    As a westerner raised by a classicly trained singer, your singing is absolutely wonderful, no creep detected. I absolutely love the throaty pitch and rythmic cadence. I can see you becoming a master of your craft in time and with your dedication! And a deep thanks to your sensei for granting this wonderful and facinating look into the training and production of Noh. I have always delighted in it's performance!

  • @Zakuru12
    @Zakuru12 Рік тому +52

    Whoever said your traditional singing is creepy was very rude. IMO I always imagined that back in the day, singing was more like mimicking the instruments people had at the time. Instruments being made first and singing second. And I definitely see this with Ji-utai sounding more like traditional Japanese instruments. :3

    I am always thrilled to see the Noh videos in the channel. It's very dear to me, since my thesis was about it and back at the time the Japanese Embassy of my country even took my thesis in their library of Educational Department. It was a great honour. And while my thesis subject has been about Noh masks and stage and the comparison to Ancient Greek Tragedy's, the more I watch the Ji-utai part, reminds me of the Greek Orthodox Church chanting soundwise. It's very interesting.

So for a while I've been watching your videos and shorts, mostly with how to use a katana and such, but I do watch other topics you go through. You probably don't read through every single comment considering there's millions of people on the Internet, but I was curious if you could someday make a video talking about my favorite Samurai from the Sengoku era, Tsukahara Bokuden. There's not a lot of videos that talk about him, so I'd like to know more from your words. Of course if you can't get to this comment, I can completely understand. 14:27 During the second fan involvement that symbolized a katana, it felt like the initial fan was shifting to some kind of shield, which surprised me. I was surprised since I felt like not many shields are used in traditional japanese combat and it's more often the sword or the Saya that's used for blocking. In Noh theatre would a practitioner specialise in a particular role/character, or would they be expected to learn to perform several different roles?

    • @edienandy
      @edienandy 4 місяці тому

      In Noh theatre the characters are divided into 2 broad categories, Shite and Waki. Shite is the lead character. Waki is the secondary character. Waki is very often a traveling monk or dignitary of some kind and Shite is often a ghost or spirit that appears to the Waki. Shite characters also include noble ladies and warriors and demons.
      There are 5 Schools of Noh that train Shite actors: Kanze, Hōshō, Konparu, Kongo, and Kita. There are other schools that train Waki actors. Shogo studies the Kongo School, you can tell by the pattern on his practice fan (the green and white one) it has the Kongo cloud pattern on it.
      A Shite actor never portrays a Waki character and the same is true vise versa. To my knowledge, Shite actors don’t specialize in certain roles the way Kabuki actors do. For instance, in Kabuki theatre there is a type of actor known as Onnagata who specializes in female roles but I don’t think there is such a thing in Noh theatre. Instead a Shite actor is expected to be able to portray a wide variety of Shite characters.
