Discovery Island 1999

Iain revisits old footage he shot late last century at Disney's Discovery Island shortly before it closed. Discovery Island was Disney's first zoological park, that opened in 1976. This video features excerpts from the island's two shows, Reptile Relations and Feathered Friends. As we walk around the island, we get glimpses of River Country and Wilderness Lodge across the bay. Lemurs, a pigmy deer, a fishing cat, scarlet ibis and flamingos all inhabit the island. Discovery Island was the most unDisney of Disney parks and had a very relaxed 1970s' vibe. Sadly, the island has remained abandoned since the park closed. #disney #waltdisneyworld #discoveryisland #abandoned

Thanks for sharing this great video! I was lucky to have been able to visit Discovery Island around 1995 or 1996 for a 7th grade field trip. I've been having memory loss lately and this video is really helping me.

That’s fantastic. I loved visiting the island and was lucky to go twice. It was such a contrast to the main parks - really laid back and chilled - very much a throwback to Orlando of yesteryear. Thanks for the comment.

I thought it was a warter park that you could swim in. Was it just a bird sanctuary?

Bird sanctuary and small wildlife park. The water park was across the bay.

Thanks. Loved going to that little park. It was actually filmed on Video 8, another analogue format. Luckily, I still have a working VHS/DVD player.
