It is a crime to let a GCB in a prime district to become vacant for 5 years because it is too dilapidated and inhabitable. SLA has mismanaged 26 Ridout Road and the loss of rental income from 2013 is still counting since the cost for restoring and refurbishing 26 ridout road is costly when there is already a loss of rental income since 2013. Mismanagement and disregard for 26 Ridout Road is why SLA must bear the cost and the scandal surrounding this GCB in central district of Singapore with a land area the size of several football pitches. Land and houses are in constant demand for sale or rental is why SLA must be accountable for the loss of rental income since 2013 and the cost of refurbishing and restoring 26 Ridout Road . I understand how Mr Shan feels. It is a crime to let a GCB in a prime district to become vacant for 5 years because it is too dilapidated and inhabitable. Loss of rental income for 5 years is why it is now leased to ministers with millions salary few can afford to do so . SLA has mismanaged 26 Ridout Road and the loss of rental income from 2013 is still counting since the cost for restoring and refurbishing 26 ridout road is costly when there is already a loss of rental income since 2013. Mismanagement and disregard for 26 Ridout Road is why SLA must bear the cost and the scandal surrounding this GCB in central district of Singapore with a land area the size of several football pitches. Land and houses are in constant demand for sale or rental is why SLA must be accountable for the loss of rental income since 2013 and the cost of refurbishing and restoring 26 Ridout Road . Preparation works were ‘in line with SLA guidelines’, do provide the quantitative data. For all other BnW bungalows, what is the amount spent by SLA as a % of the monthly rent? What is the $ psf spent by SLA vs other available for rent BnW bungalows? When was the last time maintenance work were carried out on the 2 properties? How much time has lapse since the last maintenance was carried out? Was it shorter than for other similar properties?

I understand how Mr Shan feels. Can you imagine giving your entire life to the country and then in return you and your family is being targeted in smear campaigns.I think because of his profession or experience he has a thick skin and he can deal with it. But his other family members may not be moulded the same way as him. One thing is clear - in no other country such a simple thing of minster renting a government house would be a topic discussed in parliament. But the intention of putting it into parliament is to make sure there is absolutely no doubt that there was any wrongdoings which is brilliant. So now knowing all the facts if someone is spreading falsehood, Mr shan and other government agencies has every right to go after this people and teach them a lesson for everyone’s sake.
Still he is a public servant and if there’s an issue With suspicion of conflict of interests, he have to clarify doesn’t he ? If he or his family are clean , what’s wrong of him explaining to the entire nation ? After all the opposition parties are elected to supervise PAP and they are just doing their job and to protect the interests of the people of this nation . Why Shanmugum threaten and issued warning against any queries instead of explanation? This shows how arrogant he is and forget not he was elected and empowered by the people of Singapore . So I feel we all should accept facts as facts and move on. Lets not sensationalise it. i think its absolutely unnecessary to even discuss this topic now because the judgement is already out there “they have done nothing wrong”.
I think most singaporean have a fundamental problem in their belief that in such an important role they must have abused their power to get some benefit in the rental. Because they feel if they were in their position they probably would have done so.
But they forget that Mr Shan and Vivian are not regular people. They get paid very well (based on how much they spent on rental i can guess their monthly salary is in the range of 80-90k). If you get paid so much and you have been consistently making this income for 30 years do you think you will risk cutting corners to get rental savings at the risk of public humiliation, losing your job, getting prosecuted? They aren’t stupid. It will be difficult for anyone to cleanly get away with a wrongdoing without ever getting caught. The truth will always catch up to you. For most regular people you have the ability to start over in a new company with new people and a blank slate. For Shan and vivian this is their life. I am sure all they care now is to leave a legacy- do something that’s remarkable for Singapore.

We at times probably discount what we have got here. Singapore is a very safe, corruption free nation with excellent governance where everything works. Rich sound GDP even in absence of natural resources such as land oil Agriculture etc. It’s a unique example, thank you
Singaporean have become a laughing stocks because they lived in a false economy and their livelihoods and their children's future are no longer secured when the incumbent government accept meritocracy at the expense of many for the benefits and vanities of the very few . Goodluck to global warming and miles of highway ,Tarmac roads , concrete and cement paid for with COE and fossil fuel cars and fossil fuel generated power. Back to the wild and into the forest is where I will go when the sun baked the concrete and the tarmac on the roads gets heated during the day and wears out the tyres on ur wheels. Cold showers were impossible to find in landed homes as most new homes r build with water pipes exposed to the sun and heat. Singapore is a model toy town and every residents lived cheek by jowl with their helpers and workers are normally imported as cheap labour to service the country in their utilities,drains and waste disposals managements.
