    I thought "Nearly two hours? this is going to be too slow". It's **marvellous**. All the explanations I needed. It's like sitting with a really good teacher. The single most important video I've ever seen on spoon carving. Thank you Zed, thank you Will. I've spent an entire day making firewood, but now I understand how addictive it is working with the axe. Maybe tomorrow I'll actually manage to make something that won't go in the woodburning stove :-)

    Thanks a lot Zed and Will. Zed, your amazing videos inspired me to get in to Spoon carving. I watched pretty much all the videos you did on spoon carving over the past few weeks. But this one is the one I find best to follow step by step. Today I carved my first spoon today and started the second one. I followed Wills carving step by step and paused after every step to do my own carving. It was great fun and enormously helpful. Thanks guys!! Greetings from Germany

    Great video, as many have already said- one of the best i've seen telling me what I need to know with thorough explanations and reasonings. From wood block through to the carved piece, brill. The only other thing i'd have liked to see you talk about at the end is how to finish it.. how long and what environment it should be left to dry in before oiling and what oils/waxes to/not to use as not many seem to talk about this. Thanks for a great video guys *save*

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  4 роки тому +2

      Sincerely appreciate the kind words and for watching. Regarding drying you simply leave it in a cool spot away from direct heat or sunlight, should dry out within 2-3 days without issues. Regarding oiling / waxing i'll be doing a more detailed video on that in the future as there's lots of options to choose from. Hope that helps my friend ~Peace~

    Blessings to Will and Zed, thank you for sharing this information, your knowledge, your time, and your craft. Will, you make beautiful work, Zed, you make beautiful videos.
    Zed, I know you've slowed down a bit, as of late, but I hope you pick up the ol' axe (camera) again! I left the bushcraft space for a year or two, hoping to store up a fat back catalog of work from my favorite bushcraft vid makers.
    I just devour all y'alls vids, but Zed, your vids, in particular, are always are humorous, informative, really informative in fact, they're SUPER informative, I don't mind the length at all, in fact, that is their strength, that is what I find so useful about your vids. The craftspeople that you feature really have the opportunity to share their techniques due to your long format, and that is superduper awesome!
    Really wish I could get my hands on a Westerman spoon knife, or whatever you call it. I know it'd be too dear for an old, decrepit geezer like me, but watching Will glide through that wood like it was butter is entrancing, really wish I could know that pleasure!
    As always, I've rambled on, my apologies! But blessings to Zed and his crew, you guys are great, great people, great craftspeople, greatly hilarious, greatly informative, and embody such a blast of posivibes, I can't express my gratitude enough.
    Zed, stay productive!
    Damn the imaginary bugs, and don't get that wax, don't trade your future health, future soul, for the immediate ability to travel, work, and pursuit of your ambitions. You must find alternate means of pursuing your ends, as they will predicate that ability upon the taking off the wax. Most of the bushcraft community has been preparing for what we are heading into now, they've all been honing their primitive skills for a reason. We are experiencing that reason now.
    Please give a thought to what exactly, or who, exactly, called you out of the general population (who are slated for total control, sterilization, and at worst, slaughter). Resist at all costs, even at the cost of your lives! It is foolishness to hold on to this terrible life (even as great as it can be, at times, aka finding a beautiful mate, creating a family, having and raising children) at the expense of your eternal life, which is so much more than this vapid, ephemeral, supposedly material world.
    What is the value of the ratio of 6 to infinity? The 6 approaches 0, nothingness, valuelessness, and infinity, well, it approaches the infinite, the greatest value. So, value the infinite as the most precious, and let the minuscule pass away, or at least let the minuscule, this life, retain its appropriate value, as a place and time where we can come to a knowledge of the truth, know the source of that truth, and behave in an appropriate, loving way, even unto our death, or conclusion of this temporary, limited, pause in our greater existence.
    And on and on, I go. Apologies, this stuff is for real, and with eternal consequences!

    This was such a relaxing and informative video, I'm yet to carve my 1st spoon but excited to get my tools soon and give it a go.
    Will makes it look so effortless, I'm sure it takes years of practice to make it look that simple, I'm definitely going to book in for one of wills classes once I've practiced with the tools a little as I drive up the m32 daily. Thank you Zed ✌

    This is wonderful! I would love to try my hand at carving a spoon but I'm terrified of using the axe in that way for the initial part. These spoons were so nice and loved seeing the painted handles. Have not seen that before. Thanks!

    Great informative video. Thanks for the great variety of carvers, I learn something from each.
    I also appreciate you working with each person to post a template of their project. One thing I noticed, and it would be more helpful, is that not everyone puts a side profile. So far I’ve only seen one from Andreea Grad. Since I’m just learning and am not very creative yet, the side profile is extremely helpful. Thank you and keep up the great videos. Im looking forward to seeing your future video on chopping blocks

I have plans in the works to revamp the free templates I provide so stay tuned for an announcement on that :) ~Peace~

    I've watched a lot of videos and carved a lot of spoons but I learned more techniques here. Good axes work especially considering the Gransfor Bruks is a little heavy for spoon work. With regards to having a "wonky" spoon, I don't worry about that. If we wanted a perfect spoon we'd make them on machines. Our carved spoons are individual works of art. Thanks guys and thumbs up.

    Great video! Goes into a lot of detail. Quite educational.
    Q: Can anyone tell me the diameter (roughly) of the piece of wood he starts with?
    Since the wood is closer to the camera, it appears huge in many spoon tutorials.

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  Рік тому

      The original diameter of the wood simply needs to be wider than the widest part of the spoon, which is the bowl i.e. usually between 4cm-5cm ~Peace~
