The truth is that apart from changes in Glee popular music changed a lot too. Glee apart from classics also does "on top" songs. When it was Teenage Dream, Take a bow or Need You Now they performed them to keep show up to date. It's not producers fault that Blurred Lines or The Fox are now on top of the charts. We also can't forget about Cory's/Finn's passing (R.I.P) which for sure affected all cast and crew as well as characters they portay...

New Directions was just performing this song in the hallway and Bree jumped in. :) She is still a major recurring character who was cast for her singing and dancing capabilities, so even though she's not in ND yet, they can still use her vocals where it makes sense; in this case, the whole school was performing Blurred Lines, not just Glee Club. :)

But the point is, Glee used to cover amazing songs, and most of all, songs that really suit the moment or the character's feeling. These kind of songs become rarer and rarer on the show, they just pick a song on the top 10 and cover it, even though it has nothing to do with the show. Take for example "Keep Holding On" (season 1), they sang it because it was adressed to Quinn and her pregnancy, it suited perfectly. Or take "Shake It Out( season 3) that was sung to Coach Beiste when her husband beat her. There are so many more examples of songs that perfectly suited the moment. During season 4 and 5, there are only a few I can think of.
