I was at this lecture! I met my wife at The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, which is why we were there. My 11 yr. old son's middle name is Neve.

Just ordered a copy of The Art of Recording solely based off of his recommendation in this lecture. I start at CRAS this May, it’s a shame we will never get more lectures from this legend.

I ordered it too. Second edition used. Did you get the third edition? If so, what is the url for the additional resources?

I would think that a school that solely focuses on the recording arts could have at least gotten a better recording. lol nonetheless the content is great and what a privilege for these students to hear a lecture from the legend himself.

45:50 onwards. What a masterclass! The whole video is a masterclass of course, but this is for my personal reference, so I am marking this. Love this video! Rupert Neve was God's gift to audio.

Rupert is a champ! Hunched over that table for almost two hours because the school failed to provide a podium for him. I am sure at 75 years old, even though he appears to be in great shape, had to have been physically taxed after this was finished.

A few notes: noise in digital is related to bit depth, not sampling rate. Secondly, the seventh harmonic is a minor seventh just under three octaves above the fundamental. It is actually about 30 cents flat but, while not appearing in the major scale (Ionian mode), it is in the Mixolydian mode. For completeness, the fifth harmonic is a 15 cents flat major third in that same second octave. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_series_(music)#:~:text=A%20harmonic%20series%20(also%20overtone,multiple%20of%20a%20fundamental%20frequency. Also, a triangle wave is all odd harmonics as a square wave but with a different ratio of overtones.

@ No doubt about it: Neve’s knowledge of digital audio was not on par with that of a contemporary expert. In fairness, it was probably superior to that of the majority of audio professionals in the early aughts. For reference, Ableton Live 1 may have not yet been out when this was recorded.

Well, now I know why Rupert Neve is so good: his work is a reflection of his spirit. Even though I am not a believer of any religion, it is obvious he puts his mind and soul in his creations and therefore his inventions instill passion... because they were made with passion.

He is not talking about religion, but showing the design of something bigger, some call it God, others refer to it by a different name. The point is, there is a design and if there is a design there must be a creator. There's a reason why you stated what you stated. think about it. Have a magnificent day.

The "English Way" is appealing because it's an interesting combination of curiosity, intelligence, appreciation for the truth, and dry wit. It's kind of funny to read some of the comments complaining about the audio and video quality - the thing to focus on here would be the WORDS. I do agree with others, though, that the section regarding digital recording isn't exactly, um, correct.

Sadly, what was said and shown (around 47:00) about the "stepped" sinus wave in the digital domain is completely wrong, there never was such a thing as the "stepped" sine, this was a very common misconception even until today about the reconstruction of the analog signal, and that's a thing we can easily see on an analog or digital oscilloscope, just put a sine wave at any sampling frequency and try to zoom on the wave as much as you can, and you will never ever see a "stepped" sign, even with very old digital equipment from the 80's era...
But we can't blame Mr Neve for that, can we? This guy was a real pioneer in the analog domain, and the digital audio was probably overshadowing his business a little 😬 and digital to analog and analog to digital conversion is an extremely complex science that continues to lead to misconceptions (even today) which was something fairly recent in 2001...

I love this. I like the analogy about fast food making you lose your appreciate for a broad palate of fine foods. Granted this was made back when digital was oppressive and harsh. Still as the price/quality gap closes for lower level products you begin to see a lack of good sound solely because people don't seek it out or learn it even though the cheaper equipment has the capability to sound so much better than it used to. It really makes good quality sound a much appreciated art often cheaply imitated.

    • @fernominal

Yes, it's like the sound difference between the guitar amplifier, made with Tubes vs Transistors!
(Tube amp sounds better, which is the reason "Marshall" or "Ampeg" tube guitar amps sound better than todays transistorized guitar amps!

Very interesting talk until about 45 minutes in when he starts talking complete drivel about digital audio, utterly disregarding how the sampling theorem and signal reconstruction works… quite astounding that someone who in pride calls themselves and engineer can in confidence display such a bereft of knowledge regarding a field just adjacent to the one they've built their legacy upon.

    • @Googahgee
      @Googahgee 3 роки тому

I was surprised too, but to be fair it was 20 years ago, and he was an engineer focusing primarily on electrical and analog components. Digital audio is very different, so it’s not crazy for him to not have a full understanding of the sampling theorem, especially when digital audio has come a long way from where it was back then.
