Jeff Daniel’s lives a little over an hour from my town in lower Michigan. I met him when his sons played baseball against the school I work at. He’s a very down to earth guy that did not get caught up in the Hollywood drama that is so common
Paquin's debut performance in the film earned her the 1994 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of 11, making her the second-youngest Oscar winner in history, behind Tatum O'Neal.
Thank you for reacting to this thank you to the dudester for recommending... This is my absolute favourite family movie from my childhood. That song always gets me choked up, especially when she's flying on her own. Especially after her dad tells her that her mom is in the geese and flying with her.
10:57 "You live in _Canada._ Doesn't the _government_ pay for their college?" In '96, I don't know. Nowadays, I can tell you that, although it's true that, overall, college education is _cheaper_ in Canada, and otherwise _comparable_ to the US, they still charge tuition. There are 22 countries in the world in which the colleges and universities are tuition free, and discouragingly _few_ of them _English-language_ speaking countries, but Canada is not on the list.
While the real-life Bill Lishman (whom Jeff Daniel's character is inspired by) had a daughter, the movie is based more from his work on imprinting with bird species than his actual parental story (as Lishman was pretty easy going and didn't have the difficult relationship the movie portrays). Lishman even cameos playing Jeff Daniel's character when he picks up Amy on the motorcycle). Bill Lishman passed away in 2017.
24:02 -- Top-of-the-line Ultralight trikes, if a good pilot takes one up in good weather, can fly for 12 hours non-stop -- and that's before the pilot has to look at the fuel gage. 35:18 -- I know -- that's quite the shot. 35:53 -- a stuntman was originally going to do that flying the Easy Riser into the corn field, but Bill Lishman was serving as a pilot double for Jeff Daniels on the shoot and he said, 'I've flown into a corn field hundreds of times -- I'll do it.' And he did.
About 25 years ago I took a vacation with my family to the east coast, and one of the places we went to was Gettysburg. We paid for one of the tours where the tour guide gets in your car and you drive around while he tells you about the place. I had just seen the Gettysburg movie from 1993, so I started asking him a bunch of questions about the filming of it. Of course that movie also starred Jeff Daniels, and pretty much right away our tour guide segues from talking about the Gettysburg movie to talking about this movie, Fly Away Home. Apparently the movie really affected him, because he’s telling us, in tears, how beautiful the story is. He was a really nice guy, but man, the rest of the tour was a bit awkward.
39:48--Lishman "imprinted" a new flock that would follow the airplanes used in the film (although for some of the more technically "difficult" shots, CGI birds were used, particularly the moment when Igor gets hit by the plane)
Thanks so much for reacting to this film. This is definitely one of my favourite movies to watch in the Autumn. I just love all the shots of the geese with the autumnal colours of the trees and landscape. Plus love that song 10 000 miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter. It always surprises me when I remember they use it for the beginning of the film, as I always remember it as the soundtrack for the birds final flight to their new home. I tear up every time at the end however many times I've watched it.
You, Me,& The Movies. Having dipped your toes into this true story maybe it's time to give the film, "The World's Fastest Indian" a gander. Cheers, Chris Perry.
I assumed that a baby goose was called a goosling, it sounded right and I thought I'd heard that before. I wanted to comment about how absolutely adorable it was when they were all running after her with their tiny little wings out, but geeslings definitely did Not sound right, so I looked it up. Apparently the correct name is a gosling or goslings, which rolls off the tongue much better than geeslings lol.
I worked at a wildlife sanctuary years ago. Some of the geese in this movie ended up there. We had many other birds there as well. As an aside, we also had some of the chimps that were in the film Project X, as well as descendants of Ham, Enos, and the other chimps that were used by NASA during the Mercury program.
You're mistaken, Anna Paquin's breakout roll was The Panio, it was 3 years prior. She won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for that roll. Also Sam Heughan's (pronounced Hew-in) first acting job is was on 2001. Read Waypoints; My Scottish Journey. Kinda a autobiography, sorta.
Yeah, I use to watch it all the time as a kid. Did you know that it was originally titled “Flying Wild?” But they changed it to “Fly Away Home” at the last minute
Eggcellent movie and eggcellent reaction! I appreciated that you eventually caught and corrected your Wright Brothers error. As a Dayton, Ohio chick (the birthplace of those brothers), I briefly worked at a local historical park that features the actual 1905 Wright Flyer III, the world’s first practical airplane (unlike the 1903 plane, the 1905 could fly longer than 20 minutes and was safer, more dependable for repeated use, and controllable)… and Orville helped design the building it’s housed in. So, as a bird who’s worked at a place that celebrates the history of powered flight, this movie does hold a special place in my heart and I was glad to see it featured on your channel. P.S. I too love popcorn!😋🍿
Saw this movie as a child at my grand-ma's house :)good memories. BTW :P the only thing that is free is heath care in canada ,we still pay for a prescription and medication ,its just free too see a doctor or even have emergency care but we still pay for the reste and yes we do pay for school, college and university :P.
You brought up mother goose well theres a movie for you two called... Father Goose (1964) Staring Cary Grant in this funny war/comedy movie that has it all... a must-see for every Cary Grant fan and old school film nuts ....an older Grant at very best and still gets the "young" ladies 😉
Mrs, I like Outlander as well, however, Sam Heughan wasn't the Barry Strickland character; it was Holter Graham. I really enjoyed the reaction! 😊 Take care.
Reality. Bill Lishman started this project in 1986 and made the flight in 1993. His wife was Ali e and he had an additional 2 sons. No note about any kids doing the flying.
great movie + reaction! I got a chance to meet Mr. Lishman in the 90's, and the popup-fridge. Nice man. Cool, weird sculptures on the property, and IIRC a part underground house, built into the side of a hill👍
As a childhood SA survivor I remember being so traumatized by that scene where he walks in on her in the shower. It’s the only scene I really remembered from this movie. I haven’t seen it in over 20 years. Very underrated movie though.
It's super interesting how anyone can get stuck in a bathroom like that. I know that the bathroom door can get stuck if you put so much humidity in the bathroom, also if you need help with something the person has to burst down the door to get to you because of the bathroom door being swollen shut. You can see the hole in the door when Amy's father had to break down the bathroom door to get into the room.
ok. hear me out, cause this is weird.. I have never seen any of your videos before, and just now, I suddenly felt the urge to watch a Fly Away Home movie reaction video.. so I typed it into the youtube search bar... and there is only one, this one.... I check when it was posted..... AN HOUR AGO?!?!? I mean... what an odd, and fortunate coincidence LOL! you wouldn't happen to have a voodoo doll the looks like me or something? haha
This movie is very loosely based on a real series of events and differs greatly in many aspects they raised completely different geese for the film. So it is a recreation
Once a man working in a warehouse just below the landing path to larger airport, got "the devil in him". So one day he bought a lot of paint, went to the roof of the warehouse and wrote in large letters, clearly visible to the passangers in the landing aircrafts: "Welcom to _Pleasantville_ !" Do I need to mention that the warehouse was not in _Pleasantville_ ...
If you liked this movie, you should also see "Never Cry Wolf", a(nother) Carroll Ballard directed, wilderness story starring Charles Martin Smith ("American Graffiti") and Brian Dennehy. Leisurely--paced at times, occasionally silly, and less interpersonal stuff, but also beautifully filmed, nicely narrated by Smith, and beautifully scored by Mark Isham, who scored this movie. Smith's best, natural performance.
Interesting how her nose ring came about (which was still a fairly new thing to have in those days)...she originally wore it (a clip-on) on the set as a joke (to freak people out thinking its real) but the director really liked it so (I don't think you include this part) she is gifted it in the movie as a sort of coming-of-age sort of deal.
Thank you for reminding me of the daft joke about an Irish tailor. An Irish tailor needed new irons. (A tailor's iron is called a goose) He writes to the manufacturer "Dear Sirs, I'd like to order two of your fine tailors gooses" He tries again.. "Dear Sirs, I'd like to order two of your fine tailors geese." He make a cup of tea, and thinks... "Dear Sirs, I'd like to order one tailor's goose. P.S, While you're at it, please send me another one"
If you like this movie, second hand lines is a good one too similar to this (just noticed that). I think Mr and Mrs movies watched that one already. No, the government doesn't pay, but we pay a fraction for higher education, my coworkers and I compared and it was around 4:1 US:Canada for university tutition roughly.
27:50 - it's a bad idea to have crippled goose living in the wild (it won't be living long). Igor's life would be much better if they clip his wings and he spends his life with mom. He won't make it in the wild.
I'm glad someone finally discovered this gem
Jeff Daniel’s lives a little over an hour from my town in lower Michigan. I met him when his sons played baseball against the school I work at. He’s a very down to earth guy that did not get caught up in the Hollywood drama that is so common
Yes, he even said specifically in an interview that he doesn’t wanna be a “movie star.” He just wants to be known as a basic actor.
Anna Paquin was already an Oscar winner when she did this movie. She won Best Supporting Actress for her great role in The Piano (1993).
Paquin's debut performance in the film earned her the 1994 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of 11, making her the second-youngest Oscar winner in history, behind Tatum O'Neal.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid
Do you know how rare this movie is, I have been checking for reactions on it. Almost everyone I follow has never heard of it.
Yes, a big thank you to Grandaddy Dudester for picking this ole gem, much appreciated!
That was a fun watchalong with you two.
Thank you for reacting to this thank you to the dudester for recommending... This is my absolute favourite family movie from my childhood. That song always gets me choked up, especially when she's flying on her own. Especially after her dad tells her that her mom is in the geese and flying with her.
My childhood was centered around so many animal human love stories. From born free, flipper, homeward bound and two brothers to this and so on.
10:57 "You live in _Canada._ Doesn't the _government_ pay for their college?"

Bill Lishman passed away in 2017.
This film was filmed about 20 minutes from my hometown, I was there this summer, they still have the props and everything
The song “10,000 miles” by MCC still chokes me up to this day.
SHUT UP, I’M NOT CRYING, YOU ARE.
Yeah it's such a beautiful song.
It makes me think of the song Ave Maria by Aaron Neville from the soundtrack to the 1993 movie Alive.
Yup. It does a number on me too. Especially when I think about it in association with this movie.
When she flies with the Goose in the end it always makes me tear up.
The score at beginning of movie when Jeff Daniels character first flies his little one maner wing is epic as all hell.
Hey, Canadian here. I just invented the internet, since we're a little behind the times in this area. Cool reaction!
Send.
This was one of my favorites when I was younger. This and The Horse Whisperer
i can't believe someone finally react to this movie. i remember when i watched at Disney
Love, when your Daughter comes in^^
Anna Paquin's first movie was The Piano, for which she won an Oscar.
This brings me back! I LOVED this movie as a kid!! I miss my beloved Mother dearly she loved his movie! I'm very glad you enjoyed this gem too!

Oh, the girls will adore this film. I was a cynical 19 year old when it came out and my kid sisters and I loved it.
39:48--Lishman "imprinted" a new flock that would follow the airplanes used in the film (although for some of the more technically "difficult" shots, CGI birds were used, particularly the moment when Igor gets hit by the plane)
I'm glad Mrs. Movies caught herself on the Wright brothers. I wasn't going to call her on it, but it was hurting my soul.
Thanks so much for reacting to this film.

Yes! Agreed.
Great idea
That's a bit of a tenuous link. Apart from being based on real life events they're not even the same genre of film.
What a great transition.
"Who would want to leave this place?"
"It's gorgeous!"
[Hard cut to all the trees being bulldozed]
Yall unlocked a memory! I use to be OBSESSED with this movie!
The singer was Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Anna had already won an Oscar by then.

Gosling.
This was filmed in British Columbia here in Canada. And ohhh yes, we have school!!

Such a beautiful and emotional film 🦆🦆🦆
Yeah, I use to watch it all the time as a kid. Did you know that it was originally titled “Flying Wild?” But they changed it to “Fly Away Home” at the last minute
Was not ready for this today. Then the "Orville brothers" killed me😂. Thanks, have a good one.
Because the studio couldn't insure actor Jeff Daniels for ultra-light flight, Lishman doubled as Tom Alden, the character based on Lishman himself.
I haven't seen this since I was a kid
Same. Been at least 20 years for me.
I call those geese the Canadian Air Force.
Eggcellent movie and eggcellent reaction! I appreciated that you eventually caught and corrected your Wright Brothers error. You know who you are!
Oh my God, i forgot about this movie and how it was always on TV growing up. Wow, thanks guys! ♥️
I watch this movie aired on tv back in 2000. I already forgot everything except when they flew with the geese
I remember seeing this film in theaters when it came out.
I forgot this film existed until you guys started watching it lol Growing up we had it on vhs.

Damn right it is.
True Story u know! It's a really lovely heart warming film, watched it a few times over the years.🙏
Reality. Bill Lishman started this project in 1986 and made the flight in 1993. His wife was Ali e and he had an additional 2 sons. No note about any kids doing the flying.

I got a chance to meet Mr. Lishman in the 90's, and the popup-fridge. Nice man. Cool, weird sculptures on the property, and IIRC a part underground house, built into the side of a hill👍
So Bill Lishman lives in a Hobbit Hole.
Of course you realize the geese were thought to land on the airbase every year. Lol
I watched this once as a little kid, but I remembered it as I saw the title of this video lol.
This is the first movie I ever watched in theaters.
Such a sweet movie! ❤ Glad you chose it.
As a childhood SA survivor I remember being so traumatized by that scene where he walks in on her in the shower. It’s the only scene I really remembered from this movie. I haven’t seen it in over 20 years. Very underrated movie though.

The Orval Bro...
Close Enough Orval and Wilber Wright.
Orval was the eldest bother.
Nvm you got it

I FORGOT THIS MOVIE EXISTED. Holy nostalgia with that movie cover in the thumbnail.
Right! Recently i did a search for another movie called Far From Home that i remembered watching as a kid but didnt know the name of
This was always a childhood favorite ;)
Fun fact: it was originally titled “Flying Wild.” But was changed to “Fly Away Home” at the last minute

So mad I missed this!! I’ve been trying to get a bunch of other channels to watch this! Well done! It’s a great “Father/Daughter” movie.
39:30 😧 whoa

29:02 Well _this_ was a dick move.
Always did like this one...really glad to see you reacting to it. I think it is pretty much Jeff and Anna's best work. IMHO 👍
Anna was good in The Piano.
@@orangewarm1 I completely agree, I just think she showed more range in this one. But there is no question she was excellent in The Piano.💯
They did like 3 more movies together
Jeff Daniels is such an astounding actor. Please watch 2 Days In the Valley.
Yeah, he won 2 Emmys… did you know that?
I liked this movie
Yup love reaching with you tooo😊
Great movie! 🪿
Missed you both. 🤗
Jeff Daniels. Hmmm, Ray Liotta??? Ah, ummm "Something Wild" Yes, I loved that movie.
Have you guys ever watched the Ghosts in the Darkness. Another true story
