  • Northern Mockingbirds. Love them or hate them?
“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”- Harper Lee
The song of the mockingbird is actually a medley of the calls of many other birds, insects, frogs, and even mechanical noises. Each imitation is repeated a couple times before another song starts. A mockingbird may have 30, 40 or even 200 songs in its repertoire. Some lonely males will warble and whine the whole night through when unable to find a mate, much to the dismay of sleeping humans, but it would seem the Northern Mockingbird is a more beloved songbird than it is hated, as it's the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.
