- This is fairly typical of Jessica’s anxiety since we got it under better control a couple of years ago. We see this fairly frequently. It used to be a lot worse. Why do we tell Jess stuff ahead of time? It’s tricky to decide when to and when not to. Some factors include her overhearing us (she has incredible hearing) as well as trust issues if we wait too long to tell her things. When we lose trust, her anxiety skyrockets. #anxiety #autism #autistic

Jess is 34-years-old, autistic, and blind. Her favorite topics of conversation include getting a new dog, her friend Keely, her Aunt Sue, and cousin Donna. Jess collects CD’s of children’s music, cards, coloring books, and has a small collection of used up disposable cameras that she refuses to get developed. Favorite health foods include chicken and rice, chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, chicken biscuits, pepperoni pizza, and hash brown potatoes. Jess has naturally curly hair that she would rather not ever comb, brush, or cut.
Jessica’s multiple disabilities stem from brain damage that occurred in-utero, and from hydrocephalus. In addition to autism and blindness, Jess also has minor fine motor and gross motor deficits. Hannah is Jessica's sister, and Marlow is Jessica's paid support staff (and Hannah's best friend.)
The mind is such a powerful thing. It can invent, create, experience, and destroy things with thoughts alone.

I have struggled with anxiety since as long as I can remember (which is super young). I feel for my loved ones- especially my parents- who had to cope with that.
Everything you’re doing, including reasoning, reassuring, distracting and offering coping techniques, is awesome. None of those things permanently changed my thinking when used with me but they did lessen the anxiety, even if just for short periods of time. It all helps.

I got such a giggle out of the way Jess changed the subject so expertly when questioned about her bleeding on her shin. She's such a hoot....and y'all are so beautiful the way you help her manage her anxiety. Sometimes I think I, myself, need someone to tell me to "rock myself" and stop worrying about everything.

Oh Jessica you’re so sweet. That anxiety is exhausting thru the screen, I can only imagine how she feels. (And you all too.) dogs are so smart. I loved seeing Zoey with Jess. Zoey knows Jess’s little sayings and the tone too. “I DO neeeed it Jess!”
You all handle her anxiety so well. This was a great video to see some of the things you do to distract or redirect her. Hopefully when Daryl gets home she can relax a bit. Zoe and her window watching crack me up!

Jess is so compassionate, even if she does worry. Many of us obsess, but we do it in our heads instead of out loud. Bless her heart ❤️
What a great way of putting it. She worries out loud, the way most of us worry in our head. Watching Jessica this past year or so, Has helped me so much to understand a person in my life who has generalized anxiety disorder. My empathy and compassion has grown by learning, from Jessica, that she just can’t help it. Thank you Jessica❤️❤️❤️❤️

Zoe Zoe is the perfect Pooch!! I can't believe how inlove I have fallen with her and her personality!! She is so beautiful!! And sweetness x 100!! Ohhh how I wish Jess would use her more with her anxiety.. Mom you were right, when Jess rocked she didn't pick but as soon as she leaned forward and stopped rocking, you zoomed in on her picking at that bandaid. So funny, she has it under contr Mom. I wouldn’t let her listen to anything about covid everyone is sick of it and it’s causing everyone anxiety. I do know it’s all over the radio and over the speakers in every public place so it’s probably very hard to totally spare her from hearing. I know your doing the best you Can and a fantastic job as well! Love all your videos💞

Why was she not allowing Hannah back in the house? Doesn’t Hannah live there now.
Maybe just the change in plans threw her. Some people can’t cope with change. And maybe it just added to her anxiety about the dog?

I’m not sure what they’re called exactly but do you ever use what I think is called social stories to help Jessica prepare for events like these?
Not really. Some Jess can’t see pictures or drawings, she can’t ‘visualize’ a story. We can tell here a story, but unless it’s based in reality, she struggles to accept what we’re telling her.
I pick all the time too. Val your a great support for Jess. I wish you were my mother, my mother passed when I was young. Hearing you give Jess good advise like not picking makes me feel good. 🙂

What would happen if you told her the day of the appointment or event instead of a few days earlier? Would she be mad that she was out of the loop? (Which is understandable)
Val explained this in a chat. It creates mistrust and makes things worse. Also Jess overhears things so she knows bits of things.
Waiting too long to tell her cultivates mistrust and possible panic.
I have Extreme anxiety and PTSD and an couple different things and it sucks me I make myself think positive thought's instead of negative and the good things out weight the bad always and it really helps,Jess try that please God bless you all and I know how bad anxiety sux but honey it's just one more bump in the road of life and everything is going to be great!! I felt so bad for Jess in this video. I hate when my anxiety kicks up. It is great she had such supportive people and a pet to help her during that time. I’m sure that was stressful for all of you.

Anxiety is hard, I have severe anxiety, ptsd, autism and ocd. I deal with panic attacks and i am generally anxious, so I feel for Jess and her anxiety. HUGS to you all!💞
