Now you know where the phrase "Slower than Molasses in January" came from. Doesn't take a lot to freeze up! Great job, bet you slept good that night LOL God bless
Thanks for watching nmdispatchlady.
He already knows what the catchphrase means older than molasses because he and Erin both used to be my old dhhs caseworkers and they both used to say it to me when I was being a slow poke when they used to live in Maine
Mike, one way to get your hay ground would be to find someone close that has a tub grinder that will grind it for you. It grinds it in a tub that turns and the knives/hammers are underneath the bales.
Maybe store future COB totes on a pallet in the heated shop in the winter so the molasses doesn’t freeze before running through the ArtsWay.
Thats a good tip Robin. Thanks
Try using dry molasses. It will not get sticky in warm and freeze in winter. We switched years ago and made life way easier for us
Mike, your finishing school feed has got to be some of the best stuff around. I know it's a lot of work mixing it all together, especially by yourself, but well worth the extra love that makes your meats some of the best. I bet you wish Jeff was there to help you out again. Stay warm and safe my friend.
Mike, I would love being able to do what you do, even half what you do. But, being an elderly single female, there's no way I could do it. I enjoy your videos. Please keep them coming. 💜💜
Thanks for watching Joyce.
I felt so bad for you with all that extra work! I thoroughly enjoyed watching Pepper on the Goat Cam playing with his mom, aunts and uncle today!
Just another day in Wyoming Melissa. Have a good weekend.
Definitely better utilization of the feed if it can be ground / cracked. We feed ground corn to our replacement heifers to tame them down.
congrats Doug on your meat package win!
Signed up for your newsletter, been checking out your store and will be ordering steaks when you get more in. Still waiting for Ethel to have her baby 🤗
You guys have come along ways! I remember when you hauled bags of feed from the feed store.🥵🥶🥶🥳🤠❤👍
Thanks for hanging with us for so long. I dont miss those days!
For as fast you go through your feed you could use a bigger bin or even a small gravity wagon. It also depends what you want to use and how much room you have in the barn.
We are getting to that point Jason. Not sure which direction we will go in the future. Several varibles to consider. Thanks for watching Jason.
Cool to finally see the ingredients of your feed mix for the cattle.
Needless to say, that the next bag you get isn't a brick you have to chip away.🏋♂️
Hi Mike Thanks for sharing another video. Everyone stay safe and warm have a bless week hugs and prayers😍😍see you next time Our Wyoming Life
Your welcome, and thanks Wykeisha. Have a good weekend.
I mentioned in previous videos when you first purchased that mixer that you should place a tarp under the machine for spillage......has molasses in the bag of mix which is why it's probably froze solid
You are so smart Mike I like how you fixed it so it won't waste the feed. You're a lot stronger than me I don't think I would be out there in the cold, this lets me know how much you care for your animals
Thanks for watching Nita.
My dad. Always reused, repurposed or reclaimed any material that was available on our small farm. Way to go Mike.
Thanks for sharing that Cathy.
Although it looks cold, you've got a clear beautiful day there in Wyoming.
Fascinated by the spreedsheets you have now. My dad was a farmer and there was nothing like that for his cow feed. Looking forward to ordering beef and pork chops! Thanks for showing the dedication and hard work that goes into a farm.
Im thankful for having spreadsheet available. Hope you enjoy the Beef and Pork chops, Have a good weekend GetNNRV.
Darn! I saw you and Jeff do something like this once before and it was no where near that much work. Hope the animals enjoy their "dinner" and I know we will enjoy it in a few weeks 😋
I hope they do also! Thanks for watching.
It is amazing to see the "tools" that are used to help you make nutritional decisions. I know a bit about what you are doing and it is impressive. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Love watching all the farm work. Hard work and in the cold- amazing all that goes into raising cattle. Thanks for sharing.
I think you did good to get done what you did! Anyone who has worked with grain that has molasses in it knows how it will clump even in dry warmer conditions. Then to add the cold and wet to it makes for a fun, not, time as you know. But hey, you got it done, great job, that's what us farmers do, get it done how and whatever it takes, right. Thanks Mike for the awesome video, I hope you have a good evening and a great Friday! See ya soon.👋
Thanks Dan.
254k subscribers! So awesome to see this channel continue to grow!
Hi Mike, we are up in Montana and just started out with highland cattle. We are small (less than a dozen) scale but would like to know what you feed your cows and pigs prior to finishing. We just linked up with FBN thanks to you letting us know about them by the way. They will be a great resource for our little place. It seems like most of the folks that raise highlands do a “grass finish” but I don’t think that’s the route we want to take. We also have a protein tub out for them. I feel like we are winging it but they all look great. I just want to be sure we are doing things right. Thanks for the content!
This channel is so educational. Thanks Mike for explaining everything in ways that make us 'city folk' understand the process! Great Job! (lucky chickens!)
You always make it all so very interesting! Thanks!
Thanks Brumby.
I remember shoveling ear corn in with my grandpa in the mid 70's.
Mike, thanks for sharing this with us. I always wondered what all was in the feed. I really enjoyed watching the video. I always learn so much from you.
This isn’t going to help now, but perhaps in future, what about getting a plastic kid’s swimming pool to put the auger tip down into? It would catch all the splatter and miss when dispensing grain from source bags onto hopper end of auger. When all done pouring you can then dump spilled grains back into batch. Keep pool behind bin for ongoing resource guarding.
Thats not a bad idea Fred S. Thanks
Mike... Just a suggestion you might use a tarp to lay under feed ben of the mixer that way if you have a spill again it would make it easier to gather it up without it getting wet in the snow. I'm assuming the drier the feed the better it will store without mold forming in the feed.
Hey Mike, love the channel. I always look forward to your new videos. 👍
Awesome! Thank you, and glad you like them Kevin.
It tickles me every time I see the grinder mixer. Grew up in Iowa where every farmer had one, but I dated a guy who's dad milked cows. We couldn't go out on Saturday night until he/we had ground feed for the week for the milk cows lol circa 1970
Great recipe. I’m very close on what I’m doing with just a few changes I’m able to get easier. I ended up with 12% protein and good fiber. Hadn’t thought about Timothy grass pellets but am using beets and alfalfa.
Nice video guys, reminded me of mixing Hog feed with my uncle a long time ago when I was a kid. You all be safe and have a great week!
A back in the 90s we used a machine that looks like a modern day small bale straw chopper to grind hay for the mixer and it worked great the only draw back if you didn't have small square bails you have to use a pitch fork.
Also molasses gets hard in cold weather. Let you tote get warm in the shop if you can before mixing.
your a good man mike i could not do what you do. Change your life for the unknown. Plus you both found each other with similar abilities to compliment each other. All the best wishes to all of you . from Florida
I appreciate that Grant.
Another great video, thanks for sharing!
Congratulations Doug great video Mike keep up the great work
Thanks for watching Jarrett.
Good job, Mike 🤠
Oh, does this bring back memories of watching my dad do this, during the winter in western Montana. No where near as scientific though. A few hay bales came of the pickup and went into the grinder up front and grain or oats were shoveled out of our grain bin and into the littler hopper on the other side. Pretty much I think the formula was - keep adding stuff until the top started to lift off.
Thanks for sharing our wyoming life I hope you have a great weekend.
Have a good weekend too Austin.
Thank you very much our wyoming life.
I just signed up my favorite old caseworkers and mom said hi and she wished u guys never left dhhs department and u guys are the best favorite folks in my crazy family life
Awesome video Mike!!!!!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Our wyoming life I hope you have a great weekend and a great time at fbn in new Orleans sorry I was not able to make it.
Wow, Mike that was a lot of work. I'm impressed with the calculation you do to prepare the exact mixture for the steers. I'm wondering if you make for the pregnant cows? Thank you for sharing.
Great video.
Thanks again.
Thank you Jesse.
Great video. Thanks for sharing and you definitely got your workout for the day. God Bless and stay from Southern Oklahoma.
Glad you enjoyed it Nancy.
Always an adventure over there!
LOL If a day went smoothly I'd be worried! Thanks for watching.
🎉CONGRATULATIONS DOUG🥳🎊
What's the protein content in your alfalfa pellets? You should add that to your calculation to make sure you don't overload them.
Please stay warm and safe brother from the imperial county California.
You spelled commiefornia wrong
@@ChrisLascari it's called crazyfornia.
@franciscosandiego3026 I've never heard that, I just see the politics coming from there and don't want that to spill over into the rest of out amazing country. You commies ca. Keep it
What a job !
Thank you Brenda.
Brilliant Mike! Thank you soo much for your explanation n link!!! Exceeding Abundant Blessings 0/
Molasses yup! Had the same problem with my horse feed.
Hi Mike, long time watcher, didn't you have the same problem with COB with molasses last winter also?
Is there a way to get dried pelletized molasses to add?
Could have been a Math Teacher. All the effort involved into that batch. If you were to add labor. Costly. You handled it like a pro, Mike. Didn't get all bent out of shape. Got a good work out. Animals will thank you. Good to see to back. Thanks for sharing
I dont even consider labor into the equation for most things here on the ranch. Dont even want to think of it! Thanks for watching Gene.
Watched the video on my new Android TV last night. I just hope that the finished feed comes out of your bin easier than the hard lump you put into the mixer.
Congratulations Doug on winning the meat package
Yes, Congrats
Was that a new structure in the background.? Are we building something? Will we be seeing it on future blogs? Meat came frozen, and also so delicious.
Molasses is the shits in the winter. I got tired of busting up clumps so I switched to pellets when it gets cold. Those cattle will eat grain with or without molasses.
may I suggest you look into powdered molasses for future feed mixes, I know molasses encourage my cows to eat the feed well but i do not mix my own but it might be a help to you mixing your feed
You should add powdered molasses in 50 pound bags when you mix it that way it won’t pack in the big bag.
Another great video as always. I hate to tell you this but no mixer likes high roughage mixes. I’ve seen brand new top of the line mixers clog from high hay percentage mixes. They haven’t figured that one out yet. I’m sure you’ll figure it out though
Put hay in after putting some corn oats barley in
I would suggest adding the mineral after mixing in the cob and other ingredients.
I hope the new mix agreed with them and has them put on the weight they need to graduate finishing school!
Stay warm! Omg that weather is tooooo cold. We’re at 69 today and I’m cold In Az
I will do my best to stay warm its a constant battle this time of year.
Back in the 1970's I worked at a large slaughterhouse. We had a madmen as the maintenance department engineer. He purchased 3 or 4 skids of 55 gallon molasses drums. We did not have the mandated water pollution system installed yet so he was mixing molasses with the contents of the slaughtered steers bellies and feeding it back to them. Contents appeared to be halve way between chewed up hay & manure. Steers would check it out maybe because sweet smell from molasses. They did not eat it. While helping guys move the molasses found out that it was the heaviest of any thing we had in 55 gallon drums. Was heavier then drums of lubricating oils, edible mineral oil ( used to lube air saws that cut meat ), etc. Once they got water pollution system running they removed over 50 55 drums of undigested hay & manure from entering waste water every day and thousands of gallons of blood that is harmful to fish ( might effect oxygen level in water ). Only one wastes company would accept this hay/ manure mixture. They mixed it with other waste then buried it in deep holes. Maybe 25 years later after grass grow over the dirt on dump site they built a few single homes that was told had major problem with houses sinking.
Hey Mike, you was talking about Grinding Hay, what about just a Cheap wood Chipper. Put a Tube over the Shute???
Great video. Except for the hole in the side I wondered if maybe you had dropped the sack up and down a few times with loader would have broken it up for you
Have a great day.
We use corn bean meal and hay we get small square bales and put it in mixer one flake at a time
Thanks for sharing Jeff.
Signed up for the newsletter
Thanks MaineUSA
Love watching the Mixer,, sorry you had so much Trouble Mike..
It just goes like that sometimes Mark.
I'm glad to hear you e added molasses to 3 away for beef and hogs.
Are the pork hocks smoked?
wow it would be nice to have Jeff to help
Yep, it would have been.
i handle those bulk bags all the time, push the bag against some thing solid, building side, fence post before you open it ,this will break up the contents and it will empty easily, good luck!
❤️hi Mike
Hi Barb!
Still signed up
Consider order g without molasses then add just before feeding
Do you have screen for grinder . One we had we had a hay screen it would grind up so it won't clog . We put the hay in last.
hello Mike. was thinking that it might be easier to leave the-molasses out and put it in the mixer at the end somehow.
Hanging Scale is cool. I thought it was a spreader bar.
Mike I hope u had a little time to relax after all that work
LOL Relax? What is that you speak of? LOL
Mike get some good square bales hay to grind flake it small and your grinder mixer will work just fine
I was going to ask if you bring those bags back to be reused. I guess that would be a no.
Which of those bottles in the background did you pour into the DEW can ?🤔🥳
Dew bottle under mouse. 👍👍👍
Wow that was a lot of work to get that mix out of that bag
Sometimes it is, but thats the way it goes Rebekah.
My guess was that the 200 pounds of molasses was 50% water which I suspected would be mostly gone. However if it was frozen because the molasses were not dry, then I was wrong.
Looks like it would be easier to use the cattle scale
I hate to be the safety monitor person, but you need some guards on that mixer. Would hate to see you get hurt. Your doing a great job with what you have to work with.
Is this your weekly ‘meal prepping?’
It might because the hay is damp. There is another v-log I watch and the use a similar machine to mix feed. She notices when the hay/clover,etc is damp the rotor get cluggy.
I dont think dampness was the issue, but it is something I will watch next time. Thanks for watching Teena.
is that 1710 weight with or with out the tear weight bag chain ??
Should get bagged stuff day you need it
❤
I would op out of molasses in the winter and put it in as a pellet or something or not use it
Actually probably not needed. we don't feed any at all to ours
it's froze-up because. of the molasses the size of the calves your feeding you don't that drop it out of the COB.
Cold and molasses don’t go good together. I got a ton of feed mixed a month ago and had to finally bring the feed tote in heated shop to loosen up
Probably should have done that.
Man what a big lump that turned into, bummer!
Just as well, perfect amount,!
JO JO IN VT 💞💨❄️☃️
Yes, that clump was big! Could have been bad had it let go at the wrong time. Have a good weekend Jo Jo.
