Hey, I'm 58 and have been practicing BJJ and Muay Thai for around 1 year and 6 months. What exercises do you suggest for enhancing mobility and strength to avoid injuries?

I would overall agree. But I would add to this and say bench-press is not specifically an important exercise for wrestlers. And I do think core work is more important in some sense. although, bench press is a great exercise and it should be part of an overall strength program for a wrestlers. My college Wrestling coach always said "You cant get hurt! You aren't allowed!" What he was referring to was that injuries are more likely to occur if you aren't prepared. You aren't at the right weight class, you are being stupid and putting yourself in bad positions, you aren't strong enough because you are slacking on your weight lifting program, etc. A lot of coaches definitely overlook the importance of weight lifting, its a great tool to make you a better wrestler and mitigate injury.

@@joshuasettlage you’re not wrong in theory but it’s a bit of an absolute statement and there will always be exceptions to the rule. I tore both my shoulders ( not at same time) that ended up closing out my competition career. When I went in for surgery they had to crack me open when the original plan was to do it with laparoscopic and the surgeon said that he knew I was big and strong but that I was the first person he had ever operated on who had so much muscle mass that it wouldn’t allow his tools to reach even after he put on the longest extensions they had. Now you could say maybe my mobility could’ve used work or I needed more accessory work and that could’ve prevented my injury but I’d need the evidence to back that up besides our speculations ya know, dr said it appeared that it was just from years of compounding abuse that lead to failure. My initial thoughts were the same as yours because I blamed myself for being weak and it ate me up for years even with knowing what the dr said about it because I felt I had betrayed myself or that my body had betrayed me, when in fact things happen especially when you consider I had been a throwing heavy wrestler from the ages of 5-19 it’s easier to understand how that sort of repetitive movements and abuse can compound into a major injury. I love your videos and you’re right that coach is an idiot if he truly believes benching isn’t necessary but I prefer to think he just miss spoke and meant that real heavy consistent benching isn’t necessary for wrestling. Wrestlers should mainly focus on proper technique and do 70-80% for reps to build endurance and stability rather than trying to bench to failure and build a massive chest, the more mass you carry the more oxygen you will need to expend throughout a match so it’s more about covering as many of your bases as you can instead of putting more time in to one area than another. Or at least that’s my opinion but I would love to hear your thoughts and maybe discuss in Seth with you sometime brother, spent last 3-4 years coaching in ga and now I’m back in mo working with high schoolers have more experience with “elite” kids than your average high school kids, we do a lot on the national level and have kids competing for word teams spots and we’re always competing at that similar level of competition so I’m always interested to learn how I can develop my coaching and their training. God bless you and your family brother best wishes

@@TheFightInsideTheFighter thank you so much sharing your story man! You've been through a lot! It's great to hear you're back coaching and your athletes are killing it! And you're right, the coach I was talking to may have been referring to heavy bench work not being ideal for wrestlers. I didn't clarify in the conversation with him. Would be interesting to have a follow up conversation with him and understand more. 😄
Thank you so much for your comment bro!! I'd love to chat more whenever you are out in sacramento, CA!
