I was at this lecture! I met my wife at The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences, which is why we were there. My 11 yr. old son's middle name is Neve.
Joe G Me too because I was your classmate.
Wow great story ;)
Should name your next child SSL
@@jack.a.driscoll lol
Wonderful story, congrats to you both.
Just ordered a copy of The Art of Recording solely based off of his recommendation in this lecture. I start at CRAS this May, it’s a shame we will never get more lectures from this legend.
I ordered it too. Second edition used. Did you get the third edition? If so, what is the url for the additional resources?
What a genius, what will the music world do without him
I would think that a school that solely focuses on the recording arts could have at least gotten a better recording. lol nonetheless the content is great and what a privilege for these students to hear a lecture from the legend himself.
45:50 onwards. What a masterclass! The whole video is a masterclass of course, but this is for my personal reference, so I am marking this. Love this video! Rupert Neve was God's gift to audio.
Such a modest man, who has achieved so much
Absolute treasure! The last 10 minutes is what I needed to hear! Psalm 19. We are part of this infinite loop! Lets leave our sound track for the next generation.
You can see and hear from his speech that this man has incredible dedication and focus on his craft. He knows exactly what he's talking about and I've learned so much from this video! Thank you, Rupert, for fueling me even further to purse music as my main career path in life.
What a man Mr. Neve was. I now understand why his work is so potent.
You can tell that he's appreciated the gifts he's been given and that he has placed value on the right things during his lifetime.
Amen
So glad you relocated to Texas near Austin. Wish I could afford.more your audio equipment. Pretty much undefeated in the audio world. Thanks for taking time to give this lecture!
This hero takes his student audience from sound waves to the neurological wave forms they generate, then further to the wisdom of an ancient Psalm!
Rupert is a champ! Hunched over that table for almost two hours because the school failed to provide a podium for him. I am sure at 75 years old, even though he appears to be in great shape, had to have been physically taxed after this was finished.
Overhead projectors... Feedback... Neve outshines it all.
Thanks so much CRAS for posting this incredible lecture. I very much appreciate the ability to listen carefully to him without the interruption of senseless ads. So happy to be a subscriber. God bless you and your staff :)
17 years forward in time, and we have MP3! :)
Super awesome, will watch the whole thing later!!
FOH guy crapped himself when Rupert looked at him and said turn it down man. Hahahaha. Awesome video, thanks to those who made it!!!
Wow. Fantastic. Just fantastic..
Thank you for this up load.
Mr Neve makes it easy to understand sound.
Thank you Mr Neve for your Golden Ears and for sharing your love of Audio.
my God bless you because he blessed us with you.
Very much worth the time to listen and focus, not only on the technical aspects, but also the application as its applied to the human experience.
Well... the last 10 minutes blow me away... what a nice and clever man!
i learn something new each time i refer to this lecture
Amazing lecture with a fantastic ending
A few notes: noise in digital is related to bit depth, not sampling rate. Secondly, the seventh harmonic is a minor seventh just under three octaves above the fundamental. It is actually about 30 cents flat but, while not appearing in the major scale (Ionian mode), it is in the Mixolydian mode. For completeness, the fifth harmonic is a 15 cents flat major third in that same second octave. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_series_(music)#:~:text=A%20harmonic%20series%20(also%20overtone,multiple%20of%20a%20fundamental%20frequency. Also, a triangle wave is all odd harmonics as a square wave but with a different ratio of overtones.
What was said about the "stepped" sine was wrong as well 😬
@ No doubt about it: Neve’s knowledge of digital audio was not on par with that of a contemporary expert. In fairness, it was probably superior to that of the majority of audio professionals in the early aughts. For reference, Ableton Live 1 may have not yet been out when this was recorded.
what a treasure this lecture is holy shit this guy is a legend, no matter what he says, he is.
would love to get the chance to have seen one of his lectures.
Well, now I know why Rupert Neve is so good: his work is a reflection of his spirit. Even though I am not a believer of any religion, it is obvious he puts his mind and soul in his creations and therefore his inventions instill passion... because they were made with passion.
He is not talking about religion, but showing the design of something bigger, some call it God, others refer to it by a different name. The point is, there is a design and if there is a design there must be a creator. There's a reason why you stated what you stated. think about it. Have a magnificent day.
God bless the legend an my he Rest In Peace.
At least the sounds good!
Thank you so much for posting. This is fantastic.
its ironic that a video featuring one of the greatest contributors to the field of audio engineering & production in living history has such crappy audio in places....
Sean Grant That is the frustration when dealing with live recordings and short time-frames! Unlike movies, we can't go back and ADR this stuff unfortunately.
And pathetic you can't just be grateful watching this for free
Incredible person, incredible achievements. This initial joke about being a legend sounds so much different and bitter today. Thank you Mr. Neve. RIP.
Mr Neve you are amazing, you are the ideal college professor. Respect!
Thanks ❤️
42.27 "Our PA system is slightly ringing - " HA HA that guy would be sacked at the BBC!
What an amazing man.
Very Nice
Thanks!
The best regards
42:20 Can you imagine working the board and Rupert Neve says "the PA is ringing" after talking about a guy getting fired from BBC for a slight ring?!
I would cry inside.
Walk of shame Lol.
2001 was still on the cusp.
GREAT lecture.
Where he ends up in this lecture is what I went to Sound Healing school in SF for. This is the truth.
The "English Way" is appealing because it's an interesting combination of curiosity, intelligence, appreciation for the truth, and dry wit. It's kind of funny to read some of the comments complaining about the audio and video quality - the thing to focus on here would be the WORDS. I do agree with others, though, that the section regarding digital recording isn't exactly, um, correct.
Amazing man! 🙏🙏🙏
Ha! I was just waiting for him to make a say something about the feedback. I cant believe that they would let that happen during his lecture.
What an amazing story! I'm curious about his childhood now
Im From San Antonio and not too far from Wemberly. I'd love to be an understudy of his, learn, develop new pre amps for audio professionals.
This is really geat! :D
Uniting several ways of thinking - opening up - as he sais - for us, to discover more :D
AMEN!!!
❤️❤️❤️
“It wouldn’t happen on one of my consoles”
😄 well dear sir Mr Rupert, it does on my Neve console, but that’s ok, I love it!
Bravo !
Sadly, what was said and shown (around 47:00) about the "stepped" sinus wave in the digital domain is completely wrong, there never was such a thing as the "stepped" sine, this was a very common misconception even until today about the reconstruction of the analog signal, and that's a thing we can easily see on an analog or digital oscilloscope, just put a sine wave at any sampling frequency and try to zoom on the wave as much as you can, and you will never ever see a "stepped" sign, even with very old digital equipment from the 80's era...
But we can't blame Mr Neve for that, can we? This guy was a real pioneer in the analog domain, and the digital audio was probably overshadowing his business a little 😬 and digital to analog and analog to digital conversion is an extremely complex science that continues to lead to misconceptions (even today) which was something fairly recent in 2001...
Exactly 1hr in he talks about the experiment beyond the upper range of human hearing.
RIP rupert neve
4:47 this one hurts now
@49:55 Geoff Emerick story.
❤
Epic ending
It should be Sir Rupert Neve by now.
I love this. I like the analogy about fast food making you lose your appreciate for a broad palate of fine foods. Granted this was made back when digital was oppressive and harsh. Still as the price/quality gap closes for lower level products you begin to see a lack of good sound solely because people don't seek it out or learn it even though the cheaper equipment has the capability to sound so much better than it used to. It really makes good quality sound a much appreciated art often cheaply imitated.
Yes, it's like the sound difference between the guitar amplifier, made with Tubes vs Transistors!
(Tube amp sounds better, which is the reason "Marshall" or "Ampeg" tube guitar amps sound better than todays transistorized guitar amps!
Watch in x1.25
cool stuff :)
A time where there were no smartphones!
Rippon microphones are 1 0hm impedance
Neve love Jesus, is a Thru Christian, and he tell that God was is guide in each steps for the realization of the 1073...:o)
I love that he give all the Glory to God The Music Industry have to Give a Grammy for he's achievements now that he is alive
I love it
Very interesting talk until about 45 minutes in when he starts talking complete drivel about digital audio, utterly disregarding how the sampling theorem and signal reconstruction works… quite astounding that someone who in pride calls themselves and engineer can in confidence display such a bereft of knowledge regarding a field just adjacent to the one they've built their legacy upon.
I was surprised too, but to be fair it was 20 years ago, and he was an engineer focusing primarily on electrical and analog components. Digital audio is very different, so it’s not crazy for him to not have a full understanding of the sampling theorem, especially when digital audio has come a long way from where it was back then.
Horrendous camera work!
recording as well. The irony.
Great stuff until he gets to the brain. Obviously this was a long time ago, but Neve's understanding of human cognition and emotions is just wrong. Of course he admits that he's not a specialist, and this is tricky stuff, but take care with this.
No shit ~ This is almost unlistenable… The reverb is out of control…of course it's in the elementary school sounding auditorium/ lunchroom… But couldn't all those minds in that room have developed some con selling circuit to
emulate the reverb then simply 180* it "OUT OF THE MIX" !????!
#Focusrite
Its amazing how brilliant men
+jay banon And what "childish" things do you think he believes in?
Daniel Cardin Religion < I forget which he believes but < God and so forth they are almost (well the major religions) all the same key word is "almost"
Sorry you may not like that but it's true Religion is indoctrination and makes us < if not by nature gullible < Turns 21 century men into old bronze age thinkers Kids dont have colds they have demons and so forth and yes people still think that way at least here in the US they do < Its all the same arguments for why a God exist and they all failed miserably and it twiddles down to "I feel like" - "I seen blank" - Or the God gap fallacy - All subjective none meet any merit to in fact say a God exist < And religion can causes harm not just to all humans but to ones self gay kids want to kill themselves < division < knowledge and so forth < Which is childish ratter you believe or not < But hey i still love his work just pick up a Summit audio mpe 200 ... Cant wait to use it
Thanks
+jay banon
But don't misrepresent my statement we may all hold childish beliefs < I am not saying Mr Neve is childish at all
Thanks
BANON
+jay banon Thanks for the reply. I was afraid that's what you meant. I'll pray for you.
