Give the guy a break. He's first generation and trying to bring value back to farms and farmers. None of us are perfect. But he's doing something most of us city folk are afraid to even try.
Real farmers dont take from their land. They give back. Nothing wrong with buying someone elses seed bank. Lot cheaper then buying all the equipment. Just my opinion
Real farmers make sure their animals are taken care of, which is why he is buying bails. His farm was depleted when he bought it. He’s bringing in a seed bank and nutrients to rebuild. This is the responsible thing to do.
Real farmers aren’t jackwads, either.
I'd love to hear more about how he is managing the hay without chemicals. I feel like too many farmers go the easy route and I'd really like to see how someone is doing it naturally.

In central texas 5’x5.5’ bales of cow hay are going for around $85 and up. $37/bale is really a good price even though those look to be a lot smaller bales.
I paid 32 a bale. Northern Alabama.
That's because a bunch of these folks don't want to make any money.

We paid $160 for a large Bermuda round bales last year. This year, same people asking $180. We ended up finding bales for $120. North Texas on the Oklahoma border.

This has been a long week here in SW Pennsylvania. Finished first cutting hay ourselves. The driest 1st cutting in years. 115 round bales 4x5's. Now we are praying for some rain, it has been very dry. Stay hydrated

Really small bales at 37 a pop. Bale weight goes up exponentially with increase in diameter. 5' od bale is considerably heavier than a 4' od bale. Way back when I was rolling coastal bermuda hay I used a Vermeer round baler making 6' OD bales. Weighed on average 1500 pounds per. Either sold or for my cattle I rolled them tight.

Great video but I heard you say you were trying to be quick unloading, here in Australia the tractor has 2 tines in the position where a Fork lift usually goes and you pick up 2 round bales at the same time by inserting tines low so as you lift the bales they roll towards each other, then you can halve the time it takes to move them individually and if your tractor has 4 tines on the rear you could reverse into 2 bales that are on the ground lift the hoist and tractor could then move 4 at once, keep up the good videos regards Simon

Up here south of Tulsa a hey cutter gave me a round bale from a couple 3 years so I could compost it. When he picked it it was flat bottom from sitting so long I wish I would have took a pic now because there was @least100 worms the sixe of a pencil and twice as long. I got as many as I could real fast for my compost pile. I’m thinking now go and catch him not busy and turn over a few

ouch....why on earth would you buy hay from a feed store?
Because I'm in Pinellas County, FL. The hay gets here via rail, and the feed store is right next to the tracks. We're an 'equestrian community', but I'm sure the horse farms buy theirs in bulk. I only go through a bale every 6 months, give or take- for the coop & around plants.. 😁
There has been Florida horse farms that come up here to indiana and buy alfalfa round bails by the semi loads and haul them back down. Hundreds of bales.

If you think hay is expensive, you ought to ask dairy farms what they pay for alfalfa...especially the vitamin rich first cut.
Dairy farms will be self sustaining in the future, or they may not be. Industrial food seems to have peaked, and worldwide communism is ushering in a new era of starvation. 😮 we better learn to milk our goats! 😊❤

Why don't you use logs to keep the hay off the ground like Greg Judy?
He has explained in another video. Little is lost and what is lost still adds nutrients to the soil.
Stack it to the sky. We are going to be dry this fall. Ohio has been a month without more than a quick shower.
I have watched Greg Judy store his hay bales on top of logs - to keep it off the ground to keep it fresh longer.
Do you recommend doing that?

A farmer I do business with, farm to farm, grew up on his family farm in MN. He said they now store hay end to end instead of side by side. They leave enough room between bale rows so they will shed snow and get some melt in between. They are net wrapped. I haven't done this, I try to get wrapped baleage for my cattle and some for pigs too. I just wanted to pass on some maybe helpful info, farm to farm. Best to ya.
doesn't snow that much here...and the bales are set up for hooking to the unroller...there's a reason why they are placed like this my friend
How do you keep your hay from molding if it isn’t covered?
I don't....ya gotta think about this....building a barn, wrapping the hay up and thinking that a little mold is gonna hurt something is silly. We did the math on how much waste per bale....with 200 bales per year we waste about $3 per bale...however we unroll the hay on the land so nothing is really wasted at all. The cattle will consume some of the hay that's got a little mold on it...and the rest goes to the land. I will say that a net wrap bale does do better than a twine wrapped bale....but we've had no issue what so ever with cattle getting sick from mold....remember mold and fungus as well as yeast is in the air all year long

Nope, keep it elevated on logs and it will keep for up to 2 years.
Does your hey supplier spray his hay fields to control unwanted grasses and weeds?
Wish we could buy it for that price in east Texas. We’re looking at least $50/bale…NOT DELIVERED!!

@@RoundTopRanchWY I remember two thunderstorms a summer. Really looked forward to them. Also sublimation (snow turns to vapor without turning to water) and evaporation are significant due to the lower atmospheric pressure.
I don’t normally question your videos but I’m very familiar with hay. I don’t believe it’s very high quality nor common sized bales for that price. When we do custom jobs we are at least $35 a bale just to round bale it. I get what you are doing and respect it but I’m not sure the actual inputs and outputs are ever being shown.

Does the hay lose nutritional value stored uncovered with no protection from the rain?
from the moment hay is cut it starts losing nutritional value....remember 1000 years ago when roofs were made of thatch...yep...grass roofs....each bale of hay has a thatch roof on it....about 2-3 inches of a 4 ft tall hay bale will be damaged...this hay is rolled out on the land and that damaged part goes back to the land..healing it and growing next years summer grasses

6000 is actually not bad when you consider the cost of all the hay equipment, fuel and maintenance.
When you consider the size and weight $6000 is extremely excessive, I can produce 1500lb net wrap bales for an average input cost of 20$. He’s paying $74 for the same amount of hay and will have high loss by feeding time
@@BooherFarm the size of the bale's have nothing to do with it. It's how much hay you need to get you through the winter. Not to mention reducing your pasture land for hay fields. Tractors , balers, tedders, rakes, mowers, manure spreaders or fertilizer. Do the math

I sell my mixed grass hay for $75.00 4x5 round bale.
I get the impression that the current camera you are using darkens the image and doesn't allow for the full affect of the sunshine and blue skies......
How does your supplier make a living on $37 per bail?
he doesn't make a living baling hay...however things are cheaper here where I live compared to the rest of the country
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer The "input" expenses are still there no matter what part of the country, equipment (tractor, baler, cutter, trailer) costs, parts, twine, fuel, seed and more.
Shifting gears will wear you out. ROFL
for every bale of hay you pick up and place you'd need to shift at least 4-6 times v/s pressing a pedal....but lets do the math...we moved 140 bales 140x4= 560 shifts that's 560 clutch engagements....pedal depressions and strokes of the springs and throw-out bearing....so yeah buddy....shifting 560 times will wear any person out. We aren't talking about a Mustang GT here brother....just common sense...and not sarcasm either my friend
