Special thanks to my Patrons for going through the 20 minute rough cut of this video and giving me the feedback to complete it and release it as a much better video to the public. You guys honestly are amazing and help keep me motivated. Thank you! - Наука та технологія
I hope you guys enjoyed this video and learned about a few new Hot Keys & Shortcuts you didn't know about before. I use these all the time in my daily activities and thought it would be nice to share them since everyone on my Twitter (@barnacules) has been enjoying the #TechTips I've been dropping over the years. If you guys enjoyed the video please consider subscribing and checking out my last video on RTX Voice which is an amazing software package that lets you filter out background noise from your Microphone using AI & Machine Learning.
If you guys have any questions hit me up in the comments below or just Tweet me. I will also be live streaming on Twitch this week if you want to come and hang out and you can find the links to everything I do in the video description. If you're new here I would like to say welcome 👋

shortcuts save sooo much time in windows always love to learn more and save more time to watch more Barnacules
didnt know ctrl f4
keep em coming barn! i miss this content from you! tinkering and coding and tips like this! keep it goin! woo!
Hi jerry keep up the good work. Love the videos
One of my favorites is ctrl + backspace. This will delete an entire word at a time instead of a single character. This is really handy if you type a lot.
I totally missed that one, thank you 🙏
also holding ctrl + arrow keys will move the cursor between entire words, and ctrl + shift + arrow keys will let you highlight text much more efficiently
Actually it doesn't work everywhere. For example while renaming files. Windows explorer inserts some rectangle character that represents this combo. I think I've seen this somewhere else too, but I can't recall it now. And this CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER thing - it's gonna be my new favourite, thanks for that.
I use that one so much. And ctrl+a then backspace
There is a lot of great shortcuts with Ctrl and Shift. For example if you want to select a text from beginning of the file to where the cursor is just press Ctrl+Shift+Home. This also works with End, Page Up, Page Down, Up arrow, Down arrow. Pretty useful when working with documents, code or consoles.
Ctrl+Shift+T is one of the best, it's the undo close tab shortcut, super handy.
Mixed with the Close tab...
love this one too, saved my bacon more that once, It even works in Incognito mode.
didn't know this, but awesome! Beats going into history and manually opening it.
Ctrl+W to close a tab is way easier to hit than Ctrl+F4.
The fact it works in incognito is a little disturbing 😎
4:20 *WIN+L* “Yeah mom. Just love looking at my lock screen. That’s what you walked in on me doing.
That's why I windows D
That's what you have WIN+Ctrl+Left/Right arrow for.
@@RandomloserDK yeah i love looking at my desktop
next time you barge in on your friend's room, kick down the door and scream WIN D!
Guaranteed panic attack
@@computethis7128 but does it pull your pants up as well?
I use CTRL + W all the time to close tabs in my browser of choice, or a MMB press even more so instead of CTRL + F4.
CTRL + F4 works across all multiple document interfaces in any program which is what I like. Browsers always act a little different though, notice how they use F11 for full screen while everything else standardizes on ALT-ENTER. It's strange 🤔
@@Barnacules They do different things. Alt + f4 is closing a program. Ctrl + W is closing a tab within focused program.
Ctrl+ W is not just browsers, it also works in VScode, MSoffice / LibreOffice, Krita, MS terminal, inkscape, most adobe products (IIRC).
Also as a continuation to this video perhaps it'd be interesting to discuss how to rebind / macro keys?
Example: Alt + f4 is the OG way of doin things for sure. But unless you're using a compact form factor keyboard it's not really accessible with only 1 hand. What if you rebind it to Alt + ~ 😁
@@marble_wraith Jerry was talking about Ctrl+F4 (close tab), not Alt+F4 (close window).
Anyway, Ctrl+W often closes a tab, but not always, whereas Ctrl+F4 usually works in either case. For example, Ctrl+W does not close a tab in Visual Studio (proper) or IntelliJ IDE, but Ctrl+F4 does.
I've used CTRL+W for a long time to close tabs, but it doesn't work in SQL Enterprise Manager or whatever that's called these days. Going to give the CTRL+F4 a try when I'm working tomorrow, I'm excited 🤓
@@marble_wraith Thumb on alt, middle finger f4, not too bothered about taking my hand away from the home keys to do that as I'm closing the program anyway.
What the two previous posters were referring to is Ctrl+F4, not Alt, which is generally the same function as Ctrl+W, Ctrl+F4 makes more sense for me as I see it as Alt+Tab -> Ctrl+Tab, Alt+F4 -> Ctrl+F4
I hate typing on glass! LOL Love ya buddy. Hope you and the family are doing well.
MetalJesusRocks it’s been a roller coaster but as you can see I’m dusting things off and getting back at it 🤔
Very useful and informative!
Thanks 🙏
I'd definitely like to see a part 2. Great video!
Control, Shift, T is a good one for re opening closed tabs. but your videos recently have been really great, the RTX voice one helped tons you have no clue!!
SUPERB video … this is invaluable information. Thanks Jerry :D
Glad to see a new video! I never am a person to watch live streams but I have been really enjoying your techtalks every Saturday!
This is the type of content I missed from you. Glad it's back 👍😁.
Keep up the amazing work my friend.

Question: Will you ever start up the Codegasm series, and is Java on the list of languages to cover?
Hope you're doing well, look forward to the next video.
Stay safe man.
Gareth Fuller when I bring it back I plan to stick to managed languages but probably not Java since it’s too close to C#. But maybe some Python since I’ve wanted to learn it.
Java is C# but worse xD
....which happens when almost all modern language features are an afterthought 💓
+ automated getters and settlers, operator overload, extension method etc. All usually not possible in Java.
+ reflection on Java suuuuuucks 😂
@@Subbestionix From memory, C# was created after/in response to Java. If that is the case, then the developers of C# had the opportunity to look at something similar to their end goal, learn from their mistakes and implement newer things. Moreover, it's hard to get things perfect on the first go, not to mention perfectly anticipate and plan for the future...
Each has their purpose, still don't quite get why people have an abiding dislike of Java, but to each their own I suppose.
Have a nice day!

Thanks Jerry i really enjoyed that video. Always looking to speed up my productivity!
I'm one of the person that didnt know that ctrl+z, thank you!
No way, are you being totally serious? Because if so you just made my day and justified all the hours I put into this video with a single comment 🙏
@@Barnacules I didn't know about it either. I've used UNDO in some programs if it is available, but it isn't always available. I'll have to give it a try. That will help me out. Thanks. Also, I didn't know about a bunch of these. I'm going to have to watch this a few times for it all the sync in. There are several things in there I think I will like and use.
There is also Ctrl+Y. Which is a short key for redo after you do Ctrl+Z (undo).
Ctrl+Y is the redo button, in case you didn't know. Very helpful if you did more Ctrl+Z than necessary (or comparing the two).
@@CheapBastard1988 control shift z is also sometimes redo
Thanks for the shortcut tips! Very useful. I actually use the virtual desktops all the time. I find them a great organization technique.
More people should use it.
@@Barnacules Before I saw this video, I only remember seeing virtual desktops while using linux distros.
It’s not a feature a lot of people know about since it was generally only accessible though external tools using the API in many windows versions. But now they allow access to it with hot keys and task switcher 👍🏻
Thanks for the video Barney. Good to see you back at it. Love your videos !
Happy to see more vids on UA-cam! Was always sad because I could barely ever catch your live vids on twitch due to work hours.

😁😁😁😁😁
Funny that you shortend the name to just that, 'cuse "barn" in Norwegian means "kids" or "children"!
Can i recommended putting a list of the shortcuts mentioned and a small desc. Of what they do in the video description.
This.
Many years ago I made a list of many controls (How to CTRL your computer) but I lost it...
Excellent video Jerry, been busy with other stuff but glad to see you back to health again!
Dude I've been really enjoying your videos! thanks for posting more! YAY! this rocks
Very useful to me: Create a new folder in Windows 7, 8 and 10 ➡️ Ctrl+Shift+N
That's also a usefull shortcut for chrome
Ctrl+N is also New file in most programs, or a new instance as well. Ctrl+Shift+N opens incognito mode in Chrome lol
Starting with Windows 8, you can switch between viewing modes with Ctrl+Tab+1 to 7.
Indeed - and F2 with a file or folder highlighted to rename. In fact lots of the F buttons do things in Windows Explorer :).
10:42 Expression you know what mean that helpful.. 😂😂
OMG! UA-cam notification for you finally came through. Very helpful tips as usual. Keep it up!
Hope you're doing better today. Glad to see the video. There were some shortcuts i did not know about. You improve my knowledge 1 video at a time!
Jerry, Can you do a followup video on how to disable the spying in Windows 10. I know a lot has changed and some of those settings you talked about have been automatically enabled again...
This, so much has changed
Yes please do this Jerry
When you knew about Virtual Desktops and like 80% of the other shortcuts bit you didn't know about one of the most important! Ctrl+Z 🤦♂️
True
How does one use a computer and never use alt z? What do you usually do if you make a mistake?
@@computethis7128 I just clicked the undo button when I was on a Microsoft Office application or well the dreaded retype everything. Luckily I never had to use this type of feature outside Microsoft Office very often. (Usually happens when I write essays).
@@BakaVacaa I'm so used to the shortcut that I completely forgot there is an undo button at the top of office applications 🤣
@@computethis7128 and now so will I now that I know this WONDERFUL SHORTCUT! Lol
Love your videos Barnacules, keep em coming.
I'd love to see more of these, and plus it makes me happy seeing you in my UA-cam feed again.
Sweet i dont have to do Win+R for snippingtool anymore. Didnt even know about the shortcut
Edit: The emojis in characters is called emoticons if i am not wrong
Edit2: I think you should’ve mentioned how using the run dialogue may need you to find out the specific program name like for PowerPoint it is powerpnt and for Word it is winword m
If I'm looking for a specific prog I just hit the windows key the type the prog name. I rarely use the run widow's unless for "regedit"
Phin86 the emojis in characters is called kaomoji. It’s what the option is called as well. kaomoji are Japanese emoticons.
How is no one freaking out about windows + v? I'm been wanting this since windows XP even trying 3rd party programs that were junk. WHAAAA!
It's been around for a couple years now
I Loved learning all these quick shortcuts! Thank you so very much! This the second time I have watched one of your videos. I was so impressed that I have subscribed.
I work as a Network Admin, and I never knew there was a keyboard shortcut for admin prompts. At work and home I have separate admin accounts for security and this will honestly make working with Windows SO much easier.
Just commenting to enter the giveaway to win 10 shortcuts. Hope I get good ones!
It has come to my attention that "win" means "Windows," not "win" a giveaway. I'm very disappointed. CLICKBAIT!!!!11!SHIFT+1
Sir I have addressed your concerns and fixed the click bait title so I don’t get sued by the internet police. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’ve entered you into a giveaway to receive 4 pieces of toilet paper 🧻
I was the one person that didn't know about ctrl+z
No you weren't
make it two😂😂 and you see those emojis that i know how to do now
Then I'm going to amp up your knowledge to be even more enlightened. CTRL+SHIFT+Z often redo the action as well
... been using Windows since Windows for Workgroups... did not know about CTRL+Z either.
This video was great, I knew quite a few but definitely learnt some new ones. Also, the way it was filmed & edited was spot on. Thanks!

"want to open up msft Edge,,"

actually edge now is one of the best "major" browsers .. its based on chromium but doesn't track as much as Chrome .. I'm sure it does tracking but its not as invasive as Google Chrome but still has access to the Chrome extensions. I guess Firefox is good also .. but as of now .. it's a battle between Firefox and Edge .. and Chrome is basically falling out of graces
@@orionstoy "Doesn't track as much as Chrome". That's like saying Syphilis isn't that bad compared to Aids. It's still something you don't want period.
@@CheapBastard1988 Rather, it's more accurate to compare to getting punched instead of having a hammer swung at your face. Definitely want to avoid both scenarios (which is why I use FF) but if I'm doomed to choose one, then the answer would've been obvious.
I have an underpowered detachable windows tablet with 2GB of RAM and believe me, I use the old Edge browser daily and it works really well on such devices, I imagine Microsoft originally designed it to work on their own underpowered devices that couldn't handle Aero effects when developing it when Windows 10 first came out.
It only runs slow on Google services like UA-cam but then I can switch to the Chromium one on the same device without much issue
All the shortcuts you have mentioned are very helpful. Your presentation was hilarious. I knew few of them before. Please bring more videos on shortcuts.
Great to see an old-school Barnacules video! I learnt me some stuff on this one.

Hey man thanks for the video - appreciate it. Used a few different ones already. Funny how there is so much more to windows that I have never explored. Thanks again.
Great Video Baracules - Cheers
5:35 thanks for that one, and yes please make more, i often watch UA-cam on my TV and i use a wireless keyboard with a trackpad, so keyboard shortcuts are a godsend, my most often used one (as you can guess) is Ctrl+W (close tab), i also recently learned of Ctrl+PgDn or Up to move between open tabs and Ctrl+1 to 9 to jump to a tab, i usually have way more than 9 tabs, so in that case Ctrl+9 takes you to the last tab, which is one of the only ways to get to it if you have more tabs open than your screen can handle, so it's super useful.
Very professional and helpful thanks for the hotkeys!
Very helpful video! Thanks for sharing.
1:40, can also be rebound to the print screen key , i use it all the time, didnt know ctrl + F4 1 min in and ive already learned something, good to see you back Jerry!
