  • Our relationships are some of the most important parts of our life, and our happiness is often directly correlated to the strength of those relationships. Dr. Joy Harden Bradford joins the podcast to explore how we can apply lessons from group therapy to build stronger friendships. Dr. Joy and I focus on how we can build the trust necessary for vulnerability, how attachment issues show up in friendships, and the common friend roles you might be putting yourself into without realizing it.

Thank you for such a refreshing and useful perspective on group therapy. It's changed the way I think about it. I now find myself looking for a group of my own.❤

I've done a lot of group work. I found it to be incredibly transformative. The ground rules are critical but I found the vulnerability of the individuals emerged as the safety expanded. It creates a powerful sense of the human condition as a common experience that we can validate in one another. It allows a feeling of deep connection and compassion for others and for oneself

The invalidation for me was in the form of "You shouldnt feel that way"....and "You should be grateful..at least you don’t. .." That really taught me that what i felt was not correct so I just separated from my body and learned to live in my head.

Invalidation is definitely a horrible feeling !! 😑

Can I recommend an interview with Christopher Germer, Phd on self compassion and chronic shame?
He is so pleasant to listen to just like your father, so wise and calm. Thank you!❤

    Excellent meaningful ideas.
All align with growth which requires healthy community and vulnerability. Dr. Joy models both. So insightful in her kindness wisdom and equanimity. ❤

Reading this makes me feel protective of Forrest 's show because it's been so helpful to me and I wanna say maybe it's ok that it's just really good but not totally perfect... but I hope you don't take offense to that. Maybe your intention was to offer helpful feedback

I looked into group and to my shock it was only a little bit less expensive so the therapist makes a fortune and does next to nothing. Hanson please address the price of therapy because it’s totally out of control

Therapy is human labour, and it takes a lot of hours to get educated, lots of education bills. Then there is practice insurance, rent, etc. Its hard work and therapists need therapists to deal with the mental load.
Free therapy advice? Start thinking about others and what they have to go through, get outside yourself.
Therapy should be publicly funded. Billionaires who made their money off of our society need to pay their fair share of taxes to help our society heal.

I absolutely agree therapy needs to be more accessible and affordable. And of higher quality, as there are a lot of therapists who do more harm than good, especially when trauma is involved.
I don't think it is fair or true to say a therapist offering group sessions is doing nothing though. Listening well to one person takes great training, skill and effort. Listening well to multiple people, validating, supporting and guiding them seems like a massive effort. Have you ever tried guiding a group of people where intense feelings were being discussed? It's hard enough just to keep emotionally regulated yourself, let alone actually be helpful to them.

As a general point, the typical recommendation is to set group therapy rates at 1/3 to 1/2 of a provider's individual rate. That could still be completely out of reach for a person, but it does represent a meaningful cost savings.
Affordability and access are huge issues in the world of therapy, and we've talked about them regularly on the show.

If you live in the USA, health, including mental health, is for the rich. Sorry to break it to you. Here in Europe it's also not easy to find therapy for free but it does exist. And at least you can get a free ambulance ride.
