- People said Bruno Fernandes was signed to replace Paul Pogba. Well, that's not entirely correct. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been using Pogba in the double pivot midfield of 4231 formation in 2019/2020 season.
That means Bruno wasn't exactly a Pogba's replacement. Bruno plays in Pereira/Lingard's position. The main purpose of United signed Bruno is to add more creativity in the team.
In additional of Bruno's arrival. Another player who has been like a new signing this season is Fred. Fred has been a complete different player this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer most common formation in 2019/2020 season are 4231 & 352. What's the one thing in common about this two formation in Ole's system? Both of the formation used the double pivot midfield.

This tactical analysis is just so amazing. Honestly, i don't need any midfielder this transfer window. If we can get a winger like Sancho to improve on Daniel James, then we are good to go. I believe in the strike force we have. I would rather make Ighalo's deal permanent rather than spending unnecessarily to injury prone Harry Kane.

That situation is identical to what would happen here
Too attacking especially as there's no real DM in the team apart from Matic. Stopping counterattacks should be a team effort. Pogba in a double pivot will move up when on the attack while Fred or McTominay sits, but on the attack, Pogba has to come back to join the pivot. One person as a DM will not help especially with the attacking options already available.

A player like Matic is the key to playing both Paul and Bruno together successfully. What Matic offers you is a calm head and ability to hold on to the ball for players to position themselves well for a pass. He also offers tactical astuteness, experience and flexibility. For a player who has also played in offensive positions previously in his career, he offers the ability to dictate play from deep. Personally, I feel a fourth ball possessive midfielder would be needed in 4-1-2-1-2 system or a 4-2-2-2 system for both players to fully thrive. Of course better attacking minded wing backs and innovation from the coaching team are clearly needed for these systems or any form of attacking system.
I love your content and your analysis of the double pivot. You also earned a new subscriber. However, the reason Man Utd have succeeded without Pogba is because everybody went about their jobs professionally without exposing the team to any danger. Whilst Pogba may be of help in creative transitions, I fear he may act erratically by holding on to the ball too long and causing fluid attacks to break down. McTominay and Matic aren't liabilities and focus on doing their jobs properly. Can the same be said of Pogba? Only time will tell but I feel only a highly motivated Pogba can make this system work like you described.

In my opinion when they said Bruno is more of a 10 like Scholes was, it’s true we lacked that type of player in our team and I could see it forming in a 4-2-3-1 with Bruno in front of the Two pivots- whether it be Pogba, Fred, or Scotty, it all can work. Now we will have to make an adjustment somewhere if we go with the 3-5-2. Possibly Bruno as a CF and Martial/Rashford as ST.
Really good analysis, but would tweak it a bit. My suggestion is a 4-3-3 with Pogba(on the left just like at Juve) and Bruno(on the right) as two No. 8 and Fred as a 4. For me this will get the best out of the team. I think the most critical element Bruno has brought to the team that wasn't there before is the ability to dictate the tempo of the game and control possession, this is what has truly helped the entire team. We have lacked such element since Scholes and Carrick left and that's why Utd has struggled for so long, we never keep possession of the ball for long spells during a game. This is also why people are highly and unfairly critical of Pogba because they expected him to solve this problem but that has never been the major part of his game, what makes Pogba so good is his ability to affect the game in and around the final third with his skill, vision, passing, shooting and sometimes he can also go on those mazy runs from deep but to dictate the game from the centre of the pitch has never been his selling point. This is where Bruno can step in to fill that role and we can see how he has been compared to Scholes and Veron and the leadership and tactical awareness he has on the pitch. Bruno is versatile so he can definitely be a very good no 10 but for United he will serve the overall team better as a No 8.

Great video but I have to disagree. When you have Pogba and Bruno in the lineup, you don't need Fred purely because there would be an imbalance in the defensive aspect of the team. Fred is not a Defensive midfielder. Matic Bruno and Pogba is the best balanced midfield we can put out but sadly Matic cannot play more than a game a week due to his age. Mctominay is the successor to Matic and can learn from him unless we go and buy an actual DM. Pogba and Mctominay are a good pivot and they work well together as well on the basis of the few games we saw them play . Mctominay is far more defensive minded and more physical than Fred . Mctominay Pogba and Bruno would be the balanced midfield I would go for unless we bring in a DM which seems unlikely at this point in time. Again, Nemanja Matic is the best option over either of them but sadly he can't play too many games due to his age.

Pogba should be allowed to roam just like he did in the first 3 months under Ole. he can create even if he is playing in a pivot but it's just wasting his ability that he could offer further up the pitch with his long shots, height and strength

Honestly I think Pogba is going to leave this summer so my eyes are set on Soumare, N'Didi, Witsel, Anguisa or Laimer who can play DM and they're also quick, good passers, good in headers, amazing tacklers and tall strong physique to be dominant.

The only problem I see with this is that even the same Pogba has said that he dosn't like to play on a double pivot formation. He's a player that loves to play free on the middlefield, he always try to found space by using the ball on his feets and move around the pitch to be part of the game in a way that his teammates can also found him. Yeah, In france he Play in that double pivot with Kante, but only in paper formation, really Deschamps gives him completely freedom to show his natural talent, and that's the best Paul Pogba we've ever seen.
I would rather play with one pivot and two Middfielders, playing with Fred/Matic and a bit more upfront with the freedom to create and control the rythim of the game, I would play Pogba and Bruno as partnership. This system brings the freedom to Pogba and Bruno that Will help us win games.

Fred and pogba is the wrong partnership on the double pivot, we’ll need a matic type of player but more all round, faster, better at long balls tackles and ball recoveries from the number 6 role. Because pogba will be playing more like a box to box allowing Bruno to stay further up the pitch for more goals and chances, so Paul will need someone on the cover and Fred isn’t that solid, the best option right now is matic. How ever my dream man for that job is Partey, he’s got pace to cover up, tackles, holding ability, deep laying playmaker, long balls accurate passer in rough situations, he’s just the man. #mufc

The main problem is, what I thought you would address but didn't, is the lack of discipline in Pogba's game. He can certainly play a deep line role if gets his head into it but more often than not he just takes way too much time on the ball and is very wasteful. These are not good attributes to have for a deep lying playmaker. You missed those points.
You missed the point when I mentioned player can pass the ball to Fred now to rely on him to do what Pogba does if Pogba isn't giving enough space by the opposition players.
You also missed the part when I mentioned how to add the balance. Player like Bissaka can help Pogba to win the ball back if he loses it in the first place. While player like Fred is also has good defensive aspect (I even showed the clip when McTominay lost the ball and Fred won the ball back).

Tell me does that really cover up his lack of discipline? You can't build a solid midfield by having a number six who loses the ball all the time. It's not logical to think that other players will cover up for him all the time. Also you have to remember that in this system pogba is not the only one who likes to create opportunities. Bruno does that too. Which means he will lose the ball more often than not as well. Can we really afford that much creative freedom on the middle of the park?
Now I am not arguing with you about this. I would be as happy as you if it works.I just think its too attacking. Will work in small matches but you need discipline against big teams don't you?

The point of me mentioned how to create the balance is my point directed to people's concern that this is too attacking.
I talked about how both full back & Fred are part of it.
I also mentioned how this season United tends to leave 2-3 players in front of the centre back which should remove your concern about Bruno.
I also mentioned how Ole is very flexible in his formation that he tends to switch to 352 to strengthened his midfield & defense against top opposition.
If Pogba isn't suitable to play in the deep playmaker, France wouldn't win a World Cup with him playing in the role. France was able to create balance to suit him in the role.
And my video basically saying that there are many ways to create the balance. And in my opinion we have the player & the manager's system to suit him in the role.
