I think Chris Cornell is my favorite rock star period. I grew up in the 90’s and we listened a lot of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin and classic rock in general. But Chris Cornell is my favorite all around rock star. He does everything so well… he’s a great guitar player, his songs are so melodic and he had success with any band he plays in… but his voice is just pure candy for the ears. So unique and beautiful pitch… the only other voice that could compete with his is Brad (who also had perfect pitch) Nowell from Sublime. He’s not as accomplished musically due to his 1996 death about 3/months after they released their self titled album which killed and pushed them firmly into mainstream and on the radio. The first thing I ever learned on guitar was Sublime “Santeria” solo. It took three weeks to get it down and within 6/months I had it at 90% but I never practiced chords until I started jamming with some guys at work. Took me a week to learn to play power chords while muting the low E string standing. Open chords are so hard… especially the C chord. I still mute strings and my D transition is slow, but my 3/finger G chord is great for a little over year playing.
Great vid; I found myself taking screenshots of your Friedman pedal settings to try on my Friedman amp. When you start the full Soundgarden lessons... PLEASE consider Loud Love from the Louder Than Love album. That song has killer tones and a really cool set of riffs and licks.
this video is amazingly well done! I know you have lessons on some pumpkins tunes but a video in this style on some tunes from gish, SD and Melancholy would be brilliant
You should be a college professor teaching a master class of the tones and songs of Seattle.. always fantastic! Kim Thayil was and still is one of those guitar players that thinks outside boxes and always sounds amazing. Chris as well was such a great filler of notes. Combined they truly was ahead of so many in my eyes. Simplistic but complex. Love that band.
You gem. Rusty Cage sounds the business. Though I thought for a minute you were going to save me from buying a Friedman. Had convinced myself I needed the dirty shirley pedal for BMF and superunknown...
Thanks Steve! I think either pedals would get you there tbh, but I think the Dirty Shirley has a mid knob which is useful. I need to try the Dirty Shirley! Also will have a play with the internal gain pot on the BE-OD.....the tweaking never ends 😀🤘
These are golden, thanks a lot! Just a question about the BE-OD, have you changed anything in the internal trim pot or are you using the stock settings in these?
Question if you don’t mind- I am sure I remember Chris playing Mailman on a Tele, which I could never get my head around- it always sounds too thin to me. Do you reckon you could get that ungodly sound out of a Tele if you use the magical grunge pedal?
That Friedman od is amazing I saved the ultimate pedalboard videos 90s. I'm building it currently with personal tweaks I dont like all the 90s guys do no fuzz needed. My top two is soundgarden pearl jam that's the core of my sound after that I'm a but more all over the place my other favorite era is the 70s
Hang on - there’s some magic going on here too. Your guitar magically changes tuning without any detectable edit in the video. Chris must have had one of those himself.
I love Birth Ritual and that was enough for me. I wouldn’t go over £30 on eBay though, so missed out. If they’d called the pedal Birth Ritual I would probably already have it
Graffiti Foxes haha yup! No idea what the difference is between that and the DOD one but you can defo get them under £30, I think mine was £25 plus p&p so just keep your eye out 😀🤘
Let's Play All well I got the Grunge pedal and it kind of works. I don’t know why it had never occurred to me that for that early stuff all you needed was a cheap pedal with a stupid amount of fizz and treble. I like it with your settings though I’m not sure the knobs on mine actually do anything at all...
Smiling the whole way through watching this. What an amazing band.
Nice! Glad you enjoyed this one mate!
Out in the Soundgarden the tones are growing nicely and the riffs are ripe for picking!
haha a bumper harvest!
Thanks for your fruitful post
@@Funkadelic74 haha you're welcome
I often said that every rock guitarist should study Soundgarden.
C F such a truly great band, working out the riffs always gives me so much more appreciation for their song writing craft
Kopokkkooopokkkkkmkokokkooo
You were often correct, sir.
All of their music is so well written. They really are an amazing rock n’ roll band.
Kim Thayil taught me how to play in the 90’s. Soundgarden were masters of alt tuning
The greatest band.
Overfloater is my favorite SG song…. Along with Tighter and Tighter. And Taree.

Great to hear mate stick with it!

Thanks man but no need for screenshots, just head over to my instagram page if you have such a thing as i post a lot of settings over there :-)
Yes- how to get that amazing intro without an e-bow (is it really just violining?)
32 degrees here and I’m getting goosebumps! Great stuff!
Missing Chris and the band. Gonna get the guitar out later. Thanks.
Hot one isn’t it! Enjoy mate 🤘😀
All those lessons to come...
😍😍😍😍
That is very generous from you teacher Matt.
lapi daris you’re welcome Lapi!
Thumbs up from my side for Down on the Upside, Mate 💪
Thanks man, some great tracks on that album for sure!
Absolutely mesmerising!!! ❤
You’re a blessing to UA-cam and very much appreciated
Cheers mate!
Pure gold. Thanks 🤟🏻🎸
The second Outshined riff gave me shivers...
Rhinosaur sounds a Black Sabbath one 😉
Welcome mate!

Great suggestion!
My ears thoroughly enjoyed that.

You're great at sounding just like the records
Thanks!

Wow, thanks mate! Tbh I wouldn't have minded attending a class like that haha :-)
Well done!
Really looking forward to the lesson. They don't look that complicated
Michael Ball I’ll find out soon enough haha, have some working out to do! 😀🤘
Oh, yes, thank you! Rhinosaur lesson would be sick!
Coming soon! :-)

Holy shit! 99.9% sound like the originals! This video needs more views!
😊🤘
Hearing these (great job!) make me miss Chris, Kim, Ben and Matt that much more.
Thanks mate!
Love it! Still waiting on Fresh Tendrils though 😘
Coming soon!
These are golden, thanks a lot! Just a question about the BE-OD, have you changed anything in the internal trim pot or are you using the stock settings in these?
Cheers! Nah just as it comes 🤘😊

Graffiti Foxes I should think so 🤔 I shall have to check!

i would love to see you get the tone for Black Days 3
already done the acoustic version :-) ua-cam.com/video/ClBeEDcgVOY/v-deo.html
Sounds great man!!!
Thanks amigo!
Yes! So good!
Thanks (again) Betina - glad you enjoyed it!
Soundgarden is the shiznit
Does anyone actually know what amp and settings were used? Sounds very Marshally (jcm 800?) for sure but would like to know specifics!
I believe Chris had a marshall jmp blended with a mesa boogie rectifier solo. Read it somewhere
Hang on - there’s some magic going on here too. Your guitar magically changes tuning without any detectable edit in the video. Chris must have had one of those himself.
haha man i would hate to be a Soundgarden guitar tech....actually that's a lie but yea....so many tunings!
Hi. Where do you set the internal gain switch out of interest?
Spencer Scanlan I haven’t changed the internal gain pot at all so it’s as it comes 😀
@@LetsPlayAll ah ok. Mine came all the way up so until I changed it I couldn't get on with the pedal.
Spencer Scanlan ahh man yea that’s too much gain for anyone to handle haha, mines just set halfway so I think that’s the factory setting
@@LetsPlayAll cheers for checking. I can keep ripping off your settings easily now 😀
@@CuteCraftyThings haha you're welcome mate, such a versatile pedal for this sort of music!
Subscribed!
Ah thanks Yothana! :-)
The Digitech Grunge pedal, for as much as it's trash-talked, is actually a really good sounding pedal.
I agree there’s defo some useable sounds in it! I’m a fan 😀🤘
Awesome! Thanks Matt. There’s a video for Pearl Jam with around 100 songs in the works, right?
Martin Steiger haha you’re welcome Martin! Wow 100 songs....the thought of editing all that makes me feel a little dizzy 😀
*Niiiiiiiice!!!*
Miguel Angel Seláez Aspiazu 🤘😀
The evidence is starting to suggest that I will buy anything you tell me to. I even nearly bought the Grunge Pedal.
Graffiti Foxes hahaha don’t tell anyone but I actually think it has a few tones in it! 😀🤘thanks for the comment though, lots more tone stuff to come!
