  • Employees of Shell in Nigeria ordered the vandalization of oil pipelines for their own personal gain. Speaking to Zembla and the Dutch environmentalist organization Milieudefensie, multiple witnesses declared that SPDC, a subsidiary of Shell, caused the oil leaks. According to sources, Shell employees profit from these intentional oil leaks by pocketing money from cleanup budgets. From the investigation conducted by Milieudefensie and verified by Zembla, it appears that Shell’s subsidiary SPDC is aware of these accusations but has done nothing about them. The Dutch embassy had knowledge of these accusations at the time as well, but hadn’t approached the company regarding the matter.
    The greatest oil disaster in the world is unfolding in the Niger Delta. Millions of liters of oil have leaked into the local environment since Shell began oil extraction there in 1958. Large areas have been transformed into a desolate moonscape where land cultivation and fishing are no longer possible. Local residents don’t know how they will continue to support themselves. The oil pollution has harmful consequences for their health as well.
    According to Shell, 95% of the leaks are a result of sabotage. The oil company denies any responsibility for these. The perpetrators of these leaks are said to be local criminals and organized gangs. Now, Shell employees themselves are accused of being a part of a perverse industry of deliberate leakage. Zembla verified all of this and interviewed the sources on camera.

    The Persians got rid of BP in Iran specifically because of this mess. The west wanted to make most of the revenue and make a hand full of already rich people in poor countries even richer while most of the population suffers. Iranians had balls. This is what was going to happen to them.

    This is a great documentary, but the title makes it unnoticeable by the algorithm. Reupload and changing the title into more of a clickbait title will help gain more traction to this documentary, which in turn will increase awareness to this topic.

    It's one thing to commit crimes against humanity and the environment. It's another thing to accuse poorer nations for committing the same crimes and championing yourself as the beacon of justice and humanity. Yes I'm looking at you EU.

    I must be missing something because I really dont understand why this is entirely Shell's problem. Sure, Shell staff is conducting the vandalism but these are locals who they have to work with. What does Shell gain from destroying its own pipes. Don't they lose money when they conduct clean up operations? Why arent the locals complicit in the acts bearing the bigger brunt of the blame, they are the ones destroying their own environment. Shell does have a social responsibility to the locals but they can only do that through the local government and therein lies the problem as far as I am concerned. Trust me you can kick Shell out but the next company will face the exact same problem.

      So if multiple unrelated groups of people explain exactly the same illegitimate practices, your conclusion is that the (groups of) people who got interviewed separately made it up in detail. Alright.
      Could you educate me as how you came to this conclusion? It's not like there is no motivation for shell to do these things.
      A motivation similar to insurance fraud.

    • @dirk-jantoot1029
      @dirk-jantoot1029 3 роки тому

      @@-ANDY. I think it's more straightforward than that and doesn't involve complex strategies. I think most of the farmers and locals are legitimately harmed by all the leaks and aren't making stuff up BUT the main culprits are local opportunists and criminal gangs tapping of oil illegally and selling it at cheap prices on the market. You have an oil pipeline of dozens to hundreds of kilometers and for many people living in poverty the temptation to tap that off and take some oil for themselves is just too great to not use. That then causes leaks and farmers and other locals suffer the most, as well as shell itself due to lost income and bad publicity.
      And it's not reasonable to accuse shell of not having proper security, because you can't realistically protect hundreds of kilometers of oil pipes all at once.
