I have a 5D Mk2 and before that a 5D and I agree that the shutter sound is so satisfying - it just feels so "right" and professional. And the menus on both cameras are really simple - to me it's the closest thing to a film SLR in terms of the simplicity - no scrolling through endless menus and sub-menus like on many more modern cameras. To me it's not just about image quality it's the relationship you have with the camera that is just as important.

Thanks for sharing, the 5D Classic really is something special! I have been shooting with it since 2009, and have compared it to around 20 newer cameras - 10 of them I have owned and most of them sold after some use. None of them, including the EOS R, was even close to the "magic mojo" of the 5D. I've given up on all "upgrade" plans and decided to stick with the 5D for the next 10-20 years :) For me all the other digital files is "lacking" compared to the Classic, so now it is only 5D + some film shooting for me. Again, thanks for sharing - and that 40 mm lens is brilliant!

Thank you for sharing your camera experiences and your views on the 5D Classic 👍 I like your saying “magic mojo” for the 5D 😁 I too have had and still have other cameras, including film, but the 5D is the one I hold very dear and continue to invest in. Yes, the 40mm is such a gem of a lens 😎

I fell in love with the Voigtlander 40 mm f/2.0 Ultron SL II lens (available with Canon EF mount). As a semi-manual lens (aperture set in camera, focus - manually) it definitely slows me down, but that's good - I put more thoughts into my photos.

I love the simplicity of the camera! I have been shooting for a little over a year and it has helped me move from learning exposure with the camera to focusing on composition and style quicker. I tend to make my photos about 1/3-2/3 stop dark in AV mode to help with highlights and darken shadows because I live in a desert area with lots of sun and hard shadows.

I was bought 5d classic in 2018 year and sold around 2020. I have previously Canon 7d, 40d still have 5dm3, 1dx, Nikon d200, d700 and today arrived 5d classic again. I was regretting and honestly this camera is like old Mercedes mint condition which you feel is not modern, is not fast but give you this mechanical analog feeling how everything works perfectly. The shutter sound and feel is amazing. The simplicity and pure photography experience is so close to analog era. But this camera is not everyone and have lots of limitations. Personally another Legend Nikon d700 is much modern camera but 5d classic for me is gkued to the hand and grip is perfect so comfortable. Im so glad I bought again ❤

I’m late to the comment party here, but I too love my Canon 5DC which I bought in 2010 as a move up from a Canon 50D.
A couple of years after purchase the rear screen failed. I could still see the histogram and menus, but the image quality became unusable. I shelved it and purchased a 6D around 2012. Also a brilliant simple camera. It had more features but I found it to be similar in colour output. This camera was stolen in 2017 and replaced with a 5DMark IV, but I never really loved this camera and sold it, and all but one lens (the 40 mm pancake) in 2021 and moved to Olympus M43. At the same time I realized that I should forget about chimping and trust the histogram on the Canon Classic. So I dusted it off and shot some tests with the 40 mm lens fixed to it. When I loaded the images to my computer, finally being able to see the captures, I grew incredibly excited. The images caught by that lens and body combo were glorious! I love my Olympus gear, but this gem of a camera and lens combo are my frequent EDC setup. I plan to buy another body in the event this one fails completely. Not being able to see the images on the camera screen makes it like a bit of a through-back to the film days reliving the excitement of seeing your results when the pictures came back from the lab.

I still have my 5D, consigned to the old camera cabinet... the oldest camera in my cabinet is an old Zeiss Ikon, I never used it though, my father gave it to me and my grandfather used it about 80 years ago.
My oldest camera that I actually used was the Minolta X700, I toured Africa with it in 1990.
I also have older SLRs like the Minolta SR-2 for the fun of it (first Minolta SLR, a 2nd hand purchase on ebay) you should hear the massive clunk that makes when the shutter fires!

I just got a 5d with only 50,000 shutter clicks on it a few days ago for $150 USD, and absolutely love it! I've found that if I use center-weighted metering, that will take care of 90% of my metering needs on this camera, so even though this camera is more basic and requires more thinking, at the same time, it is more freeing. It really takes me back to when photography was so much simpler! I love my 6d, and I can push it much farther than the 5D, but there is something different and special about the way the 5D shoots and the way the photographs look......I can't tell you exactly what it is, but there is a difference. There is definitely more grain/noise at high ISO, but I use Exposure X7 editing software, and it does an amazing job of controlling the noise, and it makes it look more like film grain than noise. When using canon prime lenses wide open, there is a hint of vignette on the edges, which just adds to the overall look that I like. I like to compare the 5D and 6D like this: my 6D is like a modern sports car, and the 5D is like an older work truck......they are very different from each other, and each has it's own purpose, but both do their job very well.

Hi Robert, I’m happy to hear from you again and thanks for your update on your 5D Classic experience. You got a really great deal on your 5D, I’m always on the lookout for buying another 5D as a backup, but I still haven’t found one ‘that’ new yet. I agree, it’s very liberating to have a camera that doesn’t do absolutely everything for us. I sometimes describe my 5D as a film camera that just so happens to have a back LCD 😄 The images it produces are very hard to describe to someone who has never used a 5D, but to us, the images are ‘one of a kind’ 😍 If I really have to shoot in low light, very rare, the noise at 1600 doesn’t look too bad in colour nor black and white, but 3200 then the choice for me is only black and white. Editing software is pretty great at cleaning up the noise though, which is also a good option to have 👍 Such a perfect analogy for describing the 5D and the 6D 😄 so very true, all the best 🙏

I really want to achieve the "film" look without using film because the cost is just too much to keep developing.
I know ive read all kinds of stuff online but since you also had a 6d like me, would you really say that the 5d can get some special film looking shots that aren't possible on the 6d?

When I plan to go out on the street with the 5D, to balance the weight, I only chose one lens to go out with and my backpack only carries the essentials. I do have other lighter cameras in my collection, but it’s always the 5D that I chose 90% of the time 😊

The reality is that the performance of the classic 5D is more than adequate for almost everything. It represents the first full frame digital camera within reach of consumers. The limitations of the 5D are real, but also a reminder that the photographer should make decisions. You decide, are you after shadows or highlights, do you need or want or will a higher ISO work, is your shutter speed what you need, if the thing is moving -how best to capture it. It can be a pain, but it makes you think. The lousy screen makes you wonder about things and discourages you away from too much chimping and more thought toward best exposure. The jpeg engine allows you to make your own adjustments to flavor the output to your unique taste, while not unique in that control, for the 5D classic that control makes for a nice use for your own flavor out of camera.
The first Leica has its own charm, as does the first iteration of many things.
The 5D will never be repeated. Trust me on this, from one second to the next things are never the same, SO, photography captures a moment in an eternal flow of time. Each camera, with its unique sensor is its own signature, like a unique film, only one that exists for a brief time. The subtle nature of some differences will be lost on many, but, there's nothing subtle about the 5D classic. It IS definitely its own thing.
I like it for its simple menu, its limited ISO and its limited resolution. Best of all, all the Canon glass for it.
    Good work, best wishes!

Certainly the camera of my love. I have 5 other bodies including two pro grade DSLRs. Nevertheless, Canon 5D Classic is the camera that stays with me all the time. Because it's making me a better photographer each day. Lack of Auto ISO, Video option, Tilt-screen, Live view are great plus points for me. This is a pure photographer's camera. I love every bit of it.
As a hobbyist; I use it for landscape, street photography and occasional indoor portraiture purposes. Always shoot in RAW. In post; just convert it to jpeg after making slight adjustments of white balance. Due to its bigger pixels; it's better in low-light and dynamic range. Highest ISO upto 3200 is not a problem at all. Because I shoot landscape and street scenes in good daylight wherein high ISO is unnecessary. While indoors; I use a flash for shooting my images.
Bottomline: Canon 5D Classic is the best Canon camera for photographers.

Awesome video as usual Paul! Every one I watch about the 5D validates my enjoyment shooting it! I recently struggled doing some "pro work" with mine as the back was difficult to check critical focus (architectural shots) and low and behold, the af nailed pretty much all of them stopping down around F8 on a tripod. I like your stealthy tape mods. I might have to do the same to mine. I am debating picking up a battery grip but that would kind of defeat the compact nature of using the 40mm lens I suppose lol.

Thank you, Cody. I feel there is a big community of 5D classic users out there who really enjoy using this camera. I haven’t met any on the streets here yet though. There are a lot of 5D Mark 4 as well as Nikon D850 users. I do get people coming up to me from time to time asking what camera I have, the answer always raises a smile with them saying, ‘time to upgrade your camera’ 😄 I have never had any issues with the autofocus in this camera, given the style that I shoot. If I was offered portrait or architectural work, I wouldn’t hesitate, there really is a high level of trust I have with this camera. The screen on the back, it’s good for basic information, but checking critical focus…not so good. Black tape combined with the 40mm, people don’t even realise I have a camera 😂 Happy shooting Cody 📸

@@paulappleby2729 isn't it hilarious how the general population perceives there's innately something wrong with having an older camera and that it wasn't a conscious choice? I can't stand the keeping up with the joneses attitude of gear in photography. I will never be able to afford the newest and greatest fuji camera out there which was why I sold my XT2 to get out of that ecosystem where you constantly upgrade and compare. That said, I am finding more interest in the "vintage" category of Dslrs now lol...curious about the Nikon D700 but couldn't justify spending $200 more vs my 5D...it would be a toss up whether I buy one of those eventually or just buy a backup 5D body

Hi Cody, I like your observations 👍 There is a lot of pressure on us from all angles to buy the latest, upgraded camera gear. It’s hard not to get sucked into the ‘all that is shiny and new, is better’ market. I found what keeps me grounded is my needs always outweigh my wants 😊 Looking back into the vintage gear market is such an adventure to try, there’re so many amazing character lenses out there. I understand your curiosity, the Nikon D700 is almost directly in line with the Canon 5D and a sensible choice to make if you have lenses. My curiosity is about the RP. I have to get rid of my Fujifilm system first, then I may consider buying it at the end of the year, should be a little cheaper by then if the rumoured R7 is released 😎 All the best 🙏

Hi Duke, thank you for your question. Colour of course is very subjective, but for me, unlike most people, I really enjoy editing RAW files. I do also enjoy experimenting with the JPG profile settings in-camera to see what I get. After editing my other camera brand RAW files, also experimenting with their JPGs, it’s very clear to me that the 5D Classic files, both RAW and JPG stand individually uniquely different 😎

5D Classic is definitely a photographers camera. It's heavy, loud and lacks a lot of the creature comforts a lot of modern cameras have. Despite all of this we keep coming back. For me the canon 5d was the first camera I bought that actually made me feel like I was taking professional quality photos. I had owned other DSLR's prior to this one such as the D300 but this camera started getting me the paid work. I also remember the day I took this camera to a fashion show. I was mid show when... the mirror came off! Not to worry. Apparently this was a known issue. Cannon took care of the entire repair at no cost. This was a shock to me because the camera was pretty old at this point.
If you want a beautiful camera that will take beautiful photos while teaching you the fundamental joys that photography has to offer, then look no further then the Canon 5D classic.
