Wow, that bass sounded awesome! The distortion was like the icing on the top.
this is how rippers, thunderbirds and other gibson basses are meant to be played with a pick, attitude and distortion. nothing will be better.
Man, I'm so with you on this! I love those 70es Gibson basses! They are bad ass!
Love you guys playing at the end! Superb demo and jam
And then they blaze into Lady by BBA... haha this is one of the BEST demo videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. Bravo, Marc and Nico!
The Late great Bill Lawrence was attached to Gibson during this era and these are his babies....The pickups and the switching set up has his imprimatur all over it. In guitars, he had a hand in the L5-S, L-6S & the Marauder.
Awesome Marc!! Scored a black 76 Grabber G-3 last year and love it!! Third owner and got a great deal on it! Kiss Alive 1 was my first record so I figured it looked close enough to Gene's Ripper lol! And totally agree with you on Norlin era and Fender too! 76 SG-76 Grabber G-3- 78 LP Standard in Cherry Sunburst ala Ace( I now know it was a Custom lol)- 74 P bass and 75 Black Tele Custom ala Keef among my faves in my squad! Cheers!!
Larks Tongues in Aspic!
Wow, Nico de Tone Factory ! Je m'y attendais pas du tout, c'est excellent ! Superbe vidéo !
Deep thanks for the demo tune! Beck, Bogart, and Appice was awesome!! I just recently score a super clean copy of their Live record from Japan!!! #VinylForever!!!
One of the best bass demos I have seen here. Someone really playing, great jam. I have a mint 73. One of the basses basses I own.
Marc. You're awesome.
They sound awesome on their own w/o the distortion.
You guys in Chicago are real badass, I'm impressed! I'm also amused and actually laughed my way through the entire first (so heavy!) demo. A very amusing presentation, all in all. I'll definitely return for another installment of badass Chicagoan meets wicked guitar and demonic pedal.
I carried one of these on the road with me for a couple of years back in the 70's. Of all the basses I've played, it is truly my favorite (no offense P-bass, but it IS my favorite). Thanks for the review.
Imagine having both of those instruments to play with... 😁
this video, gear and Marc GOLD
That takes me back. My first bass was a maple Ripper. In 1978. Wish I had hung on to it.
I noticed that king crimson bassline right away!
Rick Danko loved his.
TJ Colatrella and we love Danko.
💔
Awesome. I wanted to like this video again lol gotta love Gibson basses and the overdrive \m/
Marc, now This is Rippin & Grippin!
3:34 actual playing starts
I’ve gotten to play a 77 ripper ! They are super cool
O Boy I enjoyed that Mr. Marc
Super cool Beck, Bogert and Appice rendition! Would love to sit in with you guys playing drums! In fact, I was tapping Carmine's part on the table while watching...
Hopefully I will have one of these bad boys in my collection some day
Yo that G.I. Joe tattoo tho 🔥🔥🔥
Disliked for the Birkenstocks but Liked twice for the jam. net positive.
Such underrated basses. great tone and better playing.
This bass is truly amazing, the tones u can get out of it... The look... it's so ugly that it's almost pretty. Love my '74 Ripper!
The Ripper was my first bass back in the late 70s. I loved it but it was heavy.
its my favorite of krist novoselics basses
i like this dude
Dream bassss

So you can’t solo the neck pickup on this bass?
Start the video by paying respect to King Crimson Larks Tonques in Aspic Part 1. Sure, John Wetton was playing a Pbass but it still sounded on point!
So what the S^^^ does the bass sound like without Distortion?
Nice jam
Ooo man, when that custom enters....
“Bass came more into the forefront” then at the end of the video the bass playing gets drowned out by some lead guitar playing. Smdh
Welcome to the world of bass
I mean I’m pretty interested to see how it would sit in an actual mix
I thought the mix was very well-balanced and informative about the Ripper's abilities in a band context. I loved it.
Lol ur ears are just attracted to that guitar the bass didn’t get drowned out at all imo
You've replaced Matt Pike as my spirit animal. That's fine am bass player anyway.
good lord, what a deliciously disgusting bass sound, love it!
Deliciously disgusting, I love that description
Like sardines
Almost got to play one of these. Got stolen before I could
Pickups don’t go out of phase, an inductor enter the circuit and shift the tone
anyone else notice that the pickups have been replaced?
Yeah, they're either the older version of the originals or the Seymour Duncan custom shop replacements.
Possibly not replaced, it’s highly likely the mounting tabs broke off the covers and someone just used the original mounting method because the covers on the newer versions still had the holes to do it.
*_"Lady..., I will trap the stars..."_*
You guys don’t realize the guitar is a little too loud?
Hopper?
That out-of-phase tone option should’ve been a neck pickup soloed and it would’ve been a useful bass. Now they missed the most important tone to me.
Pretty easy to re-wire it that way
That fuzz is aggressive as hell. Fuzz in both meanings of the word
Thunderbird next please
Damn how tall is this guy? He makes a ripper look like a short scale! 😂
How do I get the equivalency of the pickups in that les Paul?
@@strangernajjarDidn't find any p90s by bill.
Bro, I want to come to this store and get a good guitar but I have to go home.
What about Rick danko
BBA...nice!
Don't Fear The Ripper
1975 the body was made out of a l d e r
Had one that I bought in 1975 and used until 1980. I kept flat wounds on it (Gibson Observers). The parallel (#3 position) gave me the biggest sound with decent top end presence and low end extension. Regarding build quality, by the end of the seventies the bridge and bridge pickup could go no lower. Gibson, you suck.
Nice basses but they go for at least 1,200 - 1,500. Too much.
Can’t hear the too distorted bass. Guitar is burying the demo.
Ditch the Les Paul.......this is about BASS........not some hot-licks rocker
Who ever your guys mixer is sucks. That guitar was waaaaayyy too hot
XgUNp44 nah, sounds good on my headphones. And my car stereo. Not intended for phone speakers
Sounds like crap
