  • Here is a quick video to answer a question I have been asked on more than one occasion: when do you use 1 shuttle, a shuttle and ball, or 2 shuttles?
I am adding this video to the "Tatting for Beginners" playlist.

I was trying to keep things simple but Leu commented and is right that you could use a self-closing mock ring instead of a thrown ring and still use one shuttle attached to a ball (which is what I demonstrated in this video: ua-cam.com/video/dFwWly9DdG8/v-deo.html). To make a generalisation and to keep things simple though, rings and plain chains can be made with shuttle and ball and anything more complex will usually require two shuttles.

I was just coming to ask something related - when to prefer a thrown ring, and when to prefer a SCMR. It sounds like SCMRs are to be preferred when it's not feasible to wind a second shuttle/bobbin, and/or if I would prefer all my core thread to come off my shuttle. (Right now I'm converting a needle-tatting pattern to shuttle-tatting, and it's easier to follow the instructions and to estimate how much thread to wind if all my rings are SCMRs, and all the core thread comes from the shuttle--the "tail thread" in needle-tatting.)
Someone else mentions split rings and I have to admit I have been avoiding them entirely. I guess I'll have to face them eventually, but not for the patterns I'm working just now...

Oh! But thrown rings are probably to be preferred if you want to be able to tighten the whole chain together, despite the elements coming off of it, for a more consistent result. Huh. That would certainly fix a situation I just found myself in, where the two halves of the chain on either side of the ring are coming out uneven from each other.

Hmm, I would add, that you also need two shuttles if you have split rings somewhere in your work. Also the floating rings off the chain can be replaced with mock rings (so you would need only one shuttle and ball), altough, it doesn’t look as nice :)

Yes, good point, maybe I should just add that you need two shuttles for anything more complex than simple rings and chains which is what I thought I said at some point but perhaps it's not clear enough and sadly it's very difficult to make any changes to a video once it's uploaded. And yes about mock rings too of course but I was talking about rings off the chain so was trying to keep things simple.

I really enjoy your tutorials! They're almost like sitting down in your living room to tat together. 😊 I'm having a bit of trouble with the cheap plastic shuttle I have though. I've searched for a better one but can't seem to find one in-store. I was wondering if you could suggest a good kind to look for or a website to buy one on.

Hello Corrie, what kind of shuttle is the one you have? I like working with Aeros, they are my favourite kind. They used to be made in England (the original ones had quite a loud ratchet sound) and are no longer manufactured but I believe that Prym now makes them. Do you prefer a post or a bobbin shuttle?

Hello Maria and apologies for the delay in answering your question. The shuttles I use are modified Aeros and I regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/uk/shop/lacossette). They normally come with the long tail but I modify them before I decorate them. :-)
