Birthday Greetings. I was waiting for the fills at 1'14" and 2'36" One of my favourite Robert Palmer tracks. The best practice I always recommend anyone learning the bass is to able to play steady 8 notes without speeding up or slowing down.
Thank you Bruce! Yeah, those fills sound a bit like something you would come up with. With regard to 8th notes... a steady tempo is key, as is getting a consistent tone when playing with alternating plucking fingers.
Hello and congratulations! I hope you derive as much satisfaction from playing as I have/do. Enjoy the journey! If I can ever be of any help, feel free to ask.
HB TJH! 🎉 Palmer's 'You are in my System' was the 1st fave 4 me. Got ahold of a live recording and Palmer delivers! He was a cool lad and a great rock performer.
An oldie but goodie. I really loved his work with Power Station to. I always laugh when I hear these types of bass lines since they remind me of the 70's. That hard driving steady flow. 👍👍👍LOL I can't even imagine you wearing that kind of watch 🤭😂😄
I was really perplexed over the Power Station project... thought it was a really strange pairing. The watch... OMG, you have no idea. We exchanged it for something much more sensible. I still have it... with the original band.
Happy Birthday my friend1 You slipped by me again.. I kn ow you and Lynn wiil do something s celebrate! You deserve it my friend...and many more. and many more. Love you man!!!!!!!!!! k
Dude, I was literally about to type this whole diatribe questionnaire about how you keep in perfect rhythm playing this song until I continued watching. I'm having a lot of trouble with that, as well. It's so easy to get lost when you're playing with fingers on something that probably should be picked. I refuse to play with a pick, just out of stubbornness, really. People have asked me, "Why don't you play with a pick?". I always say, "Because I don't play guitar.". But I'm in this band now, and we have a song with this very demanding marching, almost pirate music sounding bass line with these notes that kind of "stutter" up and down the fret board (best way I can describe it), and I'm having a lot of trouble keeping totally in time with it. Every time we play it, I feel like I play a slightly different tempo, and I'm just not at all consistent with it. Do you have like, mental tricks or exercises that really help you with that? I also feel better that you've struggled with that, too, although it's not at all obvious in this video. It's so hard to just hammer out a perfect, even tempo like that with your fingers.
@@micnorton9487 Actually we have kind of a funk/metal sound. All my other bandmates are into more metal stuff like Pantera, and I'm more into stuff like Rush, so they bring the deep growly seven string guitar sounds and I bring the more high register funk typically.
@@micnorton9487 We have like two songs finished right now, the only recordings we have are shitty cellphone recordings. We've been a band for about 4 months, everybody works, most of us have kids. Basically 5 dudes 35 to 42 years old trying to make music that makes us happy, getting together when we can, which is pretty much just a few hours every other Saturday right now. Soon, though. Soon.
If I could actually post a track in the comments here, I would. We have one crappy recording that kind of encapsulates what we're trying to do that's fairly decent. I kind of "dabble" in engineering, went to the Conservatory of Recording Arts in Az and picked up some stuff there, so I've managed to kind of polish a few turds we've shat. Nothing at all impressive yet. Thus far, the turds are just turds.
Great cover as always! There are so many fantastic Robert Palmer basslines out there. Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, Every Kinda People, Say You Will - too many to name. And Happy Birthday!
I love that bass… I have the left handed version, pearl blue with the white pick guard, and rosewood fretboard… so much lighter and comfy compared to the Stingray. Great cover!
I so hope you had a great Birthday Troy, I’ll be 61 November 5th, you definitely stayed in the pocket on this, those triples you do, crazy lol, i love it,.. ❤️❤️❤️
Happy Candle Day Troy! Birthdays Are The Best! For me it simply means we ALL survived another year to keep loving our Families AND to be loved right back! I never worry about the number of candles I've accumulated, I'm grateful to just enjoy a slice of cake and start the countdown for next years slice! When you have played this Red Bass in the past I always immediately thought of Geddy Lee and his Red Bass that he seemingly only used during the "2112" tune in later years! I'm glad it has found a forever home in my home state on The Left Coast! STILL DYING over "Pimp Watch"🤣 The Flava Flav of wrist bling! My boys loved Palmer and his MTV videos...um...so did their Dad!😉 Cheers Troy and enjoy your cake Bruddah! 👋
Thanks Stu! Lynn had a local woman who is an amazing baker make me a carrot-cake for my birthday. I'm down to the last two slices. She made me give a few thin-cut slices away, otherwise I'd be good for another day or two. Speaking of that Red Fender Geddy played for a bit. It was one of his signature basses and he used it for 2112 because they tuned down a whole-step when they started playing it in its entirety on the "Test For Echo" tour back in... '97? I'm friends with a young fellow, Adam Cyran, who actually has the prototype bass that Fender sent to Geddy Lee for his approval (they did a limited run of these basses a while back). He traded Geddy a rare Burgundy/Eggplant colored Rickenbacker for it and has all the associated documentation. The deal was brokered by Geddy's bass tech, Scully.
Happy Birthday Troy!! Best wishes from your friend in Worcester . I started playing again one day after watching your channel. I thanked you for inspiring me. You were gracious and said it came from me. I'm still playing and still watching your channel. 😊
Thank you! Were you the fellow I was going to meet for coffee when I was making a delivery near there a few years back? Long time, no see! Take care and thanks for stopping by.

Happy belated birthday! Hope it was a good one! And great job with this! Never noticed that little noodle on the upper register before for some reason. Its always interesting when songs kinda force us to break little habits weve picked up on in doi g, sliding up to notes, plucking a bit harder, thats a challenge to do in of itselve. And im with you i struggle with keeping steady 8th notes as well. But i think you did great! Right in the pocket and on time. You nail it whether its simple or progressive.
Happy Birthday!!!! W00t! I hope you have an amazing birthday!!! I'll be sure to have my mom post a birthday comment to you. :) By the way, she's been away from UA-cam for a bit in part because of a COVID-19 infection. I got it first and passed it on to her. :( Fortunately, she made it through the ordeal ok and is doing well. I feel bad about giving it to her but I'm very happy her immune system was able to fight it. :) Happy Birthday!!!!!!
Thanks so much! I'm glad your Mom is doing better. We are still as careful as we can be with my Mother. Just getting a cold could be life threatening for her, I'm sure that even a mild case of Covid would be the end. So far, so good. We can only do the best we can do. Take care!
Those eight notes sound pretty even to me. The song was written by Moon Martin who is massively underrated - but if you listen to his vocal you can see how Palmer picked up on it so easily.
I tried, but there's a few uneven spots. Getting an even attack when alternating plucking fingers is part of the challenge. I saw that this was actually a cover when looking up some info on the song. I'll have to check out the original.
Hi Troy. Hope you had a great birthday!! I would like you to play a great bass cover by the late Alan Spenner, and the song is Same Old Scene by Roxy Music. I'm sure you will agree that it is a good choice. Keep up the good work!!
Hello. It was alright. I checked the song out and it's interesting. I'll check anything out that Alan Spenner played on. I bought it, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thank you! Honestly, the only thing I do is to wipe them down well after I play them. No polish, just a dry cloth. I always wipe the strings down really good after every play. When I change the strings I'll spray some Fantastic on a cloth and clean the gunk off the neck, if there is any. I also try to keep them in their case/bag as much as I can.
