Thank you for show casing this beautiful yellow flowered shrub. It will go on my list to find for next season here in WA US.

I have them, but the middle of the plant always keeps drying up am I overwatering it or is the sun too hot? I love them, especially because they’re yellow and bright and beautiful.

They are nice and hardy and very resilient, so assuming your soil is reasonably free draining, over watering (especially now in the heat of summer) should not be an issue. Take a tip from David and scratch the soil beside the plant, and if under the surface, it looks dry and light colored, then it is OK to water. But, if it is darker in color and looks moist, then it is probably OK to hold off for a few days.
If it helps, here's a link to a video on hydrangeas: ua-cam.com/video/jLqmDOMPQJs/v-deo.html where David gives some tips on watering. At the 4.30 minute mark, you will hear him explain that once shrubs like these become well established, they don't need that much watering except of course, during any prolonged hot and dry periods. You will also hear him explain the technique uses to water our plants.
Finally, when your plants become a bit open and straggly and develop brown bits in the centers its OK to prune them. Potentillas respond well to trimming, and giving them a "haircut" to shorten them back and remove any dead parts (once the main flushes of flowering wains), will stimulate new fresh, bushy growth and renewed flowering too. We hope this helps.

When you propagate these, do the green leaves tend to fall off, or should they stay on? I attempted to propagate this plant but left the cuttings used in the wind (in moist soil) and the green leaves have crumpled up and can now be knocked off with a light brush of the hand. I used rooting hormone in the homes of helping the cuttings root but I am worried the cuttings got damaged by the wind now. I've since brought it inside, and didn't think digging up the cuttings would be a wise move since I had just transplanted them and doing so may cause more shock to them (if they aren't already dead...).

When taking cuttings in summer, its important to keep the leaves on the cuttings until they make and build roots, here's a link to a video that explains more: ua-cam.com/video/p9QKvqSPl3o/v-deo.html and shows you how we do it.
Just be aware that it is illegal to propagate any plants that are protected by a Plant Patent.
The plant featured in this video (Agertina "Chocolate') is not protected by a patent, so it and any others that don't have a PP and number after the name, can be propagated without permission from the breeder or introducer.

Yes, that's one of the things we've noticed too. Potentillas are great for planting in areas where varmints like rabbits and deer etc. are a problem. Fortunately they come in a wide variety of types, so as time and space allows, you can plant taller, wider, and ones that come in shades of white, pink, and red and orange hues too.
Here's a link to our website that will give you more information: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Potentilla

We distribute our plants through a network of partnering garden centers located throughout our Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic USA States. Elsewhere, we suggest you ask at your local garden centers and see if they might be able to help you locate them.
