The large majority of people who listened to the debate over radio said Nixon mopped the floor with JFK. Televised debates were a newer thing and Nixon refused to wear makeup under the hot stage lights while JFK used it. People who watched the debates thought JFK won, just because Nixon looked pale and sweaty. People thought he looked sickly.
