    It's even funnier when translating directly since the subs are adjusted for an english speaking audience, like the "foreign markets" part actually lists "wine, booze, Volvo and Saab isn't even swedish anymore" and the "eurovision" part is sung as "schlagerfestivalen" which was the old name for the eurovision preselection contest in Sweden (a.k.a Melodifestivalen) bc Mello is the most watched program on swedish TV 😂

    This sketch was actually inspired by a Swedish comedy duo from the 60s: Tage Danielsson and Hasse Alfredson - the latter being the father of Tomas Alfredson the director of the Swedish vampire movie “Let the right one in”. Those two made a gospel parody sketch called “Hur ska det gå med min syndiga kropp?” or “What will happen to my sinful body?” for their show “Konstgjorda Pompe.” 😊 The joke was about everything fun being dangerous - food, alcohol, sex, entertainment - and while the lyrics are all different from “Bögarnas fel” the music, the choreography and the way the lyrics are presented are SPOT ON!

    Everyone in Sweden understands that this is satire showcasing exactly how absurd homophobia actually is.
    Something similar could definitely have been made today in Sweden, but of course it would have had to touch on contemporary issues, like trans people rather than gays, the war in Ukraine rather than the War on Terror, and Tesla's attempt to crush Swedish unions rather than lamenting that some companies are no longer Swedish.
    About Eurovision Song Contest? The Swedish qualifyer takes place over 6 weeks! _That_ is what they actually allude to here, not the three events over less than a week that is the international contest. (They sing "Schlagerfestivalen", which can mean either the Swedish part of the contest, the international part, or both.)
    The kind of Christians parodied here are American-style Evangelicals rather than Catholics, by the way. Not that the Catholic Church isn't against same-sex relationships, but at least it doesn't blame gays for the very existence of all evil.

    That the youth nowadays never learn *respect/discipline* ((old slang word that kinda means that, also "shame"))

    We admire British humour very much over here in Scandinavia, so we are often inspired by it.
    We often laugh at the same things as you do in Britain, watch many of your TV comedies, and we use a lot of irony, sarcasm and dark humour as well - although sometimes you really need to explain it to the poor Swedes more carefully 😂 ( Dane here 😉 ).
    And Germans typically don't get irony, sarcasm and dark humour at all 😉 - as a certain Basil Fawlty so correctly pointed out. 😂

    And yeah, SVT is the equivalent of BBC, lit short for Swedish Television.
    English and Swedish humour is, or rather was really compatible. Ofc it has all gone to shit for both countries.
    You mentioned Little Britain, pure genius that show :) Also Mitchell&Webb, Armstrong&Miller (esp check out there ww2 pilot sketches)

    Yes, SVT is also public media like the BBC. Fun fact, their slogan "godkänd av staten" means "approved by the state" as a mick at it being publically funded , as some people always seems to have a problem with public media outlets posting things other than just news.

    Yes a really fun classic😂 Two other very popular humour-clips/videos;
    ”Grotesco Tingeliin (Tingeling russian base-lovers remix) Melodifestivalen 2009 SVT”. Its a parody about Russia, it was the paus number in the Swedish "Melodifestivalen" 2009. You dont need subtitles for this one as most of it is in "pretend-russian".
    Henrik Dorsin - "Tomten är en kommunist" ("Santa is a communist"☺️). There should be one with english subtitles.

    This is not only like British humour, this is a branch of the tree that Monty Python planted. British humour is very much appreciated in Scandinavia. Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Black Adder, the Young Ones and many other classics are household names in Sweden. We learnt from you. And put a little touch of our own on it of course.

    There is a swedish movie made for TV in the late 70;s that I would love to see you react to. It´s called "Vi hade i alla fall tur med vädret" (At least we were lucky with the weather). It´s about a swedish family on vacation with their mobile home. Almost evrything in it has happened in reality but not all of it to the same family. I´ve heard it was broadcasted in the UK back in the days when it was new and british people liked it a lot. I think british and swedish humor is very much alike. We also love Mr Bean, for instance. Hopefully the fiiln is available with english subtitles. I can almost promise that you would laugh yout lips off.

    You should see another one they've done which was an interlude in the melody festival (the competition before Eurovision to vote for who will represent Sweden) about 14 years ago. Everyone who saw it was disappointed that they couldn't vote for that song. Know that there was also a lot of political wrangling with Russia after that, they got ridiculously upset.

    • @H.J97
      @H.J97 Рік тому +2

      I'd say it's 95% correct, there were a few words that were different in the subtitles but they were changed to something that meant the same. only place where the subtitles didn't translate well would be at 2:55 where she sang that her son went hunting with he's gun, in Swedish she said he shot 4 people but in the subtitle it said he killed a dozen. most of the changed words were to make the subtitles flow work with the lyrics

    I don't know if anyone said this before but this but:
    This is supposed to look like a "debate program" on SVT (yes, swedish bbc) and for a long time in the 80ies it was run by this crazy christian guy. But this is supposed to look like the 90ies.
    The word they are using "bög" is not that offensive today. (I mean, every word is offensive if you say it meanly). Gay people did a great job of reclaiming that word. Today "bög" just means male homosexual, but at the time this video is supposed to look like, it was a little bit "suspect" outside the cities.
