Although this is a cover but totally different to the original. It's hard to compare with them. He has his own style, unique and innovative. No one is similar. It's one of his masterpieces.
Yes, his breathing control is amazing. He can really hold the long note for a long time and switches to different tones in a very short time. He is a magician. One of the best story teller and performer in the world.

What a journey, he is the King
The first time i watched i didnt saw with subs, and i think that was better to feel him and the song!
After i saw the interview he gave before the performance explainning about his identification with those lyrics because of his childhood and traumas(parents divorced when he was only 2 y.o and he stayed with his father wich he rarely had contact during the week, growing this way, he turned himself like a "fake monk", alone, after he started to immerse himself in music all day with his keyboard composing songs to overflow his feelings, his pain, and he started to not want a strong link/conection with people/friends for long time, i understood this way.
I think is basic react to Qi tian(Wukong in some titles)- equal to heaven.
And Child.
I saw so many times, so i prefer in fact any other reactions from his shows/concerts/singer2020 than singer2018, just because i saw many times already! But Fake Monk is a masterpiece!

if you watched his start as an artist from a talent show, he was the darkest horse and became the winner and has been producing music non stop since then. This song reminds me of that. What a journey indeed.

He is a master of storytelling! Hua Hua is his nickname. Hua Chenyu is his name. Martians are his fans! This song is something else! I’m so happy you are reacting to him! It'll be easier for you to just stick to his original name: Hua Chenyu and start using his adorable nickname Hua Hua ;-). This song was released in 1989 by Cui Jian (pronounced Choo-ee Tjian) the composer & original singer in his 2nd album. Hua Hua had performed this song 3 times (if I'm not wrong) all differently arranged.
The title "Fake Monk" when written in Chinese "假行僧" literally translated to English as "false form monk". I suppose it's the Chinese language's structure to give a certain meaning instead of just a man that impersonates a monk. It's like the nuances in the English language, so the "monk" may be a representation of a man's wish for an ideal lifestyle devoid of luxury, extravagance, greed, overt pleasure & desire.
Hua Hua's delivery in Singer 2018 portrays a man with conflicted desires, a man who strive hard for attention or recognition by going from north to south, from day to night to be noticed (by whom) and yet don't want to be noticed. It's like yearning for attention but when given he finds that he doesn't like it, but still yearns for it. Very conflicting. Hua is his Last Name, in Chinese we put the last name first which completely opposite of American way, so we call him Hua ChenYu.
The words he was saying about not wanting to be followed etc. and also he mentioned water and heaven. Then at the end he was saying the opposite, that he wanted everyone to know who he was. That could be the fake monk, the rest of the words sounds like typical teen years lyricals. It’s not perfectly arranged words wise but the writer may have wanted it to be random (like some rock words are sort of nonsensical). There is also a possibility that translation to English changed things words wise. I like this type of stuff, reminds me of some of Pink Floyd’s music.
Not a Monk a person who has a dichotomy he wants to be seen and not be heard at the same time. The original Hua did in Super Boy was all Electric Guitars.
He is incredible and try to do the rest of 2018 and this year, 2020, he wins The Singer and please react to the 2018 songs and 2020 songs. He definitely is a performance Artist, you can see he watched Kate Bush. Lori Anderson, Peter Gabriel, etc.
in his original songs their influence shows up, Hua( wha) is mostly a composer and has a lyricist write the worlds.
And in 2019 he wrote 5 songs, a few were about depression, a taboo subject in China. As Hua says in all his Mars Concerts, Welcome Home. 🌸🌸👽

The monk here refers to a very particular kind of monks who's renouced the wordly life and travels the country on foot (China) his entire life following very strict spiritual displines in pursuit of spiritual ascensions, similiar to Sadhu in hinduism. He'd keep marching on until the last day of his life. The untimate goal is to become completely emotionless and unworldly, in order to ascent to a higher life form. A very foundamental belief for all monks, to not have any emotions especially love greed, and hatred, and all monks are strictly forbiddened to fall in love with anyone, particularly women. The 'fake' monk takes a different approch to freely fall in love and experience all the different emotions, then he finally breaks down, and carry on leaving everything behind including the emotions. I hope these info can help you better understand the performance.
