Hatherley in Byzantine Music, a dissertation submitted to the Univ.of Oxford showed a comparison of Ancient Modes to some Ottoman makams/ modes. Bourgault Ducoudray[Etudes de Musique Ecclesistique Grecque] shows for each Bytantine mode[HXW] the Ancient Mode on which it is based. I wrote this to suggest using those intervals...if the Hymns are clearly in a known mode...
