    Most amazing thing I've ever seen. Thank you! Maybe some day I will make the journey to see this wonder in person.

      I highly recommend it. Standing there in person, It's way bigger than you'd first think. 69m/226ft long with a 1210ton/2,420,000lbs displacement. MASSIVE.

    I’ve got to opportunity to visit this museum. One of the greatest I’ve been. For all crew member on board cruise ships the entrance used to be free. But it’s worth it paying it anyway

    You can really see how much this ship influenced the design of The Flying Dutchman in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Especially the front of it.

    As a retired museum director I have to say this is one of the most marvelous museums I have visited .You don't have to be a ship fan to love it.
    One question, the video shows it going down by the bow. I thought it rolled over due to the height of the hull compared to the width. Not trolling, just want to understand.

      The ship was unstable so they had to put more ballast in it which put it a little lower to the water than they had liked. It was also a little too narrow so when a strong gust came and pushed it over, it allowed water to flood into the lower gunports before they could be closed which resulted in the sinking. The water flowed into the hold and allowed the ship to sink almost upright so that when it hit the bottom of the harbour its masts were sticking out of the water still.

    Where is the miniature Paavo Nurmi sculpture now? The greatest student prank ever. When the ship was up the sea the sculpture was found at the deck. First it was believed 300 year old but then it realized studet prank.

    Great lucky that the ship sank immediately - otherwise we wouldn't have preserved it today.

    those ships were damn expensive to build, King Gustav wouldnt have been happy on that day.The king died in a battle in Germany during the 30 years war.A musket bullet in the back killed him, i believe exhibits of the clothes he wore and a stuffed horse he rode on that day, can also be viewed in museum in Stockholm

      Also we aren’t “wannabe vikings” we literally were actual vikings

    • @TimoLOVT

      The Flying Dutchman is a ship that actually excisted. The dutch made a ship.... but then... something made sure.. everyone left the ship in the open sea. But the Dutch ships stayed sailing for a few more days.. it was called the ghost ship.. thats were pirates of the caribbean took it from. BTW its not vasa

      It was common design of the ships at this era, golden age of piracy. But pirates did not own so massive warships.

    Perfect example of Dutch craftmanship in the 17th century, very close related to the ships build for the king of France, but since Gustav II Adolf kept ordering to arm her to the fullest for the war of Poland she sailed destabilized. If she had reached the open ocean in a storm she would've foundered in no time.

    While I completely appreciate the discovery, recovery, preservation and historical context of Vasa, the irony is not lost on me that we are preserving perhaps one of the worst examples of 17th century ship-building, as the vessel was clearly not seaworthy, even when new from the graving dock.
    Please don't misunderstand. I am grateful for the efforts that went into the recovery and preservation of Vasa, but I hope no-one thinks of building a "sailing replica" of her failed design.
    If they do, I urge them to buy a great deal of lead for the keel..........................

    • @ulmo5536
      @ulmo5536 7 років тому +1

      Mike Brown no in that case they should build the hms Kronan or hms Mars, 2 greater ships

    • @flawmore
      @flawmore 7 років тому +1

      They even knew this back then. The engineers said it wasn't stable, but the king went against their recommendations and sent it anyway. This is also why no one was punished as a result of the ship sinking. Investigations were made, and the king couldn't really be punished, could he?

    • @ulmo5536
      @ulmo5536 7 років тому

      flawmore Yes, this failiure is represented by the king not the country

    • @Mrsuperdestroyer
      @Mrsuperdestroyer 7 років тому +1

      A bit late here but I would not call it a bad design. The design was good but the king forced them to add another row of cannons without adjusting anything else of the ship. Which obviously made it really unstable because of how narrow it was and the lack of weight. So in some sort of way it is the perfect example of 17th century ship-building, it was massive, went all out on firepower and a a king with megalomania interfering. The sister ships worked a lot better and the ship Mars was a beast.

    • @erikc1775
      @erikc1775 7 років тому +1

      What they could do is make a replica of the original design. As you might know it was meant to be and was built as a ship with one row of canons and then the King demanded a 2nd deck after the work began. IF someone could get the funds it would be fun if we could make the Vasa as it was first designed since that was a far better ship that would be possible to sail today without sinking. It would be really nice to know what the original design without the Kings stupid pride and need to show of would have been capable of.

    I was there last Thursday and was touched when I saw the remnant of those dead bodies found in the ship. It must be really a hard job to be onboard ship like this in those days. You have to sleep beside your gun at the gun deck. They use firewood to cook food at the lowest deck for everyone. Their only source of light was daylight from the upper deck and lanterns. They only go to war during summer but go home to their families during winter. There was a lot wars going on around that time and the sailors are allowed to sign up with any side that want to fight with. Hard life. Lifespan of ships was meant to be 25years and you cannot sink a ship rather you capture it.
