before I started listening to advice. I have spent a lot of money on pants that I really don’t wear and on skirts that I really don’t reach for. I prefer a one and done piece. If jumpsuits were more comfortable in terms of putting on an off I think I would also buy jumpsuits. Thanks again for a great video!

Oh my goodness, I think black looks fabulous on you! I'm surprised anyone has said otherwise. (I believe you are spot on in regards to your contrast.) Even I, who personally have better luck with navy blue most of the time, still have some black garments that I really love.
This was such a fun and fascinating video! Your walking through the decision process was not only interesting but very helpful for validating or filtering my own decisions on colors. Loved your passion as well 😊
It's funny, I was thinking of you yesterday while doing some intentional shopping...I almost went crow-brain looking at items not on the list but then stopped and thought, "No, don't do it! Don't be distracted by 'shiny objects'!" haha.
Your videos continue to reignite my excitement for a curated wardrobe. As I am reaching the final layers of purging, it is becoming increasingly evident how creative one can be, simply by simplifying! Thank you, as always, for your inspiration and for such valuable content 😘

The right orange hue can be transformative on skin. I have cool to slightly neutral undertones and I pair it with pale denim and it looks great. Navy is also beautiful imo for the same reason. Beige on the other hand is so difficult to get right. I love trenchcoats in this colour but have yet to have found success it finding the right tone for me.

I think part of the reason you're struggling with summer clothes is that we associate cooler colours with winter, and warmer colours with summer. I know you said in the video you are not that into pastels, but I have personally found pastels to be the best way to make cool tones work for summer, I mainly wear light pink, baby blue, lilac and mint green (and white) and it feels very summery while still complementing my colouring (very similar to yours)

Maybe you're right. Each spring I'm extremly attracted to one or another pastell tone. One year it's a mint green, the last years it's rosee and babyblue and sometimes the pale yellow Naja mentioned in her video. So for me it's an option to integrate pastells in my spring and summer capsules and go with burgundy and emerald green for autumn instead. In winter I love all the very cold colours like a light grey, icy blue but mixed with bordeaux or berry tones and an emerald green for the christmas season.

It took me almost a year of studying color for my wardrobe to get it right. I am a warm light person...golden light skin tone, golden blonde hair, tourqpuose eyes. I try not to wear black near my face but I sometimes make exceptions little black dress etc. lso I LOVE ocean colors any shade of blue but the warmer blues are my best.
I like navy as my darkest cool color in blazers and coats. I look best in warm rather than cool browns, a warm camel, yellow undertone cream rather than stark white, clear red, sunflower yellow, gold, bright orange that was a color this year, peach as my light pink, and coral all are great for me . I am saying this for anyone out there who doesnt know colors but has my coloring it took me a loooong time to figure this all out. So if you are a light warm skin toned with golden hair try these.
I bought a fushia blazer and shiny blouse at Zara a few days ago the forst tie I ever bought this color and normally I dpnt shop Zara but it looked so good on me when I got it home I realized the reason it looked so good was it had far less blue than fuschia usually does...so I am your opposite but a light like you. I must have been craving more color. I wore a Banana Republic orange blazer all summer...last summer I wore a clear red blazer alot. I keep the under items close fitting top or blouses and slacks neutrals white and I DID wear blacks and dark charcoal grey with that orange this summer and loved it. This fall that fushia blazer I am going to mix with orange tops as I saw on the runway. When younger I NEVER would have worn such bright colors together...I am loving all the orange, why I am so atrracted to it I dont know, I have never in my life worn bright orange before. Now the same with the fuschia for Fall.I have a blouse in the same orange and a close sleeveless top and pants too...all those oranges mixed with basics those have been my favorite items all summer.

(Not an expert on colour seasons definitely) I’ve read that with the 12 colour seasons, it is based on your face without your hair on your head, especially if your hair has been dyed. I’m not saying your hair has been dyed but I would argue that you’re one of the winter color seasons because there is such a strong contrast in your eye iris vs the sclera (white) and also with your dark eyebrows and lighter skin. Your colour palette would probably match a true winter with the black, true white, blues, and magenta.

And I realized that some colours will be always be in it an some are changing sometimes ( years ago I loved burgundy, now I skip it, once I tried and loved yellow for a couple of seasons and now I am obsessed with dusty pink and 'pigeon blue' as we say here.

I really loved yellow metals, not silver, and I rarely wear my silver-toned items now and stopped buying them. I also let go of the recommended colors that I always found so hard to style: turquoise/teal and purple (all variations). I added in the cooler browns that I love, too. Browns were unavailable in the shops for twenty years or so, and when they came back, I wanted them.
