Man, never had to repair my PC and never ran into issues. I don't understand people saying that they have problems with PC. Running the same machine for 5 years, no problems with windows updates and compatibility, etc.
Don't have any issues with Mac users or people wanting to spend so much more.

Doesn't really cost more at this point. You can easily do music production on an M1 Mac Mini for $700, I've done it. I also have a Windows PC that I built, it doesn't crash or anything, but when you hop back and forth between the two operating systems you see just how inelegant & clunky Windows really is by comparison.

@@exiles_dot_tv How much of your production time do you really spend using the native menus and settings on the OS though? Most of the time on a music or video computer will be spent in your editor, so if you're not emotionally or financially attached to Logic or or Final Cut, then the PC will be better value.

@@exiles_dot_tv You are damn right, man. Mac os is smooth and look pretty. And I am falling in love with apple silicon. But I work with orchestral stuff a lot and Lord they eat up a lot of ram. And M1's 16 GB are not enough. And the good value for my type of budget end up on M1. M1 pro and max are very expensive.
Thanks for the answer, have a good day!!

An individual producer also needs to produce audio and video content. You don't put an RTX 3070 in your mac. Therefore, a PC is versatile for this activity and for a lower cost update. The musician has a smaller mentality, he only thinks about audio, he forgets that nowadays listeners want audio and video.

My main studio (and video editing!) PC has been upgraded several times, but this year was THE YEAR I was going to replace it. I had all the components picked out...but it didn't happen, because I simply refuse to pay $1500 for a $300 GPU or $5000 for a $2000 CPU. Once supply chain problems have resolved and the crazy price gouging stops, I'll buy my new PC.

Great video Doctor Mix! I understand the versatility of owning both Mac and PC. I would like to get a Mac down the road specifically for Music Production, but I currently use my custom built PC for all my artistic endeavors. It's good to have both, each have strengths in different ways. But I do love the customizable aspects of PC. Thank you for covering this topic! 😀🤙

Fractal Design cases are my favourites, though I don't like the holes in the front of this one. Top buttons are comfortable if it's positioned under a desk.
For mods and upgrades pc's are much more attractive. I also use a floor trolley to keep the case clean and accesible. Well done, shall we call it Paul?

For laptops, I’m a Mac guy. For desktop, I’ve been PC in the past. I’m tech savvy when it. Ones to doing music production via software.
My macs have always lasted longer than PCs, even when similarly spec’d. I use Reaper, Roland Cloud, Waves EFX, NI Komplete Ultimate. While they work on both platforms, I’ve had less issues on the Mac side. And I love core compliant midi/audio. No drivers.
I need replace desktop to mirror my laptop and I want to do PC but I have so much Mac Eco system going on in my family with phones, pads, MacBooks. I may have to go Mac mini or iMac.

This hits the nail on the end with the difference. For a laptop I will only ever have a Macbook Pro, my 2009 MacbookPro still works perfectly and never had an issue. Sure its a bit slow to boot, but thats fine for what i use it for. For my everyday computing I have a tower Windows PC. I just upgrade it as and when, been doing that since my first new PC back in 1998 !

I started music production back in the late 1980s with a DOS version of Cakewalk. I was luck enough to win a copy of the first PC edition of Cubase in a competition and switched to that upgrading to VST when it came out and used the various upgrades until 2010. I ran these on a variety of PC but always had an issue with timing on longer tracks, if I was using a drum machine set at a fixed BPM the timing on the sequencer would eventually drift out of synch. I changed to an iMac in my music studio in 2010 and started using Logic. Even though I had the same instrument set up the timing issue disappeared. Strange. I still use a PC for video work and I guess I will go back to a PC for music before too long as my 2010 iMac is on its last legs and I can't afford a new one!

I know how this feels. When I moved to middle school last year, I needed a stronger and faster PC than my current one back then, because I am currently studying Photo-editing and videomaking. So I opted for X-FIABLO GAMER 3 because it had alll the specs that I wanted. So I bought the PC in the beginning of 2020. And I had to wait half a year because of the graphics card situation. And on top of that, I use this PC not only for my school, but also I use it for music production
As always, I hope that you are safe

Hmm a discussion on audio comparing platforms that does not address the underlying audio engines on the respective OSes. I know price is always a core consideration but there are some fundamental differences in the way each platform handles audio that do affect things like latency, memory requirements and CPU load on both platforms.
At the end of the day though if the tool works for you and you are getting what you expect out of it then whatever you choose to use is the right choice.

    • @NikoNoxious
      @NikoNoxious 2 роки тому

I'm almost positive that we'd be seeing similar performance between similar systems. I'll give Apple 1-2ms latency superiority at best which, when you are dealing with 4ms minimums anyway and PC can easily hit 4.7ms or better, whats the real point. PC will almost always have more RAM for the price by a mile.

    • @TobiasTimpe
      @TobiasTimpe 2 роки тому

@@NikoNoxious It‘s not about latency. macOS has a much better understanding of what an audio device can be. Most audio devices on Windows still need ASIO drivers to even have more than 2 input channels. Same goes for MIDI. Windows always treated audio as an afterthought compared to macOS. I‘ve worked with both systems in professional environments for a long time and gotta say that macOS works a lot better.

Their build quality is excellent. And the total cost of the two builds is still less than that of a single Mac purchase. Suggest the name Vera.

Im my computer work life as a SysAdmin I was mainly a PC person running Windows, Unix, Linux, and other flavors of Unix. I did have a Mac and that came in handy for getting work as the multiplatform guy at a few companies including Mac software publishers. Then when I went back to working in the music I got back in to using Macs because it was simpler no juggling drivers because hardware and OS came from one company. Also the media company I worked for was all Mac. I still used PC's on Linux for all my non-music needs. Now being retired and doing music all the time I just use a Mac for everything, but if I wasn't into music I would be running a PC for reasons Doctor Mix talked about, cost less and you can upgrade CPU, RAM, video, etc to keep getting more life from the machine.
One good thing is when Mac's start slowing down because OSX keep getting bloated you can alway wipeout OSX and install Linux and have a fast computer again. Yes, there is an early version of Linux that runs on Apples new SoC chips.

As you are keyboard "live" player too, I would like to know what would be your advice about RAM choice for new MacBooks M series during a concert : 16, 32 or 64 Go ?
I have an old Macbook Pro from 2011 with 1 To SSD and 16 Go but I have now some bugs on stage with it !
Thanks in advance for your answer.

When first built a system to trigger top of the line drum software (BFD) about 12 years ago I built a top of the line PC tower with great specs. Problem was that windows limited RAM to programs and the software is super resource hungry with massive files for realism. I could never get it to work right. Constantly fucking around with windows settings and trying to do "this and that" to get it to allocate etc etc...
Finally I just said fuck it, and bought a Mac Pro. Worked like a charm. Very minimal messing around with even standard settings. Ran the software perfectly with no drop outs or clicks or glitches.
Fast forward to 2021 and my 2009 Mac Pro getting long in the tooth but discovered a whole world of Mac Pro upgrader people who've kept it going. Upgraded the CPU to the max, put in 96GB of RAM, NVMe SSD drives, and with some tweaking it's possible to run the news Mac OS. For under 1000 dollars in upgrades I've bought myself at least another 5 years (I can survive on an older OS and DAW) and probably slightly more than that. I'm up to date on the newest version of Logic, which I love and don't really want to use anything else because it has so many built in good quality VST's.
From what I understand watching some videos from other audio production people, windows STILL to this day requires more setup, tweeking and general fucking around than Mac OS. I'm sure it's possible to have PC run far better than what I experienced back then but at this point I'm just not interested.
I don't hate PC. I just tried it and it didn't work very well. I tried a Mac and it worked great. I still use PC for everyday internet stuff but as I said....I'll stick with mac for the music thing cause it really does "just work". And the old Mac Pro is proof you can keep a mac going for a long long time. Might not be the best option for everyone but it works for me.

If things have been different I would have bought a 24 in touch screen all in one during the holidays and I was just going to use that for the vcv rack. 20 years ago the hate was extreme. Like you're just running an audio program you're not running video. I mean if I can find a good deal in an old refurbished laptop they really just has a processor from the last decade or so I mean as a single unit it could run any program very well. I am personally I like all the new gear that they have that is kind of fun to experiment. You can do all kinds of wild stuff with PCS that you'd never be able to afford with a Mac. The funny part is when everybody complained about PCS they were just implying how stupid they are. They just don't know how to run a computer or program I mean it's there is no difference between the setup between a Windows or Mac program so really they were just saying that they were too stupid to be able to run the computer or the program they just kills me. I mean you got to know how to work a computer or a program if not then if you got something that's just conveniently superficially setting up for you to be able to work with if you don't understand what's beneath all that then you just an idiot. And if I had to criticize I know the modern school system I would say that everybody in the world and especially America are retarded. Because churning out students into the real world that really have no concept of how a computer works memory size or nothing. And it's 2022 you think that would just be a prerequisite to your intelligence at this point in history because it's not special rare or exclusive knowledge. It's pretty simple to understand once you understand how to relate everything together.

I don't think many people are PC "haters". I wouldn't try to divide the community. But I will say, you are either lucky you have never had any issues, or exaggerating, or are using a PC in a very specific way. If you are doing anything beyond DAW arranging (such as actually performing instruments, using recent VST instruments), you are likely to run into some latency issues, and much of the VST world has issues with compatibility with hardware, because PC's vary so much in hardware and peripherals. Windows just wasn't designed with visual and audio design in mind. Just to do a lot of other things.
My PC is my main device. I use it for everything, including music, gaming, (really everything else). But I cannot wait to afford a MacBook to add to the mix, as I just want to be able to play the music without noticeable latency, and bloaty software. I want my VST's to feel like they are a hardware synth! And every time I used a Mac for that, I never had to think about potential issues arising. I say BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

Fun video, as always. I use both Mac and PC at home and at work. I think Dr. Mix is unaware that Apple switched processors on the Mac, though - they're no longer Intel-based. Apple's new CPU design is faster, generates less heat, and uses less power than the Intel chips they were using. When you consider performance, you can't really directly compare them any more because the CPU is different. But you can make great music on either platform for sure. My overall impression using both is that you can save time with a Mac or save money with a PC.

I do agree, but I’d say it is restricted to some specific workloads. As a gamer/professional software developer/hobbyist home studio producer, trying to game on a Mac is as a waste of time as developing on windows. As a hobbyist ableton user I’d say experience is more hassle/bug free on a Mac, though. Though my pc is significantly more performant than my M1 MacBook Air, I’d say the Mac is a much more versatile package than any pc/laptop I’ve ever had - from ultrabooks to high performance/gaming laptops.

@@mkabilly Gaming and the Mac don't mix! At least not yet. I run Windows 10 on our gaming tower at home. I'd agree 100% that music software is in general less problematic on the Mac due to Core Audio - on Windows, you've got different drivers for every piece of gear almost. It's fine once you get it set up, but you don't want to surf the web on your Music Studio PC. Get it working and don't mess with it. Ableton is great on both, though, isn't it? I love it. two things mac has that windows needs natively (but can still be achieved with extra software) are internal midi routing and aggregate devices for audio inputs.
If you run windows 10 you have to use somewhat buggy solutions for internal midi and you'll need to wrestle with ASIO4ALL a bit to get aggregated inputs running simultaneously as one set

Name it Bruce... 😁For the rest, I'm first of all an IT professionnal, before being a music enthousiast.
The main issue with the PC is that we often use it for a lot of tasks, and not only music... That can cause sometimes some slowness on the system.
And more over, management of musical interface can become a little bit tricky... Simply because ASIO management is not always universal: eg. Yamaha and Steinberg can't use ASIO4ALL...
But if you stick to an interface and you only use it for music production, it will be perfect for years... ;-)

For video editing, in my opinion, the best way to go is Mac. Rendering on Premiere on PC vs Final cut on Apple: Final cut is cheaper, so you make up some of the price of your Apple. For speed: Apple is just way quicker. Rendering can be twice as fast on Apple. Tested it myself, but I have also seen it on other UA-cam channels. Final cut is something you have to get used to though.
Btw, you could call the new PC Elisa. Don’t know why.

Just kidding, one of these days I'll maybe have one of theses big boxes with cheap RAM in my bassement to run Vienna Ensemble Pro for my orchestral libraries, Power it on, load the librarie, let it turn 24/7 and access it thru your DAW. When you want cheap raw power without dealing every day with a weird OS I think it's a good solution. The best of both worlds, MasOS for working, windows in the bassement.

So what about Ettore (Member of said band, but producer) do a little flip flop and reverse the roles?

I'm totally with you. PC for everything EXCEPT laptop! The Macbook is just worth the extra. Always.
If I may ask a related question (which I've never been able to get a trusted answer for) though, when it comes to using the Mac in a Live environment, does it help the performance to add an audio interface?
I get that I need one for inputs (I don't really need more inputs) and for quality (I do need better sound) but for latency/dropouts? I'm not so sure. That's the only thing that's maybe pushing me away from getting another Macbook Pro and thinking about a Windows laptop.
All the best, and I'd call the PC 'Cristiano' because it looks like it's the GOAT!

Yes, the new M1 chip by apple is fast, but CPU war is in full effect between intel, amd and now apple. Every years progress is equal to the last 10 years. This probably means that amd or intel will make chips equal or faster than apple even though its not optimized to the OS as well, is my guess. And with apple you historically get forgotten for a decade (as a prosumer segment) at their will. I want a modular system that can be upgradable and always run well, thats why I went PC in 2017 (amd)

To me, these kinds of comparisons can be way too "specs" or number heavy. What really matters is what the individual can do with either. Hardware benchmarks aren't really indicative of making good music.

I used to love Apple and their products until they started being the "mini nano pico accessories" company. I understand proprietary technologies and their importance on your final product but i cannot understand spending, as you well said, 4 times the value in a similar setup to which, i then need to buy external expansion bays in order to have more space and/or, in some of the new Mac's, an adapter to connect A to B, then another adapter to connect B to C.
Built my PC from scratch, all parts hand picked and assembled at home, currently with 3.25 TB and 32 GB ram, i can run any plugin/ VST/ Orchestral library without any issues, all for about 2.5k.
Last time i went to the Apple website to make a custom "cheese grater", price went sky rocket and when i finally noticed, i was in Pluto. I mean, let's face it, 500€ for wheels on your desktop...

I don't think we need to revive a debate and division in the community. But I say, try both, see which one makes you want to make music. But know that PC's are not really designed to run music programs LIVE very well. If I had the choice, my studio would be PC (I could even game on it if I wanted to), and my live rig would be Mac (VERY portable and reliable under heavy music strain). And the same goes for phones too.
There is such an unnecessary push and platform to divide people and have them argue over their preferences.
Some VERY heavy downsides of PC are:
-The latency issues with drivers. Good luck finding a driver that Microsoft themselves has created for music purposes.
-Software compatibility issues. Software devs always tend to have issues programming for/supporting Windows.
-Hardware variation is all over the place for PC's and thus makes it difficult for music software devs to keep up.

That new computer looks like a Patrick.
Mac vs. PC is an old discussion, like Amiga vs. PC was before then. I started using computers for games and such many years ago, back in the MS-Dos days. I never saw a good reason to switch to Mac. I couldn't afford an Amiga, so I got an older PC from my parents. As the software library grew I was stuck with my PC. I have been forced to use Apple-branded computers, but they seem to take a dislike to me. I contributed to the Uni newspaper, and first time I touched the Mac that we did the DTP with, the whole thing crashed. So I let the other folks do that. I also managed to crash an iPad the first time I got to try one.
Meanwhile, my computers seems to last. The computer I am using now was a mid-range computer that I bought in 2016. Only thing I done to that is to expand the memory as the 8 GB RAM that it came with tended to not be enough for some of my Reaper projects. So I maxed it to 32 GB. Apart from that it is chugging along splendidly.

An individual producer also needs to produce audio and video content. You don't put an RTX 3070 in your mac. Therefore, a PC is versatile for this activity and for a lower cost update. The musician has a smaller mentality, he only thinks about audio, he forgets that nowadays listeners want audio and video.
