As far as S&S-adjacent children's shows go, Thundarr has stood the test of time, but the D&D cartoon clearly hasn't. Compared to its contemporary Thundercats, it's even embarrassing.

The D&D cartoon was an absolute masterclass in how to be a dungeon master. E.g. if one of your players insists on playing an acrobat, you _must_ include a 20' pit (or something else which needs to be leaped over) in _every_ episode.

I was born maybe 6 months after the D&D cartoon premiered. I know I didn't watch it when I was a toddler, perhaps it was just on a different channel than what I was tuned to, but I do remember most of the shows I did see in the 80s (David the Gnome, Maya the Bee, Thundercats, Silverhawks, Noozles, GI Joe, to name a few). I really enjoyed them as a kid, and in many cases the theme songs still hold up, but they really are just junk for little kids for the most part (maybe David the Gnome still holds up, IDK). I can't relate to people who get nostalgic about the shows themselves, the merch is more relatable. People have collected toys, stickers, trading cards, etc. forever.

D&D cartoon could only be so cool with all the constraints placed on America's kids' cartoons of the time.
First season Johnny Quest showed how good kids cartoons could be since it was made before the 'Concerned Mothers' arrived on seen to turn the Suck Dial up to 9 in the mid 70's. Second season Johnny Quest was made after the change in what was allowed, and holy heck there a big difference in how much coolness the show lost.
The difference was like that of the Road Runner vs Wile E. Coyote cartoons made for movie packages (movie + cartoon + news + serial shows like Perils of Pauline) and those made much cheaper for TV.

Hey Pundit, I'm glad to see you're talking about the cartoon. I was 11 and just started the 6th grade when it first aired in Sept. 1983. I HATED it! It made me angry. There were a select few people around whom I could talk about D&D. I grew up in NYC and we all played sports 7/wk, 12/year. Many of us, almost all, were intrigued by D&D but only the guys who liked board/strategy games stuck with it. No girls played. NONE. Sorry folks, facts don't care about your feelings. We who liked the game would NEVER discuss it if a girl was in earshot. Period. Sisters made fun of us. Same with comics. No classmates in junior high knew I read comics. I had just been converted from war comics to superhero comics by Frank Miller with his DD run in 1982. So, the D&D cartoon set us back. We D&D players HATED it. It was juvenile and did NOT convert anyone to want to play. It only gave girls ammo to make fun of the intelligent boys they knew. The common criticism was the same as with the GI Joe cartoon: no one died. It was for kiddies and therefore was useless and hurt the game. It sucked then, and still is a stain on D&D legacy. Gary wasn't perfect.
