How to paint over my Nike metallic/ reflecting gray-checks? Is there a product to stop the glare without painting . Just want to stop the shoe from having a constant glare.
No we don't recommend that. The dye is very thin and will oversaturate the fabric causing the excess dye to stain anything it touches not to mention it will cause the material to be very stiff and uncomfortable. The cleanest and safest route is doing Paint and 2-Soft and then heat setting.
The gloss that you see may be from the Satin finisher he added at the end of the project. Adding finisher will provide a little extra protection but will also add a sheen to the look of the paint.
When spraying the sock liner or other soft fabric on sneakers I know I need to add 2 -Soft but do I ever need to add 2-Thin to the mixture since it's going through the airbrush and if so what ratio of all 3..?

Yes you can also use a paintbrush! Just be more careful not to oversaturate one area. 😃
