I'm glad to see you branching out like this, Bjørn. Fascinating! Readers: let's hear some suggestions of other high-tech companies that Bjørn might tour.

Did not expect this video from this channel, awesome to see you discover the world of logistic automation systems. I work as a software engineer designing and implementing these systems, I can tell you it is very fun and challenging to develop and test such a complex system.

Which company do you work for, if you don't mind to say? Sounds like very interesting problems and something you can endlessly optimize.

This was so fun to watch, worked at a supermarket distribution center when I was young, approx 25 years ago. Insane to see how much has changed.

Very interesting. Thanks Bjørn. Tons of lifting and moving equipment. Sympathy for the maintenance team.

I used to work at a large supermarket Distribution centre warehouse and I can tell you it's game over for many jobs.

Yes indeed it is game over. With a dwindling population in most Western developed countries this is necessary because over the next few decades there won’t be enough people to do the work.

Wow. Impressive stuff! Writing all the software to control that would be pretty tricky. Sounds like Robert is originally from England!

Loved shopping in Rema when I was in Norway in 2022 for a month. Nearly all the stores had staff who spoke excellent English, were friendly and helpful. Also used the Joker chain of shops but they tend to be smaller places.
Next time you head to The Netherlands ask Maersk Terminals at Maasvlakte if you can visit their fully automated container terminal - driverless automated, electrically powered cranes in the back park and on the quayside with driverless electric automated trucks to carry the containers from the park to the ship cranes. It’s a sight to see and they have been running fully automated container terminus for many many years. Seagulls and rabbits can be a problem though………..

I once worked in a similar facility for two weeks and had to do renovations and expansions to the facility.
It wasn't quite as big and not as modern, but that's where the gold of the Corona era was made and sent from there, "the holy toilet paper"

Fun content Björn. You could go visit one of the companies sing offshore windmill maintenance. The use of sensors and optimisation is quite cool. As well as just the sheer size of the windmills. Interesting to hear the story how they are optimizing the run cost to make wind more competitive than other forms of energy.

As someone who did inventory control in a sporting goods distribution centre 25 years ago interesting to see where technology has gone.
I was watching a video about Amazon and saw a worker throwing boxes directly into a trailer, seemingly randomly and without pallets. Seemed very inefficient by comparison.

Interestingly, they don't have the lights on deep into the storage system. Probably saves a lot of power, and the robots don't need it to operate.

i worked for JYSK in Uldum, DK; for 18 years as a warehouse-worker and at my beginning they had installed the robot-cranes in the highbay-storage.
Later on they introduced the A(L)GVs (Automated (Laser) Guided Vehicles). I thought they were pioneering in the process of doing the loading of the HB.
Now i see that Rema indeed is beyound and far more in to this automation-stuff than i'd thought possible.
At JYSK, they still continue to pack pallets by hand, that may come down to the sizes and weight of the boxes, but i know they did a trial-run with a robot for emptying containers filled with uneven boxes placed on slipsheets. They never estimated it to be a great solution so they skipped it...
Interesting to see Rema picking and packing without human interactions.. except when the pallets are tipping over and everything needs to be packed manually ;-)
    Thanks!

That’s pretty efficient I wounder if they hve any requirements on how pallets should be received for them to unpack I can imagine not every pallet looks great at arrival

Impressive robotic automated distribution centre, of course when pallet shipment reaches customer other than a forklift to unload from lorry it has to be unpacked by humans (maybe one day even supermarket backstores/product shelves will bring automation 🤔).
