Mum's Dad was a painter and I was a kid growing up with computers. He'd asked me how on earth do the computers represent colour, and from all the stuff I'd learned at uni, figured it'd be a cinch. And I think it really would have been. That is, if we'd both been fortunate enough to have watched him take the digital leap of faith. I think it never happened because he'd convinced himself he wouldn't understand.
Then, nearly 14 years after we lost him, I read a comment like yours.

I fully expected him to beat the key, but I did not expect him to already have a tool for that exact purpose that just needed to be inserted once and removed. It’s like watching an action movie. When I was in middle school, one of my classmates used a homemade "killer key" to disable our teacher's cabinet. It contained her school supplies and stuff she could hand over to the kids that needed a pen, paper, or whatnot, and a few extra books for the courses. It was this old wooden cabinet with a top-sliding door.
Basically, he just snapped the key in, no idea what he was hoping to accomplish. But, when the teacher arrived and saw it, she just shrugged, tried to pull it out a few times. Probably realizing it was stuck, hopeless to remove, she just punched through the door, breaking the lock free from the door itself. Then she just slid the door back up and acted like nothing as she distributed papers for our exam.
Anyway...I kinda wish I had known this trick as a kid, cause I would have loved to show off my skillz to that specific teacher.

Back in 7th grade when we didn't particularly feel like having a certain class, we'd find a couple of small sticks, like from leaf stems, and put them inside the lock of the classroom where we would have said class. When the teacher came up to unlock the door, the key would smush the little sticks and it would jam up the whole thing, making it quite impossible to open the classroom. They would either have to remove the smushed bits of sticks one by one or bring a lock cutter.

Nice. We did something similar to a kid we wanted to torment in HS. Our lockers had these sliding tracks in the door that engaged hooks on the frame to lock them. We took the eraser end of a pencil and broke it just right and stuck it in the top of the track and slammed the door. It took the janitors a solid day to get the thing open and they pretty much destroyed the door in the process. The kid had to get loaner books for the day from his teachers. Good times.

@@cjhickspe1399 That's amazing. I got another funny one.
Again, somewhere around 7th to 9th grade, one of my classes was Metal Works. We learned welding mostly ("learned", because when you give a bunch of 13 year olds some metal working machinery they tend to just fuck around with it), and other things like metal shaping, with hammers and buffers and what not. So we had these huge metal tables in the workshop, and someone found out that if you placed some sort of fabric on the edge of the table and slammed it with a hammer, the fabric would cut completely clean, like a pair of scissors. So the next logical step was to take someone's backpack while they were busy welding something, tighten the straps as far as they would go, place the excess strap on the edge of the table and slam it with a hammer. Two hits and it would cut it off completely.
So now when the poor sap was done for the day, he'd put on his backpack and go "Oh, that's strange, it's too tight", then try and loosen the straps. Since there was no more strap, the backpack would fall off and be rendered just a pack, as yoy'd be unable to hang in on your back.
I thought this one was fucking hilarious because of the sheer inconvenience this caused and the ingenuity of hammer+table. Kids would carry their metal pieces in their backpacks, plus all their regular books and notebooks, and it would be a huge hassle without being able to just hang it on.

Back in the mid 80’s I invented one of these keys, by pure accident. I was guessing at key depth trying to make my own set of manufacture tryout key ring. I managed very easily to get the blank stuck in the cylinder plug and shell. The only thing that saved my stupidity of the day, was I had the complete cylinder loose and clamped in a Bench Vice. I used an awl and small screwdriver and pried open the housing shell to release the driver pins and springs. After this I used a cylinder plug holder, and cut all my spacing, brushed the blank down, then loaded the cylinder plug to try my depth set. I wasn’t trying to make a cylinder blocker, but I did. Who knew that it could be marketed. I guess I should have patented it. My manager called me one night and said he needed to secure a exterior door. I asked him if he had a non working key on his ring (other than his GGM) I told him to break a key off inside the mortise cylinder, and I’d deal with it in the morning. It was a quick fix for the middle of the night, saved me from having to come in.

That's 50 entries, 50 leavers, 100-something just for people pissing and breakfast and lunch are not even in it. That's getting close to 500 uses a day, 2500 per week and in the 10 years that lock has been used, it has seen 1,500,000 uses. Show me a lock cylinder that can deal with that and show the same sort of quality after that much use. After that, fire code. Maglocks are normally on and drop the magnet if the power fails. You cannot lock people in. Yes I know you will come at me with the bloody crashbar doors but those are shit and belong on fire exits only.
