Hey all, I discovered your videos while watching UA-cam on TV, and I am amazed at how professionally you first analyzed what you need and how you implement it. That's great. The only thing with the Nvidia driver is that you should leave that to the OS and not download it from the website, because after the next kernel change it could get hairy.
I myself have been using Linux exclusively since 2018, but I got stuck with manjaro and also make videos about it on my small German channel, because I am a woman not so well visited. But I will continue to watch your videos. Until then, greetings from Germany

As you said, proton is basically a translation layer. However it's not translating the draw calls and shaders at runtime, that would be extremely slow. It's precalculating all the shaders and draw calls before even launching the game. So it's like talking to a chinese person and having a translator, who will teach the chinese person english, instead of translating the chinese for you.

This series is fun to listen to as someone who's been using Linux to varying degrees for about 10 years now, and has been keeping track of the progress Proton has made in making it a drop-in replacement for Windows for all but the most hyper-specific use cases.
The difference between now and when I first made the commitment is honestly pretty remarkable. I only use Windows in a VM now for a few games that don't work under Proton, or have mods I can't live without that don't work under Proton. Its only other use is compartmentalization, so I can keep a clean game for casual play on Linux and a modded copy of the same game on Windows, like for randomizers and overhauls and whatnot. The number of games I couldn't play on my main system was enough to annoy me 4 years ago, but it's negligible now.
You should give Dark Souls Remastered a try, it's listed as platinum on ProtonDB and works flawlessly for me on EndeavourOS. I would subscribe just to watch a full playthrough hahah. 😜

Before Steam, it was Desura that did unlock Linux gaming. Yes, Valve did a hell of a lot to make Linux a viable gaming platform, but I'd say the before/after effect of Desura was bigger. Before Desura there was basically no gaming. Yes you could ID Software their games running on Linux, but those were basically the only major games. But after Desura started treating Linux equal to Windows... there was suddenly a lot. Still no AAA games, but you could do hours and hours of great gaming with games like Oil Rush, Stunt Rally or Airline Tycoon.
And yes, then came Steam.... with more games than you could ever wish for. Only part of the catalogue was playable on Linux with often less FPS, but it was Steam in full glory and more games became available on Linux than you could ever play. And then came Vulkan and Proton...

It's amazing how much gaming on GNU/Linux has advanced in recent years. We are at a point that many Windows (sic!) games work faster and smoother and more stable on GNU/Linux. And native games work even faster, especially when they are properly made, e.g. grand strategy games from Paradox. I got rid of my last Windows installation about year and a half ago when I bought Steam Deck and saw how well gaming works on GNU/Linux. Anti-cheat is a real problem, it is basically kernel level spyware/keylogger/rootkit and very bad for security and privacy of the system. I wouldn't run games that need it even on Windows.

I installed Linux for the first time in 2007 and used it almost exclusively until around 2016. I began using Windows again because I began Gaming much more frequently. Linux was pretty flawless until sometime in 2010 when new systems were being introduced across Distros which caused many minor issues. Thankfully they seemed to be ironed out by 2011-2012. I started with PCLinux from 2007 to 2010 then went to Slackware till around 2016 after that I went back to PCLinux. I have gamed on Linux in fact one of the things that originally made it so easy to go all in on Linux back in 2007 was that the only MMO that I cared to play at the time had a native Linux client that worked on every Disto I tried it on and worked better than the Windows client. Which shows how easily developers could make games for Linux natively if they wanted to. Steam Deck may be nice but unless you use a very limited number of Distros you have little chance of getting it working correctly.

The reason games don't enable anti cheat on Linux is because they can't. Modern anti cheat are so called kernel level anti cheat, they run in the kernel space and can spy on every process on your system. These types of programs are not available for Linux. Easy anti cheat has an option to allow it to run on Linux but when it does that it doesn't run as kernel level anti cheat so it's less effective. That's why games don't enable anti cheat on Linux. Modern anti cheat is borderline malware with it's spyware.

But under the hood Nobara is just as good as a workstation and development system as Fedora. Heroic, Lutris and others are good launchers for games but Steam rules.

I have wanted for a long while to move to Linux but the various distributions and packets what have you seemed confusing. I.e. flatpacked etc. the Terminal. Yeah, many a times I tried and my first being back on the mid 90s with Suse. (total failure) Back then one had to purchase the floppy disks.
Anyways, my point is that the way you present things and explain them along with examples with the commands makes a difference. I believe once someone gets the basics then building from there will be easier.
    Cheers.

Thank you for taking the time to educate us and opening my eyes to the virtues of Linux. In October 2025, Microsoft will no longer support Windows 10. I have Windows 10 on my aging PC, which means that I need to make a decision about a year from now. I'm highly reluctant to go to Windows 11 and have Microsoft constantly spy on me. I could go with Apple, but I'm not a big fan of them either, with their controlled walled community. So, Linux, which I had never considered before, is becoming more appealing as I look into it.

as a linux enthusiast, just not a preacher but that friend that plants seeds into the heads of people around, i am always looking at statistics for linux mass adoption, because this will bring other software for linux because there is userbase, linux has been stuck for years on the margin of 1%-3% of global desktop system, and recently reached 4,4%, it has massive potential for exponential adoption like an explosion, and i am looking at this recent moves from microsoft to spy everyone, to impose windows 11 update, prohibition of install if doesnt have TPM, recall and so forth, and i'm anxious waiting for them to slip, so people become so pissed off with them that they get Adobed for Affinity software, I am gonna laugh really hard, the only thing current linux users has to do is not being annoying and preach the word, give the paths, tips, recommendations, support for beginners, i am just waiting here.

Gaming wise, my "go to" games are Skyrim and Fallout 4. I can get both to run acceptably on Linux (I'm running Garuda). What I'm having troubles with is getting them both to run in tandem with Nexus/Vortex for mods. I know the community has been after Nexus/Vortex to come up with a Linux version, but they seem hell bent on ignoring these (growing) requests. I've yet to find any "community" port or such to bring it all together. So... my setup is to modify the load order in my bios to 1st load from external usb/ssd, then the laptop ssd, then the laptop hdd. All I do when I want to run Linux is plug in my SanDisk 1TB SSD, and it boots right in to Linux. If I want to run Windows, I just unplug the SSD, reboot, and presto, I'm in Windows. I agree with you , and many, that Windows will (shortly) be a SAAS model. I already hate that I have to upgrade every couple of years so I can keep getting bug/security fixes. But to have to pay a monthly subscription for the privilege of supporting some mega corp that looks after it's investors before looking after it's users is galling. Keep up your amazing work educating people on the REA L possibility of walking away from that Albatross that is Microsoft.

The only reason I have an Separate SSD for windows is for VR. I hope when Linux gains enough of the market share, HP, Meta and other VR companies either make Linux drivers.
I personally hate the idea of spending money on an OS packed with spyware and adware when I can get a better experience on the free alternative.
    Edit: Game recommendations:
    Octopath traveller
    Bioshock infinite
    Enshrouded
    GTA IV
    Spiderman Remastered
    Stray
Also note: A lot of games that are rated silver and gold on ProtonDB has run right out of the box with little to no issues when it comes to my own personal experience.
I would suggest you make a video of some of the more unknown games people have recommended as it could be a huge help for a lot of people :)

Nice video! I'd like to make one correction that bugged me. MacOS doesn't use the Linux kernel, but uses the Mach kernel, which was the kernel for BSD- derived NeXTSTEP,. BSD is a POSIX compliant UNIX. Now, MacOS uses a lot of GNU software under the hood because it's kind of a cheat code for OS development, which is why I think you thought it was Linux-based.
My problem with gaming on Linux is that a lot of anti-cheats don't work with it. Some games, ones I play a lot, don't run at all on Linux. I hope they get this figured out, but they really have little incentive because the percentage of Linux gamers is still very low.

I generally run 'state of the ark' ( sic ) hardware. One early native linux steam game was Portal and it ran great on 10 year old laptops. This was 15 years ago. At the time Steam offered a limited selection of native games but every game I loaded ran smoothly. My experience with Windows on the same hardware was a bit dodgy. At the time I was assuming that the games may have been developed on Linux and then ported to Windows, but you have me curious now.

the reason games run better one linux is because it take less resources to run the os nothing more it would be like if you tweaked windows while running games you can get the same results but in either case its just works on windows with out tweaks like you might have to do to get certain games to run on linux while on windows it just works. most people like taking the path of least resistance which is why until linux gets all the kinks out it wont be growing in time soon.

thank you for this great video!
My findings are very similar to yours too and I found my peace with my setup now finally :D
I'm currently using Nobara to play my DX11 games like Guild Wars 2 and the experience is great. In fact I played the first two days of the new GW2 expansion Janthir Wilds on Windows and then switched to Linux. In the new zones I got a lot of stuttering and jitters on windows (my hardware: R5 3600 + RX 6700XT) and under Linux no stutters at all. The top FPS numbers were a bit higher on Windows, but the 1% lows were much better on Linux.
DX12 games on the other hand run better on windows, and I think that was by design by Microsoft, especially the Ray Tracing DX12 performance on Linux is lacking behind, partially because only a few people are working on VKD3D and such.
Overall, I try to do everything that I can on Linux and only when something doesn't happen I switch to Windows (IoT) for those tasks

Hi, I would love to switch to Linux. I mostly only play ATS and some ETS. Sometime I’ll play some older games like starcraft or sc2, 7 days to die, ark, older games. I Don’t have the money to upgrade my old 1080ti. Gpu prices here Canada are still ridiculous. Looked at getting 3090. Yah $2000+ Canadian or more. 6900xt. $900 to $1000+ Canadian last I check. All RTX 4xxx are scam since they all cut down at primer prices. New AMD 7xxx would be sweat but again. Prices in Canada are still insane.
So gave up. I got ps5 for any newer games. Been happy with it but still enjoy pc now and then.
I am Running x470,2700x,16 GB,GTX 1080ti,Ssd. I have dual boot win7/window 10. Mostly use windows 10 lately since steam isn’t getting updates anymore for win7. I have Logitech G29 wheel, pedals and TH8a Shifter with SKRS add on shifter.
Few years ago I tried ubuntu on my spare ssd. Couldn’t get ATS force feed back work on wheel and ATS didn’t see my shifter or skrs add on shifter. Also couldn’t figure how get mods and paid mods to works. Sure steam work shop ones worked fine. But not my other mods. So gave up. As said have win7 ssd doing nothing, and I’ve been thinking forming that drive and putting Linux on it. It’s 1 Gb ssd. And keep my 240 ssd for windows 10 when games refuse work under linux.
Love vulkan.api and love that steam deck and steam os are changing the rules. Steam os I’ve been dying and waiting for. It’s suppose come to desktop PCs. But it’s been years and we still haven’t hear anything for while.
Valve told devs back 2016? (I think) that they all should use vulkan. Not bloated DX 11/12. Very few devs or studios listen. Steam deck is proof vulkan and Linux are the future to gaming.
Id would gladly switch Linux. Only thing I want for desktop Linux distro is start menu like winxp and able play ATS. With force feed back and mods/shifter and add on shifter working.
Been gaming since intel 8088/86 days. Been building PCs since mid 90’s and ex beta tester, ex moderate (tech help guy) for small indie steam dev team, and I am small server admin. Since ran ark server, 7 days server, and back in my collage days ran BBS. ( dial up modems hah Kinda miss those days lol )
But when come Linux. I’m a noob lol. Been routing for Linux for while. Rest the world runs Linux. World govt, bank, all servers and even ms does NOT trust there own os. They been using Linux for all their cloud, server and AI for years.
Windows 11 is bloatware. Because ms as bullied out/or shutdown all other OS competition in the space. So they have zero reason to be innovative, and thus they have zero competition Other them self. Since they don’t see Mac OS as threat and Linux isn’t there yet. But that is changing thanks Valve and steam deck/vulkan.api and proton.

One suggestion for picking games would be to pick one game that just came out very recently and then pick a very old game that you used to play in your youth. That way you get to see the challenges of how a brand new game launch looks like on Linux and how well old legacy titles work on the platform. Gets a pretty decent width of what to expect from gaming on Linux.
Also, don't let the rating deceive you. Even highly rated games on ProtonDB can fail on you. I've tried multiple times to play Dragon Age Origins on either Steam or from EA's platform, but so far I have had no luck despite it being rated very highly on ProtonDB. Same with Team Fortress 2 that is supposed to have a native version on Linux, which has some system breaking bugs like crashing your screen if you happen to use multiple like I do.
Gaming on Linux is very good, but it isn't always sunshine and rainbows.

Not a gamer other than a few card games. I still stand by my position of Linux Distro Wearyness. Have not used one since 2006.

I have to add some more minor corrections here, and another observation.... firstly Proton is primarily Wine, combined with DXVK, and VKD3D, which are all pre-existing projects some of which had 20 or 25 years of work in them before Valve took the opportunity to package them as Proton. I won't discount the amount of work that Valve put in, and indeed contributed back to those projects.... but it's not very fair to those people who put so much effort into those projects to get them to a position where Valve could do that, certainly I was gaming on Linux using Wine 25 years ago, long before Valve got involved.
Also, I'd like to observe that due to Valve's contribution to the video drivers specifically on the AMD chip in the "Steam Deck", you might actually fine that frame rates are even better when using an AMD GPU, compared to Nvidia... it's not only the CPU that makes a difference.

DXVK and VKD3D-Proton is pretty much Valve though and without those two DX8-12 titles wouldn't run well at all. Wines DX implementations were more bothered about correctness than performance. No idea if they've improved it since haven't used it since about summer 2018......

One of the promises Microsoft2 made was you could play Linux or Android games on win11. What happened to that? If that was possible we should be able to reverse that. I remember WarpOS2 running windows programs but you even had to buy a copy of windows 3.1 to add that to IBM OS2. Why could we not get that compatibility layer the same way now? OS2 had a lot in common with Linux.

Other than some commercial/business software Linux is quite usable for a regular user. The only issue they might have is with gaming or some specialist hobby software. But those areas are improving rapidly. Also, Linux in the form of Chrome OS is popular and Android is a Linux derivative also.

    • @joshlexcelius2573
      @joshlexcelius2573 2 місяці тому

Yeah but people who use Specialist Hobby Software make up 1.6% of Windows Users and if you're a Hobbyist not attached to Corporate Entities that Force the Use of Adobe. Its not that hard to use Alternative Programs. If you're a 3D Artist well the best and Standard Program is Blender and its Linux Native and has built in Texture making tools now.
For Drawing Artist the Standard these Days is Krita, mostly because it runs on Cheap Android Tablets and it to is Linux Native like Blender.
Art wise where Linux is Lacking is Music, Linux just does not have the Noise Cancelation Software Drivers that Mac or Windows has.

Planet Crafter is one I found seems to run better with Linux. On my Win11 machine it got to where approaching my base after scouting about became a stuttering juddering mess. I tried playing with Linux on the same rig and found I didn't have that same issue. Was having trouble with the mod manager for the game in my must have, and went to Win10, where the performance was better.
I have swapped out my nVidia card to AMD (found the wrong install instructions with Fedora so thought - will just make it all AMD - LOL) so will give Linux another shot.
The only game I must run is Fortnite which is just a game me, my brother and his kids can all play while doing chat/catchup since we're opposite sides of the country. But that runs on the Xbox Series X via KB/Mouse quite fine.
The rest of my games have linux natives or just run fine under proton.
I dislike flatpak and snap though. I understand their goal, but the sandboxing impacts usability for me. Steam not liking other drives, browsers never remembering last folder for saving files. etc. 🤣

There were tests done between linux 'gaming' distros and normal distros like Mint, Fedora, etc.. there was no noticable improvement in performance with a gaming distro.
All of your listed games play fine on linux.

it can even say unsupported and run just fine. i play tons of games on the steam deck that are unsupported and they have NO issue whatsoever. forget about those ratings. if you are interested in a game, scroll through the reviews and there's someone telling you how it runs on the steam deck which is how it runs on linux. you can also do a quick google. and if you already have the game, just give it a shot. chances are it will run just fine so i really really dislike those ratings because they are entirely nonsensical

Mac is not linux. Its BSD. :) Gaming for me is the major focus with writing as 2nd, and occasional streaming games. I've found that with steam I can run any game I want so far except for the new Avatar game, and that's because of the Origin launcher. A friend of mine that also moved to linux found a single game they play won't work because of the Vanguard drm. Both of us have seen on the same hardware that fps go way up between windows and linux. I'm using Linux Mint, and they are using Gentoo.

For me Lutris is the best front end, and Wine 9.5 works great for GOGs Fallout 4 GOTY. Even though I have a lot of games on Steam and it works okay, with Fallout 4 and Bethesda's next-gen update, it sucks. Like I said I have a bunch of games on Steam, but I'm burned on most of them.
