    Of the 373 German U-boats that had been built, 179 were operational or nearly operational at the end of the war.
    Conditions on board were horrible. Kind of like being in a metal prison with the additional risk of drowning.

    Death traps, especially once RADAR started being used to spot U-boats. Germans eagerly signed up for U-boat service at first, just to get out of certain death going to the Russian front.

    The U-boat captain told his men that they were getting a change of underwear. A loud cheer came up from the men. Then the captain said, “OK, Hans, you change underwear with Gunter; Gunter, you change underwear with Fritz; Fritz, you change…”
