  • I wanted to build a small Z scale train layout that would be fun for anyone to build during the Christmas season, and to keep up and running thorough out the winter months. This is a simple little weekend project, including the time it takes for the adhesives to dry.
    Rob Kluz from Ztrack Center (www.ztrackcenter.com) supplied us with the the Rokuhan Shorty locomotive and track, as well as a pair of Rokuhan buildings and battery controller. I wanted this to be a fun quick project that would look great and be simple to put together to enjoy during the holidays. Fun Christmas layouts can be as simple as a little loco making it's way around an oval of track. Add some scenery bits and a little time and create your own Christmas layout!
    Here are links to some of the items we used in this project:
    Basswood Rounds

    I bought mine at Michael's Crafts in New York, I purchased the medium sized base which is approximately 7" x 9". These pieces do vary in size as they are natural materials.
    Rokuhan Shorty Line Trains

    Amazon Coin Cell Battery Holders
    amzn.to/2M3AHff
    NOCH snow
    bit.ly/2YZyOpo
    Mod Podge (LOVE this stuff, all variations!)
    amzn.to/2S315tx
    Street Lamps
    For this project scale accuracy on the lamps wasn't all that important, I just wanted lights :) If you build something similar to this and use the coin cell holders, just make sure you use 3VDC LED street lamps. They usually come packaged with resistors but you won't need them when using the 3VDC coin cell battery.

    For some reason this makes me think of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" and the trolley. Great project.

    You gave me some great ideas. I also really like that you included a list of most of the items you used. As an old guy just getting re-started in model trains I am looking for new tools and supplies, my 30-year old stuff doesn't quite work anymore.

      Very glad you enjoyed this! I really do think small projects like this are great to get back into model trains as you say, or for someone brand new to trains just to get started. Thanks!

    Amazing! I have an extra Märklin Z Scale starter set and I think this is a great idea. I will need a larger base perhaps.

      I believe you would need a larger base, even with the smallest Marklin 0-6-0 loco. This board was done so small as I used the smallest radius Rokuhan track produced and it was just a fun challenge. A big reason I love these small (in this case micro!) layouts is you can almost build one for every season or holiday and have a great, portable finished little board running trains.
      You can build these micro layouts on almost any kind of base. A little self promotion here, but this other video we did: ua-cam.com/video/EaPkqmR7mBw/v-deo.html, you can easily hang this one on a wall when you're not working on it or when it's finished as a little wall art! Give it a try, and thanks for watching this video and commenting!

    coin cells work great for raw LEDs, and i love the holder you have come up with! You should post details!
    I'm not a fan of expoying the track or scenery. use white or wood glue and you can soak it if it doesn't do what you want it to.
    I love the Rokuhan buildings! I need more detail.0
    The ebay grade trees look familar :D
    I like that you address the tolerances on the Shorty
    I'm curious, Noch snow, versus Woodland Scenics snow
    Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed it!

      I have lots more videos to make. As it was this one ran longer than I thought it would! On these smaller pieces like this, I do prefer a permanent (as permanent as any adhesive gets anyway) fixing solution as I know the elements won't be moved. Now, the big challenge for me is going with Final Cut Pro over iMovie in the future :)

    Do you add feet to the bottom of the bass wood to keep the layout from setting on the coin cell's.

      Hi. I actually did. I went with the little stick on rubber feet from Home Depot to keep the board at a minimum height. You can see one of these feet at 3:22 of the video. I think I used these as "work" feet, then replaced them with new ones after the scene was finished.

    @Raildig, do you have a recommendation for the ratio of water to Mod Podge that you have found to work best? Thanks.

    • @Raildig
      @Raildig  4 роки тому +1

      I've never actually measured the amounts, I guess around 60/40 or so with the Mod Podge getting the 60%. Just an estimate. I like to get the mix somewhere between the consistency of milk and cream. I also always use warm water and keep stirring as you use it.

      @@DadCooks2 That's great to hear! Just take it nice and slow and get a feel for the project, and on the initial step, just let it have plenty of time to dry. I find a full day is good.

    Hello would you let me know where I can get the street light? Thank you very much

    • @Raildig
      @Raildig  3 роки тому

      Not sure who the actual maker is but you can get these on Amazon, eBay, ALiExpress, etc. Here's one example: www.amazon.com/LYM25-10pcs-Railway-Street-Lights/dp/B07CJHYH1G/. They are a bit large for true Z scale, but at 1.4" they're ok in many instances.
