    "Where's Gary", John's first words after finishing. Not to know if he beat him or lost to him, but out of genuine concern for a friend. Unbelievably classy. Congrats John!

      Just want to add that in regards to admitting he went down the wrong trail, Gary's loop was counter clockwise so he was supposed to return from the opposite way he did return. He mentions that he dropped down the wrong side of the mountain in the fog.

    Fascinating to see that while John is able to pierce the suffering with humor within two minutes of tapping the gate, his animal brain is slower to accept that he is no longer Out There running from the 60-hour monster. Life on the edge.

    What I took most from this is the humility by both Laz and Robbins. The last thing Laz wants to do is tell a man whos given that much that he fell short. Thats what I love about Ultra Running in general with the exception of a few, its a sport powered by good people and the expectation thatyou have to beat the clock or you didnt do it. Ive been an ultra runner over a decade now and have seen some heartbreakers and no one has ever asked for a handout or forgiveness, you either did it or you didnt.

    This video gives me all the feelings! Seeing these men when they finish, they are really done, they gave everything they had and more and you can tell. Looking at the wives, the tears, the pride, the concern, the love. The friendship, the camaraderie. I have done ultras, but obviously nothing can even compare to Barkley, we put ourselves through a roller coaster of emotions, you push your body to the limit, you get there and then you push some more, you tap to those places you didn’t even know existed inside of you. People ask why the heck do we do it, and I can’t really explain it in a way that those that don’t run long distance can understand, they say we are crazy, and maybe you do have to be a little crazy to do it, but I love all the feelings, before the race, during, and after. I learn about my self and what an amazing machine our bodies can be, I learn how rewarding can be become best friends with a complete stranger, a fellow runner that you might never see again after the race is over. My own feeling of pride and the look of pride in my family’s eyes when I see them at the end erase the pain for as long as I can see them till I cross the finish line.I might say “I’ll never do this shit again”, but next day I might be already looking for my next adventure. Much love to all the ultra runners out there, and to their supportive family or/and friends. Although I am mostly alone out there, I can’t do it alone.

    I kind of understand, but a part of me still thinks it's sad that almost everyone there was recording and trying to get coverage of it instead of respecting how devastating the circumstances were for Gary and giving him privacy.The only people I can give passes to are people like Ginger Runner who was actually there to make a documentary. But looks like there were so many people with their cameras and phones out. Technology is just unfortunate sometimes.

    • @DJItchyBoo
      @DJItchyBoo 7 років тому +15

      Completely disagree. Heartbreak aside this is a spectacle of an event with worldwide interest. It deserves to be documented.

    • @atkinsonej14
      @atkinsonej14 7 років тому +19

      It needs to be documented by everyone standing there?? I don't think so. Seemed like most of the people just cared about getting a shot of Gary on the ground. I don't know... I'm a pretty chill person and don't want to start internet fights or anything, but it bothered me enough to comment. I think people need to first respect the runners, and second, understand that there were multiple media outlets there to professionally document the runners coming in, so it's not really necessary for a bunch of spectators to be swarming Gary with their phones and amateur cameras -- especially considering how intense the moment was. How many angles do we need of Gary finishing the race? Perspective.

    • @blacket3
      @blacket3 7 років тому +4

      Eric Atkinson totally with you on this. I feel like it just ruins the scene. Having one or two designated photographers would be ideal. Everyone standing around with their phones in his face really peeved me off.

    • @DJItchyBoo
      @DJItchyBoo 7 років тому +16

      "Seemed like most of the people just cared about getting a shot of Gary on the ground."
      Oh, comeon dude. You're embellishing things here. Everybody was standing there with cameras out as Gary was running up to the gate. They wanted to document what was possibly the 16th man to finish in over 30 years of this historic race. Everyone was poised with their cameras before he fell to the ground. If this was a video of Gary successfully finishing the race and everyone had their cameras out you wouldn't have said a thing. This is coming from someone who thinks society over uses technology - I've never had a smart phone and would rather experience things first hand than behind the lens of a camera but whether the result is heartbreak or jubilation I can understand why people would want to document it themselves, regardless of any official filming going on. This isn't a meditation center, this is a historic race and I think everyone having their cameras out is justified.

    @2:10 where is he ? The guy in the blue jacket “you beat him” for John it’s not about beating his rival, it’s about him hoping his rival gets in too

  • @tommyboyfitness
    @tommyboyfitness 5 років тому

    The most interesting thing in this clip. Is he asked where was Gary, and the other guy I guess it’s a family member or a crewmember said he’s not in yet you beat him. And that’s not why he was asking when you go through the hell that they went through together Gary became his brother in that suffering, and he was worried about his well-being not whether he came in first. Of course that’s not something a person who is not running the race even if he’s that close to the race as a crew member family member could even know. So, you see John was asking out of concern. That is awesome

      @@MrFun-fb8re And because of the wrong way he came in he must have been at least two miles short of the full distance too. Also he says he swam a river but do we know?
      If he had missed by only six seconds he'd have been back some time in the 6 years since because he'd know he could do it.

      @@serendpity3478 he did swim through one of the run-offs fro the weather and rain, that's confirmed. As far as coming back, he DID come back in 2018, but stopped after a fun run due to weather. After that he was hurt and didn't run at all for quite some time. He was in for 2022 but decided he wanted to spend time with his family and withdrew. I have a couple of thoughts on why he REALLY hasn't come back, but they're my own, and I've heard thoughts from others, but those are theirs.
