Growing up, the Wengen and Kitzbühel races were like christmas morning. Shame Cuche never won it in Wengen but in Kitzbühel he was unbeatable so many times.
Mentally, physically the toughest DH on the tour. Kitz is the F1/of ski racing. Looking out the start-hut is like no other! most quiet place at the start area of all races. Into the mix in a split second. Bormio/Garmisch are a beast also. Dark, Fast and rock hard ice. Great job with the Video Speed King! nailed it!!
Klammer won it over multiple years with a massive variation in technology, Cuche won on the same kit over a short period of time. Klammer was the master skier to me.
Watching the older races, you can see the Streif has been somewhat neutered. It's still the toughest course but it's not nearly as wild and crazy and, yes dangerous, as it was in the 80's.
With skis getting so much faster over the years they had to make the course safer. I’ve read that the Streif even today doesn’t meet minimum FIS standards but it’s grandfathered in because of its history, tradition and popularity.
All modern dh courses look groomed like F1 tracks. Not to take away from the accomplishments of the modern skiers, and the speeds are greater, but the old guard, like Pirmin and Klammer, they are Hard Men!
Only a couple of cuche’s wins were on the full course. A couple were on shortened courses due to weather and I believe one of them was a short, two run sprint race. All four of Franz Klammer’s victories were full course so he’s #1

Any such list that doesn’t include the three triple gold medal winners from a single olympics is a crock, just like super g is a crock, a marketing exercise to sell more advertising. there are only three events needed to determine the comprehensively best skier. Downhill, Slalom and Giant Slalom.
@@jamescrydeman540 I know. But it comes even worse: Toni Sailer doesn´t appear in another list of speedkings about "the ten best skiers of all times". At least in that list he shares the disrespect with Gustavo Thoeni and Marc Girardelli. Ridiculous!

Hmm, still king
No denying Cuche as one of the greats, but Klammer remains the true King of The Streif.
