  • At their height, there were 12,000 curry houses in Britain, the vast majority run by Bangladeshi immigrants. Akram Khan's father was one of them, and he expected his son to inherit the family business. But Akram had other ideas: he wanted to dance. Now he's one of the world's leading dancers and choreographers.
This film sees Akram return to the curry houses of his childhood, meeting the chefs who created this culinary institution in the face of hostility and, often, violent racism. Exploring their stories of immigration, this most effortlessly global of artists comes face-to-face with his own past, his family history, and the reasons he became a dancer. All of this is woven into a poetic new piece of dance that tells a universal story “ the immigrant experience in Britain.

I really enjoyed your documentary, it really brought me back to my childhood , living on the estate in Battersea. A lot of sad memories came up for me, with racism, identity issues & strict parents. Over the years, I’ve learned to love my heritage, the food ,culture & the decent, hard working people that made a difference.
I appreciate the struggles many of our people went through. Prayers to all the people who were attacked & killed during that era.
To those ‘folk’ who engaged in the attacks shame on you. These ‘folk’, lay in the sun trying to get tanned!!They devour our food & come back for more. And have the audacity to belittle us , disrespect our being!! Be thankful for a community that enriches the country & contributes towards the economy. Excuse the long comment. Stay blessed .

Stay strong and well! I have a lot of Bangladeshi friends and they are great people, very hardworking, fun and spiritual. They helped paved the way for us later immigrants who wouldn’t even be able to walk down the streets without having our throats s-l-i-t, fighting off these skinheads who still exist, but much less. Much love to you and your family👍

This was a very moving video and I'm so happy it showed up on my news feed. From the historical overview, the emotional retelling of traumatic events and watching Mr. khan's transfixing dancing this is something worth watching. When he said sonethiing about having to serve racist, sometimes violent customer's in his father's curry shop and wondering why his father would keep allowin g those same customers to return : "I would wonder why he would let them in when they came to eat our food but they paid for the food we ate." Wow.

Wow amazing, I have never been to a curry house but I imagine it tasting really great, no shame in making delicious food. The story and history in this doc was sad and great at the same time. Very different from many of the other documentaries on this channel. I think many artists feel the struggle of breaking away from the norm my self including, sometimes I feel shame when I play my music for my family, no one really cares or likes it, but doing what you love is what life is all about

Bangladesh is right next door to India. I don't see any issue with 90% of Indian restaurants run by Bangladeshis. At least to the average person not from either of those countries. Were we supposed to be shocked when he said that? @2:09

He conveniently changed the culinary history. People would think what they have been eating is not Indian but Bangladeshi food.

Two of the biggest issues regarding this situation that we are still facing today:
    1- Racist imperialism
    2- Conservative Patriarchy

This was a beautiful to watch. I've been exploring my own roots as a British-Bangladeshi too, and there's an incredible history there with many joys and pains. I enjoyed this video and listening to everyone's stories. The dance at the end was stunning.

I think it is profound when you made the comment about Michael Jackson and your skin. I was born in 81. So I have experienced the tv with no shades to trying to change it to reflect real life. I am just hoping that the kids born today don't experience that as much when it comes to role models. I hope that now they see people who are the same as them. That is the way it should always have been. Let's all keep teaching our children so no more kids feel that way. Teach celebration of our differences and appreciate them not hate on them. World would be so BORING if we were all the same.

Love this story and is just starting. I love London, it's an international city, I'm ashamed to not enjoy it to the maximum as I'd wish. Also I lived in in India 3 years and even Bangladesh is on the side, it does have that essence.

Heart touching dancing, with such honest, sensitive and vulnerable movements. I really hope, I will one day be able to see a live performance on stage. But, I'll have to take a big box of tissues with. Thank you for persevering; this is healing. Many hugs from Pretoria South Africa. 🌿🎨💚

Thank you my brother and thank you God for the wonderful information on how the Curry Houses were started your people who have come to a strange land with so much racist and killing by the evil nazis raging war on everyone who has colored skin and such. However it was worth it all because in the later time everyone lived there like humans.

I hope the younger generations break free from this very old traditions of their parents. Life is too short to be involved in things that hold you back (religion/tradition). Hope these kids achieve their true dreams.

I remember visiting London in the 1970's as a teenager, my best friend from the states and his family, with his British mom had moved back- the curry places were very "hot", we even knew Brits with curry addictions, red headed Irish-Brits who would turn red and sweat profusely while eating but had to have the fix every day, often several times a day-- there was a period around that time where there was anti-immigrant sentiment when London was quickly becoming international-- but to be fair, most Brits did not take part in that, and the curry houses flourished

    The show should've been called
    Loosing your roots .
Curry houses the culinary experience is amazing
The set dishes born in England not only appeal to the English in such a dull boring country it adds the color and spices needed.
