It always gets me when I rewatch these scenes 😭 Ruyi only loved the emperor and was always trying to do good and she was treated so poorly.. I’m glad he did her right in the end.. even if after her death.
Actually she never loved him, she never wanted to be with him. She only got forced to endure him in her life because he flat out lied to her to get her to attend the selection.

I'm hoping even in death he doesn't meet her. He treated her like forgotten trash and got miffed because she told him the truth. His harem was a mess and he really didn't care. He wanted the concubines to care for him but he didn't care for them the same. They were used abd abused and he died lonely. Ruyi still had her servant/friend who was so loyal to her she died along with her. That's a true bestie! The Emperor died without that companionship. He can mope and pine all he wanted. That doesn't put a tear in my rootbeer for him. He let his job go to his head. That's his problem.
Ruyi was the love of his life, and she set her free in death. But he never ever forgot her. Those two locks of hair will be buried with him. He held it even when he passed away of age. And only when they both passed did that bonsai flower start to bloom.

No, the crown prince was Yongyan, the one of Wei Yan Wan, the person she first wrote as successor (and caught by fake sick emperor. The boy was taken and raised by the Empress Dowager.

@@ravenroc1784 they both were. Yongyan, son of Wei, was forcibly taken as she told her son that he should only listen to her. But the one who took the slow acting toxic mushrooms is likely Yongqi of Consort Yu who was partly raised by Ruyi. She wrote a letter to a son (that was shown to Emperor). The letter was sent posthumously, but said she is now “自由自在” or free. She wants the son to be happy and free to do what he wants. (This means she is hoping he will not be emperor)
When the older emperor and white haired empress dowager were sitting watching snow, they mentioned Yongyan (I am certain) but the mother was not fit so they finally fatally poisoned Wei Yen Wan. So actually although it was wrong of Wei to put down her own son when she thought the emperor was very ill (fake sickness), it was still Yongyan who actually became emperor. When the elder emperor retired/abdicated, he was called 父皇 or father emperor, but he can be consulted by his son the new Emperor (until the old emperor passed away).
Even in history (see wikipedia entry of Aisingoro emperors), after Hongli aka Emperor Qianlong, Yongyan succeeded him.
It’s also such BS that the whole reason to why she is stuck here is because he chose her, he wanted her to be his wife so bad that he begged both sides to let Ruyi in, and yet never saw her side of things and only grew more and more suspicious of her cheating when it’s obviously him going to all the brothels and forgetting his duty
