I have responded to calls on the back step of a pumper, the side step of a truck company, the rear step of a heavy rescue squad but never on top of any apparatus. The closest I came was when I was putting a deck gun in operation on an intense fire. I watched the windows pulsating along the whole side of the building and realised we were above to have an explosive flashover. As I was diving off the rear of the engine the glass blew and flames from the inferno shot 60' out from the building within a few feet of where I had been sitting on the engine. Intense. ....

Haha your comment made me laugh. Those two guys waving assisted the truck engineer and stayed with the truck all the time. I was the only crew on top of the truck. My officer was inside the cabin
