  • Game Levels with Wikipedia Pages - A Deep Dive
In this video, we take a deep dive into a very curious category on Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit! Let's take a look at every* Video Game Level with its own Wikipedia page! From iconic classics like Sonic's Green Hill Zone, to horror levels like Half-Life 2's Ravenholm, to even niche classics like Deus Ex's Liberty Island.

"Completely unrelated" clip is from Lythero/TopSpintheFuzzy!
"Spy fight" clip is from Doctor Lalve!

Hey all! I was a little worried about this video coming off as me just reading a bunch of Wikipedia articles, but I've come to view it as me consolidating all of the information from the Wikipedia category into an easy to consume format. I hope y'all enjoy!
ALSO IMPORTANT EDITING NOTE: The bit at 0:26 was meant to come off as me saying "Wh-What?" and not "W". I would never call what Wikipedia tells me a "W". I apologize for that slight editing oversight!
UPDATE: A few people have expressed dissatisfaction with the "This section contains..." disclaimers that are in a few sections of this video. Truth be told, they're really only there to justify the big ol' "WARNING" at the beginning of the video, which I mainly included because of one specific section in the middle of the video (you know the one). I definitely agree that they were a bit excessive and unnecessary in places, but I also ultimately don't see the harm in a few silent, easily ignored lines of text. Either way, you have my word that I'll employ them more selectively (if at all) in later videos.
As for the "No Russian" section, the dedicated disclaimer and impartial way I wrote it was actually due to the suggestion of some friends. I really didn't want to make light of or sensationalize the subject of the level, and some friends of mine helped me write the section. Ultimately talking about that level is a lose-lose that's bound to not sit right with someone SOMEWHERE, so I hope y'all enjoy the video regardless.

Come to think of it, 1-1 itself doesn't really get constantly referred to the way Green Hill is, probably because it's a lot more generic as every "overworld" level looks the same as it with different architecture. SMB as a whole gets endless references, of course, but 1-1 itself? It was a multiplayer map in New SMB, a stage in Smash, and is the default level in the Mario Makers, but honestly... that's about it?

What probably actually "killed" adventure games is that with rise of 3D action adventure games, suddenly the biggest advantage of adventure games - great storytelling - pretty much vanished. After all, games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid or Ocarina of Time are all renowned for their storytelling while having mostly action gameplay. And that also resulted in studios that were making adventure games to shift gears - Sierra pivoted to publishing shooters like Half Life, SWAT or Alien versus Predator; while LucasArts pivoted to making almost exclusively Star Wars games. And those were the two biggest players in the genre.

It's also very noteworthy in the history of game translation. The Japanese video game industry was still years away from making foreign markets a serious consideration, and the Opera House was definitely a difficulty spike in terms of effective localization. There wasn't anything else like it in the 16-bit era, and the fact that English language audiences felt affected by the sequence is impressive, especially given the standards of the day. It would be many years before game localizations would be widely expected to translate not just words but emotional and artistic impact.
Ted Woolsey made some questionable choices ("son of a submariner" comes to mind), but I think he deserves equal billing with Uemastu and Kitase for the English language version of the Opera House sequence. There's a reason he's one of the only game translators to have achieved name recognition among fans of the games he worked on.

Hitman 2016 Sapienza and Hokkaido absolutely deserved their own segment they were not standalone releases. Yes, they could have been purchased individually, BUT if you purchase the standard edition of the game they are included.
Sapienza is a stellar escapists level of an idyllic coastal village in Italy with very strong detail throughout an extremely large environment. (reused several times for dlc missions with significant environment retooling)
Hokkaido is the same sort of deal, but with the catch that players are forced to work with doors that only unlock when appropriate disguises are worn.

Great video. This made me fall down a rabbit hole of video game weapons with individual Wikipedia articles (can be found here: "Category:Video game objects"). The application of Wikipedia rules seems super inconsistent on this topic. The M6D Pistol from Halo has an article but the arguably more iconic Energy Sword does not. The various Keyblades central to the story of Kingdom Hearts had an article which no longer exists, but Zelda's Master Sword is allowed to have an article. Maybe to their respective series they are relevant, but the Lancer Assault Rifle from Gears of War nor the Smart Pistol from Titanfall are anywhere near as iconic as Cloud's Buster Sword from FF7, which does not have an article.

I think the infamy of the water temple mostly comes from the fact that everyone has played Ocarina of Time so everyone has gotten stuck on it. Long time Zelda fans would know that there are many other levels in other games just as tedious if not more tedious.
For instance, in A Link to the Past, there's a dungeon made completely of ice that causes you to slip into enemies and cracks all throughout the dungeon, while in Majora's Mask there's another water temple similar to the one in Ocarina of Time, but with a time limit.

I do think boiling down sapienza and hokkaido from hitman as "standalone expansions" doesnt feel right. Sapienza is the second level in the reboot. Hokkaido is the finale of the first reboot-game. There are 3 levels between them that do not have their own wikipedia page that would very much count as "standalone expansion" by the same definition. These 2 are just exceptionally well designed levels and the most iconic and memorable part of the hitman reboot

The Bloody Baron quest in Witcher 3 was some of my favorite storytelling in an rpg. Granted, I have not played a lot of rpgs, and my favorite storytelling game goes to Red Dead Redemption 2, but Blood Baron’s quest was the point that made me see what the hype was when it came to Witcher 3. Absolutely phenomenal game and I’m very glad I got around to completing all of it including the dlcs earlier this year.

why so many disclaimers, you don't need to clarify why half life isnt your fav game man. And unless this video is also targeted to little kids or people who never played videogames the trigger warnings for every bit of violent content when you don't even go into details about them is a bit excessive

The Half-Life one was mainly a joke. I run a TF2 channel (the one I'm commenting with right now) so it was mainly a tongue and cheek thing for the people who know I'm a Valve-head.
As for the other ones, I kind of just like to cover my bases. I think there's only four(?) disclaimers in this video, but I probably did overdo it. I appreciate the feedback!
