Living underground in the Australian Outback

- There's a treasure hunt going on in Coober Pedy, Australia, where opal was discovered a hundred years ago. As much as 80 percent of the world's opal supply comes from Coober Pedy's mines. But with summertime temperatures soaring to 120 degrees, the town features hundreds of "dug out" homes, burrowed into the rock and naturally cooled. Seth Doane explores the underground town, complete with bar, beauty salon, bookstore and hotel.
Opal is my birthstone ,I always loved opal since I was a kid an felt lucky to have such a beautiful birthstone,I wish they had those kind of opals in America,-
That place is so cool I would love to live in 1 of those cave homes & go hunting for those beautiful opals .What a life lucky people .
Wow! The ultimate treasure hunt in their own homes
Living like that would be amazing so peaceful
Would they still live there if there were no opals?
wow...man...made my life....
Nice one, Subscribed. Please keep them coming.....
I can not believe they are not required to cover the holes or atleast fill them back in. I wonder how many animals have fallen in these holes.
zilyn cross and what IF it rains
nice an cool like a root cellar, people in Arizona made nice under ground homes
I would imagine in the United States you would be regulated out of your home while digging for your treasure.
I think so
You're not far off, considering you can be fined for collecting rain water on your own property.
David Hefner $1500 fine for picking the California poppy here lol
David Hefner yeah mineral rights. have to have that documentation
ONLY IF THE IDIOT VOTERS PUT DEMOCRATS INTO POWER
Too bad I live in Florida, can't dig more than a foot or two before hitting limestone

I live under grade and everything is true, never gets too warm, and you get to sleep in peace.A good deep uninterrupted deep sleep does wonders for the human body.
So those are the folks who will repopulate earth after WWIII
I want to live in this place.
That's what people living in Arizona should do.
Do they live in the land down under?

My goal in life is to build a house under ground.
Zoes Dada Yes, so peaceful. I can't build underground where I live, so my goal is one of the next best things: to build an earth bag house, or at least one part of a house.
here in Pakistan you can easily buy a nice and furnished Ruby only in 20$ here gemstones have really low prices!.
Lyn Berger lol tru
Donald no they are not. Of course the fake people like you will think so.
I think it would be wonderful to live underground esp in the hot outback.
Awesome!
Must be getting a lot of radiation from the stone surrounding them as well as the radon gas.
don't know why, but this remembers me the dwarfs of lord of the rings.
Opals look like the arkenstone!
So they really are living down under?
I would figure it's alot cooler underground.
It's a constant temperature of around 70° F all year long
What happened if some one collapse the cave with wrong engineering
Then it collapses
"Only" the opal knows... 👻
They die
So sad that all the gold and precious gems have mostly been mined already and nothing new will be left 1 day.
Great place!!
If the temperature would be soaring to 120 degrees like the description of the video says, people would be dead in under a minute, seeing as its 20 degrees hotter than boiling water...
Lol, not in Farenheit.
Maybe in the next go-around.
Imagien if Nevada did this, they'd save so much electricty.
Any earth quakes to worry about?
Should be law they fill those holes back up , lazy toads !!😆
Show us the bathrooms!
Thats cool.
People are turning away from any stones or gems. "They just rocks". what one said. "We have more important things to worry about like food, water, etc.
What are the bugs like there?
Kaylee Westenberg .....MAD for the Smell Of Gasoline.
That’s where the movie Road Warriors was filmed.
I wonder if they need vitamin D supplements.
You bet!
I heard that the country of Mexico has a very productive Opal mine. Let's invade.
If i remember, its against the law to walk backwards from falling into holes.

who keeps a skull of the deceased pet dog. i wont be surprised if they find bodies buried in those houses
When I sold my house, I wished I had dug up my dogs remains and brought them with me. I feel as though I betrayed him by leaving him behind. So, I'm the kind of person who would keep a skull.
How is keeping ashes any different?

If only there was a large source of ground drinking water
They're saving a fortune in blinds and windex....!
rip if a fire starts
Rest in rock
they,re just living on their surface
Living in titans and they dont even no it
Returned to the meaning of caveman
So lets see, under ground with one or two exits if your lucky, then a fire breaks out and your air supply is gone or the one door in front is blocked. hmmm. yea no thanks.
Always someone finding fault
A fire below ground like that wouldn't have much fuel to burn. The table, cabinets, couch and bed are probably the only things that are flammable. So a deadly fire would be very unlikely. it would be more like a trash can fire easily put out with a fire extinguisher.
If they need a dr? Or medicine? What then?
How much u need come to pakistan 👍
Being you're digging in the wrong place.
Of course colonizers have no problem destroying land for profit once they have conquered it... I pray for the indigenous and aboriginal people mod Australia.
Imagine the weed you can grow there.
That's typically a losers first thought
