I don’t know, Mars feels more like just a college project that they thought they could put on the market. I don’t really like looking at it either, it’s kind of dead eyes freak me out, it doesn’t move well, it responds very slowly. I’m glad that they’re trying, but I definitely don’t think this robot should be out on the market. It needs at least another year.
Fair enough! I definitely think they need more work, even Joey said that version 2 of the cat is what he's looking forward to. I personally like the design, but they're definitely hit or miss. But sony kind of has a monopoly on the robot pet market so I'm interested in seeing what marscat could bring to the table!
Well, market demand for robot pets are not that high globally. I'm afraid that more competition will just worsen fundings for this niche projects at least not yet today.
Honestly I think marscat is impressive for what it is. I feel like we need to remember that sony is a very well established company and was one even when the first aibo was released. Proportionally I like marscats design. I think alot of the missgivings about it's looks could be solved just by giving it a different color. The matte white contributes to giving it a very 'flat' look. I'm not financially able to really get into supporting kickstarters but I'm down to follow it and see what it becomes with more time in the oven.
I think Mars is a bit too chunky currently, and it lacks the expressiveness and diversity of emotion that aibo has, however, it is not aibo. I love that there are new robot ideas being tested! I'm really excited to see how it develops.
Idk man. These marscats look and feel a wierd, their movements doesnt feel quite right and the design for it is meh, but again they are prototypes. So i cant wait to see what changes when they do get finished
I think the design is definitely hit or miss. But a lot of people felt the same way when the new aibo came out too. There's very few quadruped robot pets out there, so I'm really interested to see what the final product looks like! They aren't really on the same "level" as aibo for sure, but I do think they're fun and I'd like to see more robots enter the market. Good points though!
Kinda hard to compete with Sony on industrial design and manufacturing :D But a lot can be said for price accessibility and ecosystem. Maybe some folks will make interesting behaviors for these!
@@pixelflow Very true! Elephant robotics is a very small company when compared to a huge corporation like Sony. Marscat is less than half the price of aibo (even though they are on the pricey side) which helps! Not to mention they already have a lot of support on kickstarter so there's definitely interest. I just want them to stay in the market so they can improve in the future! I really want to see what Marscat 2.0 is like!
@@pixelflow i dont expect marscat to be as impressive or as advanced as aibo. I think they're really cool and definitely worth getting but I just think some things could be improved before final release. Personal opinion i suppose.

When MARSCAT lays down and then Tazo lays down 💕💕💕 MARSCAT seems like it will be a wonderful companion bot to aibo, and I'm very excited to see version 2 of MARSCAT!
Wow. I was hoping for a cat-aibo. I’m happy someone took the time and the energy to take this challenge. And the challenge is huge ! I’ll be watching for more development. Good luck to those guys ! 🙏🏻

I want marscat to do well, but if they want the item to be catlike, it needs to have more fluid movements in the back and tail. The torso movement of the new aibo gives it a lot of fluidity. A cat bot definitely needs this and I would love to see one with a "vertebrae" tail like tekno and i cybie had. I think that gets the complex tail movements of cats a lot better. Still very cool you got to see one in NYC though!
I’d have liked them to mention they used OpenCat from Petoi for the OS, which is why the software is ‘easier’ because they didn’t develop the core software. It irks me they don’t ever seem to mention that unless I missed it in the video.
Their movements look like they would cause them some substantial damage over time. Edit: although that would obviously depend on their internal construction.
Considering that Mars is only a prototype, i’d say its generally ok! Of course it could use some more work, but I’d say they’re definitely on the right track. Some things i’d recommend are 1. Making the abdomen a bit more curvy rather than a sort of round blockish shape 2. Add some movement to the face, something about the face being so still kind of ruins the feel for me,, so maybe add rotatable ears and a lower jaw. And 3. Try a more moveable tail! One that can bend, rotate, curl, thrash, etc.. could show emotions and shake to the beat of music! Haha i’d love to see that
I'm with you on waiting to see how they turn out later down the line. I do think it's cool that they're so open about letting people modify and repair them - one of the biggest things that's keeping me from making the commitment to a 1000 is how weird Sony is about repairs/bugs etc.
the design could use some work...the bulky body and movements kind of remind me of those Tekno pets from the 2000s (i owned the cat one actually), very clunky and robotic feeling. I am excited to see where this goes and there's promise here but it could def use some refining. It'd be cool if they added joints to the tail and made the ears able to move, if you watch a cat and how they move and communicate they mainly move their ears and tails (especially the tails).
also I think the sounds could benefit from being more electronic, similar to the ers311 software that you usually have on matcha (can't remember what it's called). because it honestly just reminds me of my zoomer kitty who's sound affects bother me lol
Well, I think it is pretty great. And being an open-source project makes everything much better. Two thumbs up!!!! P.S.: I love this channel. Please, make and upload more videos!!!
Here’s my opinion. On a more negative point, the movements are really clunky and seem like it would wear the bot out. It’s very much trying to be like Aibo and the overall design is uncomfortable to look at. On a positive point, you can tell there’s some passion put into this project, but that’s all it is. A project- I wouldnt put it on market
When the joint looks that open i wonder whether its a good thing, things would easily enter inbetween, whether solid or liquid, tho upsidemaybe its easier to clean and maintenance when its so open? Didnt expect the creator to not already know the ins and out of their competition, I mean when you think robot pet, Aibo gonna be the first one that come up in anyone's mind. Edit: ah yeah so its gonna be codeable with python, and the project are mostly comprised of the hardware for a robot programming, the case is still in development. This, or obably are only worth it if its like 1/6 of the price of aibo.
Good point! Aibos have very minimal openings and still have lots of trouble if dust gets between those gaps, I wonder if marscat will run into that same problem. The case seems to interfere with movement right now which is why things are so open, but I'm not sure what will be changed in the final design. Joey did have some knowledge on aibo, but he'd never seen one in person before. I do think they need to do some more research and alterations before releasing the final cat, but we'll see what happens!
In my opinion, the only thing that needs to be adjusted is that the legs are a bit slow, actually, you can't replace the wheels so that they don't run too stiff but it's good. I like the design.

The Cheap Nerd in me wants one of these, just to have. Feels like this is what happens when scientists create something and try and sell it , without researching the target. Its got decent replay value bcuz its based on Raspberry i believe. That gives it some comparable value compared to the Aibos. Sony will abandon its devices at a whim and leave its owners out at sea. If this company decides to tank, owners of this cat can still resort to nerdy tinkering with the programming. Of course the Sony stuff just fits close to what real people want. The current Aibo looked huge during unboxings compared to the earlier Aibo Ers-210, and Ers-7. However, Marscat makes Aibo -1000 look small. Definitely not "cute" in todays standards. They shouldve definitely hired a NON scientist to design the body. If it was slightly smaller (Aibo ers210 at least) and you could change the ears and stuff, basically make it at least very physically appealing, it would be much easier to forgive its shortcomings
I don’t know, Mars feels more like just a college project that they thought they could put on the market.
